Seeing as how this video is over a year old at this point, there are a few things I should point out about it.
The first is that I am 100% self-taught in doing this, and have never taken any classes in guitar making, just applying my general woodworking knowledge. That being said, over the past year I have spent a lot of time learning about better ways to make guitars - so if you're here to complain about how I did something in this video, odds are that I have already stopped doing it that way.
The second is about the audio quality at the end, at the time this was recorded, my direct audio recording setup for the guitar was not good at all. The guitar playing in this video was recorded through a USB cable for the game "Rocksmith" which is not designed or intended for audio recording. Since this video was uploaded, I have upgraded my entire recording setup. There is a link in the description to a more recent video where the improvements are plain to see.
Finally, if you're going to complain in the comments anyway, the least you can do is offer suggestions on how to improve. If all you're going to say is "sounds like shit" or "you're an idiot for doing ___", then your comment is useless and not worth reading.
Edit: Yes I am aware that this video in its entirety has been re-uploaded on another channel that Google translate tells me is Indonesian, I haven't decided whether or not to do anything about it yet.
    Thanks for watching!

You learn by doing. Leo Fender didn't expect his first Telecaster ever to be without any flaws (and it certainly wasn't flawless!), so just keep at it 🤘🍻

Just imagine, most of the haters don't know how to hold the hammer in the right way. And everyone who build something complex like that knows that not all steps end up like expected or planned.

He said, "This is just a hobby, I do it for fun" ... All you haters quit nitpicking the build & stop telling him what he needs.
If he built it & enjoys playing what he built with what he had, that's good enough for him...he didn't make it for you.
Awesome work Life L1ke, keep it up & use whatever tools you have.

I built a guitar using very similar methods, a few years ago. I'm ready to try again using the knowledge (i.e. mistakes) that I made last time to help make this new one better. It is a great hobby for those who appreciate the meditation of patience and attention to detail.

The bookmatching job on this is amazing. EXCELLENT craftsmanship. ABSOLUTELY STUNNING.

    • @williamtighe989
      @williamtighe989 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Actually it is not book matched. Book matches is a mirror image. But the grain matching is as good as can be done. If he wanted to book match he would have had to resaw both pieces and then glue them back together for thickness after book matching the side that would be seen. That is a lot of work and if you don't have a really good band saw, it is impossible.

Please buy a good router and good set of router bits. hogging out the majority of the wood with a forsner bit was a great idea but in future projects, leave it a little short of finish depth and use the router. The bottoms will be much flatter and make better contact with the neck for better transfer of string vibration. The body looks AMAZING! Keep building!

    • @tonyduncan9852
      @tonyduncan9852 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Those were my thoughts too. Any non-flatness causes 'springiness' and surface friction, which would transform vibrational energy into heat wherever it occurred. A guitar build must always use stiff hard mechanical junction points to optimise the retention of mechanical vibration energy, and this means close tolerances of flatness and squareness. Also, internal cavities need an electrically-conductive lining to prevent the pickup wiring picking up external EM fields from nearby electrical equipment like amplifiers and fluorescent lighting, and if you're using adhesive metal foil it's a lot easier to lay down on a smooth surface. There are electrically-conductive paints which work too, but you then have to bond either to the rest of the earthing circuit. . .

One of the best looking guitar bodies I have seen in a while. To many people are hung up on the "Classic" guitar look - this is a nice throwback to the 80's with your own uniqueness. With some fine tuning, fret leveling and a thorough setup this guitar could be very playable. Killer looks though - mad props to you on this.

Envy and jealousy is a killer! Great luthier skills for being self-taught, and all done in a garage without a full on professional set up/operation atmosphere like you would see in a luthier shop. Also flaws are what we learn from to better hone one's skill. Keep it up, you are on the right track. The more you build, the better you become, and greater the skill unfolds. I myself always wanted to be a luthier but never got any further than the thought. I admire the craftsmanship of constructing an instrument from scratch, and then being able to then play your own art afterwards.
At the time of seeing this video I seen 311 people who were jealous of your accomplishments, let that empower you to say I must be doing something right!

Just started watching it, that was cool having to shave down the two flat sides because it really expanded the color from the central stripe. Man that was some good fortune with the find on that wood. I think the knot was a good sign... it shows that the wood is "ripe" with distinction and maturely developed flavor and texture, density and connection. But that's all out of me arse. But seriously, I'm enjoying this video, watching the book matching unfold as it gets flatter. That wood grain is awesome to watch fill out.

There’s a guy on TH-cam I like to watch, his name is Ola Englund. He’s a musician and he also has his own line of guitars called Solar guitars. He has a factory in Indonesia that makes mass production and he gets to fly out on occasion to play them, set them up and do a quality control inspection. Don’t give this up, that is if it’s what you love to do. You just need more exposure and the right kind of network!

I have built electric guitars as well. And I am sorry everybody is being so mean. I love the idea of the laminate top with the 'exposed style pickups'. I have only made strat type guitars with a pick guard to cover everything. I thought this idea was amazing. However when you made the back cover for your electronics I would have made one of cardboard like you did your body. Then traced it. I had to look away when there were gaps... Also, I would have used a center punch to get your drill holes perfect before going to the drill press, as well as finishing off peices with counter sunk holes for flush screw heads. Also i would not recommend running your neck screws down with a drill... That could have been tragic... Lol. All in all this is amazing. You my friend have talent, and the only place youre going is up. I hope I did not upset you. I loved the video. Keep up the good work man!!

Wow. What a beautiful hand carved body on that guitar! That is some impeccable work right there my friend! I wish i knew how to build things. Unfortunately, i don't have any tools, was raised by my mother and sister (aka- never had a father figure around when growing up) who knew nothing about tools, so in turn i know nothing about tools or building things. I would def like to learn one day though. It must feel great, to have and play a guitar that you built yourself. All the blood, sweat, and tears of your work pay off in the end when you are able to play a beautiful guitar that is all you..

Boys love your work and imagination, guitar turned out beautiful .I see you have the same problem with your drill press and hand drill as I use to. To fix the problem I listened to a learned elderly gent a long time ago, now I am that learned elderly gent. He told me to put the drill bit as far into the chuck as the drilling flutes and always tighten the chuck with all of the key holes usually three of them, but now a-days I have seen from 5 to none . just a thought to try to help with the accuracy stay busy Tim and THANKS

Beautiful guitar, great woods. People here are saying it sounds bad, dude make a short video playing it with different effects etc on it, I'm sure it sounds just fine. Two things though, I would use washers with the neck plate/screws and also I would fix the neck on before you drill the holes for the bridge so you can mak sure the strings will end up going straight down the neck and not a little to one side. Well done, it's awesome! :)

I’ve always been amused by this video. Been watching it since I was in my apartment in Chandler, Arizona. I took interest in this video about two and a half to three years ago. Your TH-cam name was Lifel1ke, spelled with a “1”. I’ve been wanting to become a guitarist. I’d really like to build a black limba guitar 🎸, since buying one ☝️ could be $4700.00. The interest is with the wood, and the thin brown overlay you put on the front of the guitar. I’d need to probably buy a house 🏡 with a garage to house the machines. I really like the sound of your 🤚 hand sander towards the beginning of this video. You’re sanding a body blank, but that’s a real good idea 💡. I’m pretty sure that I’ve watched this video 50 times in its entirety. Each time I watch it, I like guitars 🎸 more. I wished I knew where to buy a black limba guitar 🎸 for cheap. I’d go $800.00 to $1000.00 at the most, if I have to, but can probably build it for way cheaper. All the machinery could be a setback with the price, but my passion would probably go into building and selling guitars 🎸. Self taught is the best way to go. Would be very interesting if I went to buy a house 🏡, to find that somebody left the exact machinery I need in it. Co-incidence, I mean. This is one ☝️ favorite video, and I’d like to see ya 👋 build many more black limba guitars 🎸. I know I’d have to build the body, and the neck. I’d also need strings and humbuckers, as well as the electronic components, and tuning keys 🔑. Wanted to build a guitar about seven years ago, but the guy was not real experienced with the buckets of parts. The head and neck were something he had, but could be ones unsituated, for each other, and my cost would have been $1000.00, and I’d have a really junky sounding guitar 🎸. That would be by my own experience. I got a few store bought guitars, but I might later trade them in for something more toward black limba.

No idea why there are so many negative comments on this. Even an idiot should be able to tell the difference between a guitar that sounds bad and a less than ideal recording. I love the woods you used on this, the grain on the body is absolutely stunning, it's almost a pity you put a cap on it. Great design and attention to detail. If you have this thing set up well I bet she feels and plays amazing. Looking at your hardware choices I am sure she sounds great through a proper amp too. Thanks for sharing.

I think the reason it sounds muddy... is because of the hollowed out areas within it... giving it a semi hollow body tone. I imagine that when you played it... you were using the neck pick up and not the bridge one. Also... the wood gives it a very distinct tone... which isn't all that bad... but it does not sound as though this guitar would be good for heavy metal. If you play it through an amp with good tube distortion (particularly a metal crunch) using the bridge pick up... then we'd get an idea of what it can sound like. I did notice it had great sustain right at the end. I still think this is an awesome video and I'm subbing ya... and giving it a thumbs up.

You are talented for woodworking and craft building items like a guitars. You have space for improve some skills, especially in precise details. Please get a good router and router bits, especially copying router bits, and create universal templates for some parts (neck joints, pickup cavities, electronic cavities). Maybe you need first to create a closing patch for electronic hole/space, and then mark its shape to body and route grove for patch? With templates and jigs this can be more precise and much quicker. All the best, and have a more fun with next projects!

17:22 lol the wobble on the bit is kind of funny. Kudos for getting it in the right spot. A set of cheap Brad point bits is worth getting, I like the set I got and makes drilling through wood and getting the hole accurate a little easier. As far as how you built it I think you did a good job and it was a decent build, I do not see where anything you did would be bad. It was built with the accuracy of a guitar built in about the 70's there were no CNC options back then.
Again good job it came out nice.

Seeing the wobbling drill bit is scary. I was afraid it would be very off center, or bind, or even worse send chips or splinters around the hole entrance or exit. With that said, I didnt build a guitar and the work that came out of the garage is really great. A great craftsman

    Good stuff here!
I don't get the hate or negativity. For people that don't like it, move on. Why feel the need to criticize someone's hobby? Unless you are building guitars for PRS, I doubt many here could do better. And I imagine a pro builder would appreciate the work here.

I really like the outcome of this guitar, though I d prefered golden screws, as well as golden Pots and Tuning Pegs for the finish, as he allready used a golden Bridge and Inlays.

Wow, lots of whining about this guys work, and I would bet few, if any of you could achieve as good of results. For those who could? Your opinion matters, but there's a way to go about sharing "constructive" criticism, not one of the complainers did it!
My opinion is that you did fairly well on this build. Get yourself some books on guitar design, and your next build will be better yet. Each one will get better until you have people offering a couple G's to purchase. Keep it up man!
