- My thoughts on the 2wd to 4wd swap 3rd generation 4runner.
Total cost for me was about 2600$ but you could easily get up to 3500$ depending on your choices.
Please reach out with any questions or anything I missed so I can help out.

Thanks for posting this video! I’ve got a 2WD 2002 4Runner that’s been passed on to my from my dad. So it’s very sentimental to me. After its first winter snow last week in WA, I’m definitely revisiting the idea of making it 4WD!
Good job! Look forward to a possible video of your truck in action.
Can’t wait to do my swap ! Only waiting on few more pieces to complete the swap 🙌
Sweet video! I have a 99 2WD 5 Speed and this was super helpful.
Thanks for this video🎉
Great info almost close in doing my 4x4 swap in my 3rd gen
this is super sick! i’m strongly considering swapping my 00, i also just moved up to washington, would love to meet up and go wheeling once mine is setup!
Friend, could you advise me on what I need to buy to make the swap from 4x2 to 4x4? It's a 2002 4runner 2wd
Thanks for the video - great content and thoughts! I've actually been ready to make this swap for quite a while now after finally acquiring all the parts, including the ECU. Do you happen to know if it's as simple as swapping the ECU console, or do I have to replace all the wiring? The ECU swap itself seems easy...... the wiring on the other hand seems problematic. Haha. Excited to get it going though, great vide
About to swap mine in wa let hit the trail after lol
I’m looking to manual swap my auto and doing the 4wd swap. Should I swap in the manual trans then do the rest?
Considering 4WD 4Runners cost well beyond north of $10k for me in Florida I’d rather do this to mine…
I think you can use the same knuckles if you swap the hubs
This is mostly true. You will have to modify how the ABS is mounted or delete the ABS hole by pressing in a plug. Even if you are swapping the hubs over. (It largely depends on how you want to interface with the ABS system when the truck is finished)
So besides the cost of the ECU and the difficulty to find it, is that the hardest part of doing this swap on a 3.4 auto? I have a 98' 2WD auto and I was looking into this kind of swap. Wondering if it is even possible. I like my truck I really want to keep it so this would be an option for sure since I like wrenching
The ECU is going to be the biggest hurtle. Everything else in the video should be applicable to your swap (front end, gearing and the likes) if I were you, finding a donor truck that had the trans/ECU and such would be the easiest way to approach this, as any parts you need for compatibility will be right there.
@@Nathan_Norby Gotcha, thanks. Just have to find a donor truck if I ever decide to go through with it. On paper it seems pretty easy but of course actually doing it is a different story. Overall doing it doesn't look too bad at all though. Just gotta find a decent donor though since i'd need the whole transmission too. Most guys I have seen that do it have a big lift avalible to them, not sure if I could really do that job in my garage lol
What are those tire sizes?
