Bike Trailer Training with a Dog

  • It's World Bike Day! In celebration, we're sharing a tutorial with you on how we are training our dog to safely ride in a bike trailer.
    It's so fun to see well-trained dogs doing unique things like this, but there is actually a ton of training that goes into it on the back-end to make sure that the dog a) truly understands the command, b) can perform it around lots of distractions and in any environment, and c) can do so safely. This process should be taken slowly -there's no need to rush and put yourself or your dog in an unsafe situation. Take your time, have fun, and enjoy your bikes!

    Retry much what I’d expected, thank you for affirming the training process.

    Best video! I see so many owners just plopping the dog in there, I want my dog to actually like the trailer-ride instead of being anxious. Thanks for this video! ❤️

    Well done video.
    I was looking at trailers for my service dog.
    I ended up going another way and got myself a sidecar.
    The only problem I have with Calypso, is getting her out of it when the bike ride is done.

    Bought a similar one to this but designed for dogs. I will use it as a stroller since the adoptive dog that I'll pick up just got treated for heartworm and isnt allowed to exercise or walk any decent distance for 6 weeks. Hopefully we can build trust fast enough to start training for her to be comfortable in the stroller.

    Hahahha.... reminds me of the time I took my old Lab X Collie out in our trailer... he was fine until I pulled onto a friends driveway, and I think he was caught unawares and toppled against the side... the shift of weight toppled the trailer which lifted the back wheel off the road and tipped me over the handlebars..... he was zipped inside the trailer, and when I'd picked myself up, righted the trailer and unzipped him, poor old Sweepy ran hell for leather up the road back home !! .... he was OK, but the trailer was relegated to cargo carrying ever after that.... :-)

    Thanks for the video. I'm just about to purchase a chariot for a dog for future trips. She is a super little lady collie who is doing agility training and runs by the side of my bike. But I want to travel further, so she will need to rest along the way.

    Thank you for your helpful and informative vid. I am searching for a bike trailer that doubles as a stroller as well. My dog is about the size of your baby. What size is that bike trailer?

    Hi, it’s an amazing video. Would you please be able to tell me the name of the trailer you are using? Is it a 2 in 1? Thank you

    We have just picked up our new puppy ( our other boy passed about 6 weeks ago) We are getting a trailer and my question is that I never trained my other 2 dogs with treats it was always praise and pets and a toy. Should I switch to treats with this behavior?

    • @CopperRidgeDogTraining
      @CopperRidgeDogTraining  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! Use whatever motivates your pup. Some likes treats, some like toys, some like affection. Just figure out what keeps him engaged and use that!

    Great, but why you just close the cargo?

    • @CopperRidgeDogTraining
      @CopperRidgeDogTraining  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      He wasn't full trained yet, so I didn't want to close the carrier at the end because he probably would have panicked and tried to escape. Every dog is different, though, so it could be just fine for your dog!

    Hi how long did it take from the start to going out the first time

    • @CopperRidgeDogTraining
      @CopperRidgeDogTraining  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It took us a couple of days. But this dog is super confident and pretty fearless to trying new things. Just go at your dog's pace: if she seems at all nervous, slow down and help her feel really confident before moving on. The last thing you want is for your dog to be panicking while you're biking down the road.

    for how long would you say is it ok to keep the dog in there? Is there a limit or can you go for how long you want aslong as you take breaks? I need to bike 20 minutes to get somewhere where my dog can run around

    • @CopperRidgeDogTraining
      @CopperRidgeDogTraining  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's going to depend on your dog, but I would start with a really short period and then slowly build up to more time. We want to make sure that your dog is comfortable and relaxed before you get 15 minutes from home on a bike with a dog that is panicking. So start around the block, then two blocks, and slowly increase time and distance until you are both very confident. You should definitely be able to work up to 20 minutes as long as you practice!

    is that the trailer for dogs or for baby but you use it for your dog?

      This is just a double trailer for kids. We put a solid bottom in it for support and then added a thin cushion to help with the bumpy ride!

      Copper Ridge Dog Training I would love to see the bottom. Did you guys use plywood or something else?
      I am just starting to teach my 3 month old puppy to go in and out of the trailer. I’ve been using “in” “out” and “stay” but maybe I should try this instead he’s chill as long as he has a bone or treats in it but have to tried biking yet just moving it back and fourth! I need to teach him place first though if I switch to this method

    • @CopperRidgeDogTraining
      @CopperRidgeDogTraining  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lisagaedike741 yes it's just a piece of plywood that we cut down to size to lie across the supports, and then a soft mat over the top for him to sit on.
      I would highly recommend the place command regardless simply because it will teach really great impulse control. It's also great when you can simplify your dog's vocabulary with fewer commands to ease any confusion. We have several videos on starting to teach the command, so I'd recommend starting there. Three months is such a great age to start teaching this, but I wouldn't expect too much duration for another month or so as he matures. Good luck!
