Bravo for repairing instead of just replacing parts. I used to get alternator and starter rebuild kits but now if you ask in an auto parts store you're met with blank stares
" Temporary " because your approach would be if you couldn't purchase a brand new steering box you would scrap the truck ? The West doesn't do tradesmen anymore ; they are all parts fitters .
Can't believe so many negative comments. Do these people not understand there are lot of people in this world that don't have the money and there are not parts stores right down the street z!
Many of them are riding on aftermarket spare parts from moog and whatever.. actually sourced from china. This repaired part is probably safer than those cheap aftermarkets. Lol
@@amazingmechanicalthings As we often say, “Don’t let the bastards get you down!” All considered, very good work (machining/welding) was done to repair this part and get it back into operation !! Thank you for sharing. RL Buffalo, NY USA
Caring over 10t of freight plus truck weight down a winding sh$tty mountain road with a un heat treated steering box drive shaft repair takes big balls , all powers to the truckdrivers who use this truck, we salute you
The problem is here in the US we have liability for our work. No matter how good a welder I am, there is no way I am going to repair a sector shaft in a steering box then take a chance on it failing and killing people (possibly). Even the best liability insurance ain't going to cover a worst-case scenario. No idea of the metallurgy, the heat treat, no check for additional cracks etc. These guys are damned skilled at making repair parts that look like the originals, and that is where it ends. The cast crankshafts for heavy duty truck engines floored me.
Here in Brazil is the same. Every repair is linked to the shop who did it by a fiscal coupon. All machine shops I went to would never repair a steering sector. It would be a paper weight by now. Working without gloves eye protection safety shoes and at least a a protective vest would be punished with a fine.
First I would set the vice sturdy to the table. (1:36) The lath is neatly painted, however. Use pilot drill first and then the drill (9:45). Welding in the lath is not my preference, it brings stains internal in the ball bearings. (19:58) Measuring on a hot part can be done, but brings inaccurate values. Clamping the part (23:41) without using soft grips in the vice on the rather fine thread-end is not the recommended practice. This thread had already severe damages. But it works again. Next job!
you could get anything mechanical repaired at some little shop like this, i wonder if there are ones that do electronics as well. they sure push those trucks hard.
The bearings in that lathe spindle couldn't be happy. Grounding and welding through roller bearings will ruin them. Maybe he had the ground on the tail stock, and I missed it. I can't say I would trust a welded up steering shaft for road use. Maybe a farm tractor would be fine like this.
I applaud their work most of the time but this one is a fail. A dangerous repair not carried out safely or correctly for any task, but definitely looking to kill somebody when it breaks, and it will break. A repair like this on a steering shaft is asking for an accident.
Only holding on the circumference yet the stresses broke it through the entire solid steel piece. Hoping it's a mining veh ie off road and it only a temp solution
Ah damn. That came so close to being a quality repair. Instead, he only welded the outermost centimeter of the cross section, maybe. Guess it's job security when it comes back broken next week.
Im not sure but it looked like they did not measure spiln and gear line up when putting back together. Not sure if it matters on lining up the steering . Not sure if it will hold up ,but maybe some sort of keyway should had been done to help with the torque of steering.
I wish we had this. If the part breaks, you can actually complain to the guy who rebuilt it. Try doing that with the auto zone associate! No bueno! That guy was at taco bell last month and he'll be at burger king next month.
Seeing all theses scary repairs, would make me afraid to ride in their trucks or buses! And passing me in the other lanes head on! Poor people can't afford proper repairs!
Negative comment or not has nothing to do with safety issues. This item is in direct control of where the vehicle goes thru the steering wheel. As a mechanic and fabricator with 45 years of experience, I absolutely would not trust a repaired steering box pitman shaft to any repairs that involved welding. The welding changes the properties of the parent material and cannot physically match the original metal quality. May look good but in use will not hold up or be safe.
Wouldn't it be better to make the piece from another piece of iron in a single piece? That's why the lathe was invented to make complete pieces, not to weld them.
Some parts weren’t meant to repair, that’s one of them. Constant over loading , poor road conditions make for a bad day. I’m 99.9 percent sure that piece is heat treated, if not properly treated disaster looms….
To sisua45, my dear even if it break the driver can stop the truck. The accident does not happen due to such repair job but rather due to our poor road construction and lack of proper law application. You can see even on this road,in front of the shop, people are crossing road as if they own the walkway. There is no sign for the road crossing neither one can see any police. Why? Because we have corrupted politicians especially the shareef and Zardari family and their strong ties with the similarly corrupt army General and police officer. They are stealing everything from this poor country even the money it gets in charity for the needy and poverty stricken people and honest politicians such Imran khan, who even didn’t take his salary when he was the prime minister of Pakistan,is in jail because of these thieves and dishonest judges
In most western country's this would be an illegal repair and would land the operator and the bogger (a bogger is someone who doesn’t quite meet the expected level of quality) in jail .When it fails I wonder how many family's it will wipe out
What is your background in fabrication and welding? I'm genuinely curious because I'm interested in whether your comments stem from a thorough understanding of the involved processes.
Had a stock car had a Vega steering box on it a real little lightweight thing if you got hit in the wheel it would twist the spline for the pitman arm I would go to wrecking yard take nut off bottom not pitman arm off take 3 or four bolts out of the top bring shaft right out put in my box without even taking box off of car went through three or four of them they're getting hard to find now
That has just about everything wrong with it that it's possible to do. It's a critical part of some vehicle, if/when it fails, there could be a lot of innocent people hurt. No conscience in this country quite obviously.

You gonna recast that too 🤡
Now you have another very unsafe truck more on our road. When that weld snap, you have truck with no steering at all. Well done guys?
This is why they still live in mud huts
IF it is a problem repair, and not convinced it is... one more or less makes not much difference over there.

This shows a lot of skill, but it is not a safe repair, it is basically a temporary fix.

Yes its easy to be negative and know it all..the fix should work and be stronger than the original shaft.
