Not sure, it's more expensive and it's a non R version, so you have a bit more power than the 890R had, you could get the same with an exhaust and a ecu reflash, but gone are the apex suspension components and the stylema brakes. As far as I could find (KTM seems to try to hide it) it's also a bit heavier. The 890 platform was briljant. It would have been a better choice to improve on that instead of every few years a complete new platform with all the troubles the first year models will have. I was in for buying a new bike this year, and I did, normally would have been a new 890R but I moved over to Triumph now... Not interested in a 990 or any of the other new KTM models, still got a 2018 Duke 390 to play with. Looks better than the new bikes imho.

Not really a step forward, they removed all the good stuff from the R version.
