Benn got lucky. Awesome bloke to keep fighting when he had big time problems Gerald Meclanan. “Legend” Shouldn’t be cheering He beat you big time. Beat you big time ) ,,
Benn had plenty early ko at 160 but he'd been distance a few times at 168. He beat Barkley, de witt, Robbie simms over there in America so they should have been well aware of the dark destroyers power..

A brawler who was battered so bad by Chris Eubanks, the ref had to step in and stop the fight in the 9th because Benn was taking so much punishment and in such a state that his eye was completely closed. Their second fight was tainted by dubious judging and resulted in a draw. Benn was a brawler, Eubanks was a boxer.
McClellan participated in dog fighting. McClellan's trainer and family admitted that McClellan was involved with fighting pitbulls, and on one occasion had used tape to bind the jaws of a Labrador shut before allowing his pet pit bull "Deuce" to kill it. I call this karma.
That's terrible..he didn't deserve to lose his vision. But that Labrador / pitbull thing was awful to knowingly do, hope one day he can see again. I know I lost much vision in my left eye and it effects you totally ..I can imagine total loss in both. I hope him a miracle. Great boxer

Same here bud. I was 20 at the time, recorded it on to VHS tape, my adrenaline levels didn't return to normal for a week. Then anyime I rewatched the fight I was right back reliving it. I knew when it was over it would rate as one of the greatest fights in any era. 🥊
I concur. I loved Nigel Benn as an athlete and boxer. No other British boxer ever had more heart than Nigel, he always gave his all. Hurt him, and he would just drop a gear and fight back with everything he had- amazing spirit. Nigel and Chris Eubank created a Golden era in British boxing, nothing has come close to it- two superb, athletes and Great role models to young men. Put the graft in- Get the results. This fight was epic, I recall watching it and being on the edge of my seat. I couldn't believe it when McClellan put Nigel through the ropes, I thought it was over. Then Nigel dug deep.........and the rest is history. EPIC courage and determination from Benn. If I could meet one sports person and talk to them at length, it would be Nigel. Top Bloke!
Benn will always be my favourite boxer so I could be a little biased but I'd say he is the best British fighter we've ever had. Certainly the best I've seen.
@@kingsrd1 Joe Calzaghe is the best boxer we have produced. He retired undefeated. Both Benn and Eubank have admitted that they could not have beaten Joe. I would love to sit and a have a beer with the pair of them and talk about their respective careers.
@@liverpoolscottish6430 great boxer that Joe was he just didn't have the fights or rivalries that Benn had. Only lacey stands out for me. Pure boxing ability, maybe its calzaghe, but for great fights, Nigel can't be bettered.
For Eubank recent performance, he says he wants Conor Benn next. If the fight does happen, it has to in the UK to generate the ticket sales but likelihood it will be in Riyadh.
I remember watching that live in the pub... i was going crazy, the whole pub was. I watch this now and it makes me feel sick. A mans life was slipping away by the second and not one person in the whole Building was aware. So sad.. Not Benns fault
I totally agree man. I was 20 and remember being the same, elated that Benn won, but yeah, in hindsight watching it now is hard knowing the outcome. I wish the fight never happened!
Thank You! The bias coming from those American commentators was so ludicrous and laughably obvious, it was pathetic! Wouldn't give the man his flowers which was justifiably deserved that night for his ability as a fighter. But of course, unfortunately it ended in extreme tragedy for the loser, which no one would have wished for after both boxers put such a great fight.
Gerald was the odds on favourite to win in the US and over here in the UK!! But that was the hype! A more sensible look at both indicated that if Benn could stay in the fight for the first few rounds he would have a chance!
As a kid and Benn my hero this fight still haunts me. All the build up and GM's rep had me in bits with worry, but Benn feared nobody, hes was a full blown warrior. Nobody mentioned it on tv but i could tell something wasnt right right with GM fron round 4, when he kept hanging his gumshield out, then the blinking. Watching it now I just want him to quit and save himself....but he was a warrior too.....I still love boxing, but this left a mark on me like no other fight 😢

It was the punches to the back of the head Nigel bum a** Benn was doing. It was his fault. Count how many punches landed to the back of the head. Baffling! The ref sucked
I watched Benn over many years. Right at the end, something of the stuffing was gone. But prior to that, he was absolute box office, brave, fierce, power, raw aggression, and sometimes at his most dangerous when badly hurt. To add to this, he was in amongst IMHO a world class grouping of British fighters at middle and super middle weight, and I put down the tragic outcomes on several occasions to the sheer raw level of the fights. Benn, Eubank, Collins, Watson - a literal golden age where few of the American players dared to enter. With Benn, I felt you could put him in with *anyone*, and I mean that, *anyone* and it was going to be a barn burner.
@@KK-lg8uz At this point in time, the Americans generally did not come to play, and I don't know why. Brutally, had they come - Tony, Nunn, and others, it would have made an already golden era extra-extra special. They tried to screw Benn over in a proposed Nunn fight, and when he did'nt roll over, they sent in Gerald M. I don't think any of this era Brits would have been easy meat for *any* of the Americans at the time, and I think they knew it hence few fights. Benn may actually not have been the best of them, but IMHO he was by some margin the most dangerous fighter out of them to go in on. You think Benn would have had trouble with Tony. I can tell you this, Tony would have had big trouble with Benn. This era came to an end and Calzaghe reined untouched, with few if any US fighters matching up. I don't know if boxing in the UK will ever rise to that level again, and I'm aware novelty fights have become the money fights now, thats not the same.

G-Man took Benn much too lightly, not just Benn but the actual move up the weight. He should've taken a couple of fights at 168 first, decent apponants, ajusting as he went. Benn himself did this very thing back in 1991. Not easy moving up to a stacked weight class.

Plus the American commentators had no problems with the knockdown in the first round. With the time counted I mean. Nobody said anything about Asaro as the choice of referee before the fight either. It wasn’t a clean, technical, boxing master class of a fight. It was a proper fight instead. Both fighters headbutted each other a few times. Not intentionally of course, it was just because it was an inside fight. Both blokes fought on the inside.
It's not like McLellan was a clean fighter himself in previous fights.... and outside of the ring he was a horrible person with his dog fighting stuff. But Benn at the stage of the clash/butt was pretty much spent and was launching his whole body and his balance was terrible just through exhaustion. And it was his balance that sent him through the ropes in the first Round. Bent almost double and getting hit at the same time there was no chance of him being balanced enough to absorb the pinches
That image of Frank Bruno in his red suit banging his fists every time Benn landing one on McClelland head summed up how much we wanted Benn to destroy him, but sadly it cost him his life literally, it a very cruel sport that people love!

McClellan was having trouble keeping his mouth piece in his mouth during the 5th round. Way before any accidental head clash. His problems started before this fight, caused by the punishment given to him by Julian Jackson in their first fight. The fight with Benn just made those problems much worse.
McClellan could and should have knocked Nigel Benns lights out.He did it all wrong, including the split with Emmanuel Steward, getting that clown trainer instead and having Don King to get him fighting Benn when he wasnt ready.Disasterous really but some of these over inflated american egos like him and his team thought very little about the huge risk seeing the British fighter as another walkover.

@@MyHarrietHarper I think McClellan was already injured going into the fight. But there should be a concern if a fighter quits suddenly and unexpectedly. It's a sign that something is wrong and Pacheco should have known that.
Ferdy Pacheco was wrong to keep talking about McClellan just quitting. He should have waited until the situation was clarified properly, instead of keep mentioning that Gerald had quit, due to a trivial injury in his opinion, straight after the fight. Jim Watt, commentating for ITV, mentioned that Gerald may have quit as well, although nowhere near as much as Ferdy.
It was in the moment and no one truly knew how badly Gerald was hurt until it was too late. It's likely that Gerald was already suffering from head injuries but Benn was the one to end it.

McClellan was a complete prick. Shortly before the fight there was an interview with him in a mag (Boxing News?) in which he spoke about being in England to buy fighting dogs and that this was more important than a fight with a loser (Benn). He also spoke about being like a fighting dog himself, that he craved violence and would happily beat another man to death (in or out of the ring). Okay, it probably contained a large lump of bad taste bravado (like Wilder saying he wants a life on his record) but its kind of ironic what happened in his next fight.
I was there that night and we gave McClellan hell when he came in. Despite what it shows on TV you couldn't hear his announcement or anthem, as they were both drowned out. It's sad what happened to the man, but apparently he was a deeply unlikable individual that got his kicks watching dogs tear each other apart.
He set his fighting dog on a Labrador that I believe was a rescue dog, because he said his dog needed to taste blood once in a while. So.....................sorry but fuck him. I have no sympathy for him at all.

I’ll never know how Benn survived that first round!! Benn won the fight with pure heart and that stumble and head clash. As soon as the head clash occurred McClellan became badly injured. He was coming back slightly.
McClellan’s injury was sustained at 1:30 minutes into the fight 7:31 in this video when Benn’s left hook off the ropes deflected off of McClellan’s raised right glove causing Benn’s wrist to strike McClellan behind his right ear making it not deliberate. From that point on in the fight there was a progressive swelling on the back right of McClellan’s head and he began blinking rapidly. It had nothing to do with the head clash. A tragic end to one of the most ferocious fights ever.
@@dafarsher9738 didn’t look a particularly heavy blow. Neither didn’t it appear to bother McClellan. However, after the headbutt, notice McClellan blinking oddly and holding out the mouthpiece.
@@CrueLoaf no, it doesn’t look that hard of a punch does it. McClellan’s sister is quoted to have said that McClellan had told Johnson his trainer he wanted to quit the fight at the end of the sixth round, the head clash didn’t even occur until the ninth round. The swelling in a very unnatural place on the back right side of his head started with that punch, his coordination and rapid eye blinking got progressively worse from that point on. McClellan began pushing his mouthpiece out in the third round. Feel free to believe something else caused the injury, I having watched the fight numerous times frame by frame am convinced the misdirected left hook caused the injury.

I remember watching this live as a young boy, and can remember being shocked and sickened. This is the first time I've rewatched, and I'm shocked and taken aback at so much of what happened. 1. So many back of the head punches, I'm sure well over 50 across the whole fight, the ref only made a couple of cursory warnings to Benn. 2. The complete lack of compassion from Mclellan's corner towards him, they should have done more to protect their fighter. 3. Benn's post fight wild celebrations in the ring while Mclellan was deteriorating. 4. The crowd still celebrating. 5. Don King not giving a sh. 6. The lack of immediate medical attention in the ring. 7. The commentary accusing McClellan of quitting, that was Foreman I think?? No one comes out of this with any credit. I'm a life long boxing fan but rewatching this I now understand why there were so many calls to ban the sport back in the 90s and 00s.
That was Freddie Pacheco, aka “The Doctor” and you can add to your list at how he, an actual physician, could not recognize Gerald had head trauma but instead he just quit. He later doubled down on his stupidity as Gerald is slumped in his corner unconscious and suggests it might be because a broken orbital bone….🙄
Bit unfair on Ferdie, he repeated several times this could be an orbital bone or neurological issue. He repeats maybe 20 times "there could be something very wrong" and the other commentator even says "if he has a serious injury at least he had the sense to kneel down". The bigger issue was that the referee failed to deduct points from Benn, which would have caused Benn to stop or he would have been DQd. The other problem was the lack of necessary medical care at ring side which was a global issue at the time. IN fact it was this fight, the Watson fight and the Spencer Oliver fight which has led to the UK having possibly the best ring side care on the planet.
Hi folks. Lets take a trip down memory lane. On the 25th February 1995, Gerald McClellan met a 31 year old Blackman from the U.K called Nigel Benn. It was to be the most punishing fight of McClellans career. His opponent Nigel Benn was not a boxer. He was a notorious bar room brawler who intially took up boxing as a way of managing his anger. Coupled with his anger issues, Benn had a reputation for being one of the dirtiest fighters. After much hype, the fight got underway and McClellans came out in his usual explosive style. After knocking down Benn in the first round, Benn somehow got back up and proceeded to trade blows with McClellan. Benn was not in the same class as McClellan, but somehow he miraculously stayed toe to toe with McClellan during that fateful night punching McClellan throughout the following rounds. Benns punching delivery was sloppy and his footwork dodging was shabby. But his punches miraculously still connected! In contrast Gerald was fast, super co-ordinated and classy. Both men traded good punches complete with their contrasting styles. Benn employed his trademark dirty tactics by rabbit punching McClellan in the back of the head in every round as the tv footage clearly shows. Sometime during the round 9, McClellan sustained a serious brain injury from Benns punches and he started blinking heavily as he was in pain. His gum shield started hanging out and he started breathing erratic as if he was struggling to get enough oxygen. He movements slowed and he started backing off but he kept his guard up at all times. The round ended but McClellan was visibly hurt. During that round McClellans punches had suddenly become sloppy and apart from the exception of the odd punch, they were just not connecting. A bloodclot had formed in McClellans brain from the gruelling punches he had received. Both men were very tired but Benn, despite his sloppy style, was now getting the upperhand as McClellan was clearly injured. During round 9 Benn can be seen missing a punch but the sheer force of his punch made him fall forward and he headbutted McClellan who tried get out if the way - but McClellan was unsuccessful. Boxing experts have analysed the video footage and have stated that this accidental headbutt made things worse for McClellan added to the fact that his condition was already getting worse due to the brain injury he sustained sometime during round 9. McClellans punches clearly confirmed in the ringside video footage had become sloppy and his movements had become slow. His gum shield was hanging out and he can be seen blinking as if he was in pain. His breathing was erratic as if he was struggling for oxygen. He nevertheless continued. In round 10 Benn came out and after the two men were trying to punch eachother Benn caught Gerald with two punches. The first punch made McClellan go down on one knee but he got back up. The second punch 20 seconds later made McClellan go down on one knee again and the referee stepped in because McClellan made no effort to get back up. McClellan remained down on one knee and the referee began counting down. To everyones shock, McClellan allowed himself to be counted out. The fight was over and McClellan staggered back to his corner and sat down on his stool. IT WAS A FATEFUL NIGHT AS WITHIN 2 MINUTES MCCLELLAN FELL INTO A COMA WHILST STILL IN THE RING FROM A TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY. HE HAD ACTUALLY FALLEN OFF HIS STOOL. So there you have it folks. Gerald was the boxer - Benn was the brawler. But Benn possessed the volcano heart of a lion - and somehow he miraculously managed to pull of one of the biggest upsets in boxing history!
@@jimred5700 Both British and American commentators agreed that Benn was completely outboxed by Mclellan in the first few rounds. There were two different broadcasts of the fight and I've seen both the American and British broadcasts. Both British and American commentators were in full agreement. But later in the fight Mclellan catastrophically tired and Benn took control. Benn stated himself that his entire game plan was to slowly wear Mclellan down. Mclellan had superior technical skill but Benn had superior endurance. Remember that Benn was a seasoned street brawler that was used to gruelling and punishing long bouts. Mclellans superior technical skill meant that he was used to finishing off his opponents early in the ring. With the exception of the Julius Jackson fights, that's exactly what Mclellan always did So brute strength, endurance and a sheer force of Will just happened to tip the scales in Benns favour on that fateful night. Given any other day, the outcome could have been very different. In fact it WAS most of the time - right up until the point that Mclellan met Benn on that fateful night.
@@shaunigothictv1003 Nigel Benn was a magnificent fighter. I`ve never questioned that Gerald was already damaged going into this fight but the fact remains that Gerald was still capable of giving his very best for 2 -3 rounds. Benn weathered the storm and won fair and square. It`s also worth noting that the ONLY fighters who EVER made Gerald retreat were Jackson and Nigel Benn. No one could match Gerald`s punching power, but in terms of "class" Benn is easily in the same bracket.
He was in that ring to long. The blood clotting in his head was doing the damage. He should have had flash light in the eye. That would have proved no eye response. And that's bleeding on the brain. And before anyone says anything I'm a Dr.
His problem started with the Jackson fight and he was not supposed to fight Benn. King brought him in for a reason. Benn was supposed to fight someone else
The fact that he came at under 3 pounds may have been a major factor. He looked much bigger than Benn. Dehydrated-weight weakened. It was a great fight-Benn is a legend with the heart of a lion. To say you feel sick about watching the fight now is virtue signalling. McKellen did not take that many hard blows. He was not knocked out cold. He went to one knee and couldnt get up for the second-was he scared to because of balance issues? The back of the head punches were not powerful, just roughing up. Why was his mouth guard hanging out? It was tragic but perhaps McKellen preparation for the fight was the major cause. The idea of `blame` is idiotic: it was a boxing match not `my little pony`.

If you dislike him for the Labrador incident then that is equally asinine, as that story came from Stan Johnston, who gave stories to the press for a quick buck, Stan Johnston was the same guy who said he found Nigel’s steroid infested blood on McClellans boot 15 years after the fight, why would you ever believe anything that guy says? Boxers are not nice guys, McClellan said himself that “The nice guys don’t make it in this game” its meant for tough people, these tough people have a very hard childhood, do you know McClellans father forced him into boxing at a young age and made him beat up other kids on his block for training? And would move whole cities just for the sake of McClellans training? He was obsessed with making him a champion, in his community dog fighting was a normal thing, it is easy to look in from the outside with purist worldview and say he shouldn’t of done it, but he simply didn’t know better, everyone did it. Its not like McClellan hated dogs either, he probably loved them more than you, he bought his pet dog Duece its own Cadillac and has a picture of it tatted on his arm, he saved its life by forfeiting a dog fight and cried all the way home saying “he will never do it again”. Everyone deserves a second chance, McClellan never got that, especially when he didn’t even do anything that bad. Mike Tyson and even his opponent Nigel Benn were objectively worse human beings than he was, but they are living happily nowadays.
I watched this fight live and McClellan won this fight in the first round plain and simple. His game plan was to use all his effort to knock Benn out in round 1 and that's exactly what he did. The referee saved Benn in the first round by giving him a longer count

It's not like McLellan was a clean fighter himself in previous fights.... and outside of the ring he was a horrible person with his dog fighting stuff.

The most brutal tear up fight I've ever seen.
It wasn't Foreman. He knows better. I think it was Ferdie Pachenko
@@johnjordan6032 poor from him for sure
@@maodijong3661 everything he says is from a slant that McClellan was quitting or had some minor injury... Agree with your other two points
Benn was a two weight world champ buddy. You can't beat a fighter like G-Man just being a 'bar room brawler' 🤦♂️
@@martytdd1606 First of all are you American or British?
"Benn wasn`t in McClellan`s class ??";........He stopped Iran Barkley in one round: what sport are you talking about ?
With the exception of the Julius Jackson fights, that's exactly what Mclellan always did
So brute strength, endurance and a sheer force of Will just happened to tip the scales in Benns favour on that fateful night.
Given any other day, the outcome could have been very different.
In fact it WAS most of the time - right up until the point that Mclellan met Benn on that fateful night.
@@shaunigothictv1003 Nigel Benn was a magnificent fighter. I`ve never questioned that Gerald was
already damaged going into this fight but the fact remains that Gerald was still capable of giving his very
best for 2 -3 rounds. Benn weathered the storm and won fair and square. It`s also worth noting that
the ONLY fighters who EVER made Gerald retreat were Jackson and Nigel Benn. No one could match
Gerald`s punching power, but in terms of "class" Benn is easily in the same bracket.
He was in that ring to long. The blood clotting in his head was doing the damage. He should have had flash light in the eye. That would have proved no eye response. And that's bleeding on the brain. And before anyone says anything I'm a Dr.
You don't type like a doctor... are you a witch doctor?
His problem started with the Jackson fight and he was not supposed to fight Benn. King brought him in for a reason. Benn was supposed to fight someone else

@@N17-o2r u gave your own reply a thumbs up sad man
@@martinsmith6540 no I didn’t. But I just added a 2nd. Would you like to add the 3rd ? 😁

I’ve always been a massive Benn fan but this fight was a travesty. The issues with Mccllean were visible quite early in this fight, way before the accidental head clash. I’ve always believed if Emanuel Steward was in Gerald’s corner he would have stopped the fight and saved all that extra unnecessary damage. Sad to see what happened to Mccellan and Watson and just a reminder that boxing is a dangerous sport. I hate when people call boxers quitters, like Dubois etc, you’d think they’d learn from the past.

@@hupler123 If you think McClellan is a scumbag you have something wrong with you, he participated in dog fights, thats it. Roy Jones, Jack Dempsey and Jack Johnston did the same, no one calls them “scumbags”, the reason people like to target McClellan is because he is disabled and cant defend himself from these accusations.
