This is so amazing, i am glad i cam across you guys. Ill be traveling to NYC in Nov with my husband and he is in a wheelchair. My question to you was how hard was it to find a restroom? i have to assist my husband so how does that work?
Thank you so much. So exciting that you and your husband will get to visit NYC! Great question about bathrooms - if you ask us, that is hands-down the biggest overlooked accessibility challenge in exploring a new city. 😅 New York is definitely not known for its accessible public restrooms. In general we have found that restaurants are most likely to have an accessible bathroom, so always be on the lookout when you stop for a bite. This is especially true of chain restaurants. Starbucks has been our best friend in new cities - you can almost always count on them for an ADA bathroom! In a pinch, we are definitely not above popping into a hotel lobby and asking to use their facilities. Creative problem solving is the name of the game. Wishing you an awesome trip and an abundance of accessible restroom options. 😁

Pro tip: The hardrock cafe in times square is one of the very few bathrooms you can use for free and they're CLEAN.

😂 I got tricked by one of those picture scams 🤦♂️ They weren’t even working they were just a group of guys at a liquor store buying stuff with their heads off I asked if I could take a picture with them they said sure and then started bugging me about money including following me I ended up paying them off because like I said they were following me

I’m definitely going to be hitting the hard rock. I’m going there for the 20th anniversary of 9/11. I believe I’ve hit 20 hard rock surround the world including Honolulu and Iceland
So I did not make it there for the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Unfortunately they were being stupid with their vaccine passport nonsense. But I am actually going there the fifth through the 10th of this month. What I’m most curious about is how in the world am I supposed to track which subway stations are wheelchair friendly. When I travel all over Europe in the last couple years, Google maps with track that for me, but it doesn’t seem to be doing it for New York.
Such a good question! You can find a map of the “accessible” stations on the New York MTA (Metro Transit Authority) website, but unfortunately, that doesn’t always indicate full access for wheelchairs. It’s a bit of a crapshoot, honestly. Our best advice is to keep an eye on the posted alerts while you are navigating the subway - they will provide the most up-to-date info on temporary station closures, etc. (This info should also be available on the MTA website.) All things considered, though, the bus system is definitely the more reliable way to go as ALL the buses have wheelchair access. Hope you have an awesome trip!
