The Film version of this John Christopher story - "No Blade of Grass" starring Nigel Davenport - has haunted me since i saw it as an 11-year-old in 1970. Worth watching.

I too remember this but it does take on a different hue so to speak now. Has it really only been a week since your last offerings...it felt much longer! How dependant we are on you & your level of quality! Thank you so much dearest Archie!

A dystopic classic. All that happens is exactly what happens in the title with catastrophic results. I'm old enough to remember an earlier BBC radio adaptation at the time the novel was 1st published. As I recall it was longer & gave more time for the story to develop than this version..which is OK. I have the paperback.. Thanks for this timely download....which won't cheer up everybody!

A very depressing play. The line that stuck with me most was: 'In the space of 24hrs all morality was gone '
It's horrible to think that this is going on right now it many place in the world where war is present and people are trying to survive by the skin of their teeth.

Stories of apocalypse seem topical in times of uncertainty and make an excellent vehicle for anxiety......we shall survive, well physically, anyway!

The name I use here, "Teda", is a just a nickname & altho I've never thought about it, I suppose it could be gender confusing or even neutral. Like I said tho it makes no difference to me in the least. In fact I feel quite honored to consider us mates! (]8

This is an adaptation of the novel, which was the basis of the film NO BLADE OF GRASS (1970), if anyone cares to look that one up. I can't help but think it must also have strongly influenced---along with Ward Moore's LOT---the Ray Milland-directed film PANIC IN YEAR ZERO (1962). NO BLADE OF GRASS somewhat "choppy" quality apparently was the result of many edits inflicted on the film by its distributor, making it somewhat hard to judge the quality of the original production.

I’m watching it on TH-cam. You’re right about the editing. It’s chopped to pieces. Turns it into a awful film but still interesting to watch. Have you ever watched that old British show ‘Are You Being Served?’ It’s a very young, dark haired Wendy Richard playing that young girl who first appears when they go into the gun shop. And ‘Panic In Year Zero is on Amazon Prime. I didn’t look for it on TH-cam. Interesting films to watch.

Some economists suggest that many children being born now, in 1st, 2nd and 3rd world countries, at some point in their lives will become involved in food, water and/or land wars & conflicts in their adult lives.
Over the next 50+ yrs, as sea levels rise, populations rise and need to move as a consequence of global warming, food/water/land resources will be 'protected' by the affluent nations (initially sharing and helping, but with the level of want impossible to sate, hatches will be batoned). We have already seen how protectionist, eg, the US can be, and this is peactime.
'Strong' leaders will come to the fore to protect what they have or the country has, and others will come to the fore to force 'sharing' what the country has.
Also, robotics and a massive rise in increasingly sophisticated but cheap AI will see many many millions lose their jobs over the next 20+yrs. The economic model we use of 'constant economic growth' will be/is completely unsustainable as resources become even more scarce.
People will need to live/eat but robots and AI will be doing their work. Very few (if any) millionaires, billionaires, Corporations, banks etc who will benefit from the use of the above, will be willing to share/give/redistribute their hugely increased wealth (hardly any labour costs now) to the tens of millions in need.
The capitalist economic model won't work any more, as resources decline, and few have money to buy anything anyway. Unfortunately, with no alternative for the vast numbers of hungry and disposessed, conflict will become inevitable.
I have benefitted from capitalism, I'm retired, good pension, house/cars/motorcycles all paid for, nice holidays etc but know 'constant market/economic growth' is a ludicrous lie when you make yourself aware of what's just around the corner. (I'm old enough that I won't see any of it, thankfully) sweet dreams...

This certainly was a distressing story...a theme that I have read before...catastrophic circumstances leading to a rapid decline into step by rationalized step barbarism.
Such times of crisis as portrayed here and the current pandemic, bring out the best and worst of humanity and highlights our age-old struggle between "rugged individualism" and a more socially cooperative model.
The "heroic alpha-dog" delusional failures of the former shown here should make us all think about how a much more successful outcome could have been achieved by mutual trust and working together.

@Maria Camilla Thiago Perhaps you may enjoy any of the Agatha Christie Murder Mysteries or John Mortimer's Rumpole Series. Both are witty and engaging without being gory and unsettling.
Listening to this type of programming will prompt the TH-cam feed to offer you more of the same.

As a keeper of exotic species, I have rules and regulations to follow, and ALL mine are home grown pets, NOT wild caught species. And I wouldn't dream of eating my pets or any animal. The Wuhan Virus and it's origins really anger me - as do the Chinese treatment of all animals. I have to ask - WHEN will they EVER learn that nature cannot be 'conquered' only respected!?

Disgusting ways in China. I concluded some time ago that it would change in time as the new generations came along - the traditional cultural ways would be pushed out. Can't happen soon enough but I'm praying this will come to pass.

35:25 - its strange how he thinks having children should mean he should be spared, after what he had just done to another persons child. What goes on in the mind of a monster to go from committing an horrific act and then begging like a child? As if he didn't know that he would face this fate if caught?
