  • Did These 3 Players Waste Their Prime Staying?
Summer NBA free agency season is in full swing. It’s the talk of sports offseason, and a time in basketball teams use to bolster their rosters for the upcoming fall, make trades that best suit their intentions, and get their fanbases excited about the product they’re about to put on the floor. For players it’s also a chance to reevaluate the season or seasons you’ve finished and also decide which move is best for you and your career. Yes long term contracts are available, so some won’t have to worry much about this time of year, but after seeing what has been transpiring in the last few seasons in the NBA, contracts can and are being broken way early in the players favor. Kevin Durant wants out of Brooklyn. He’s 33 years old, will be 34 in September, just signed a 4 year extension not even a year ago with the team for 4 years $198 million that kicks in this upcoming season. How do we view this? Some say well if you committed to the team by signing the deal, you should be obligated to fulfill your duties outlined in said deal. On the other side some think if you’re not happy as a player, you should be able to leave as you please. After all, teams can trade you anytime so why shouldn’t you essentially trade them if the guidelines talked about before you signed aren’t being followed, whether on paper or verbal commitments. Is Kevin Durant wrong for not being loyal to the Brooklyn Nets after a deal was made? Or should he look at the following 3 players who may have wasted their prime staying on a team too long as good reason he doesn’t want to waste more years in his current championship contending situation? LOYALTY IN SPORTS: Did These 3 Players Waste Their Prime Being Loyal

Melo didn’t waste his time being loyal. He chose money over going elsewhere to compete for a championship with a team that would invest in players to put around him. NY offered him a check and he took it. The same as what Beal is currently doing now.

The better comparison to Damian Lillard is Kevin Garnett, where it almost seemed like the FO took advantage of how their star could almost get a team to the playoffs by themselves and either not get the supporting cast they needed or let the 2nd best players walk as soon as it was time to pay them.

I wonder what kind of advice would Dirk be able to give to Damian Lillard. Seeing as Dirk stayed Loyal to one franchise and didn’t win till the end of his career.
There was plenty of times where Dirk could’ve bailed but he stayed true….and it finally worked out for him. Dirk is one of the only guys to stay loyal to a team like that and win without some sort of super team. The Mavs also stayed loyal to dirk Which is extremely rare for a franchise to do.
Hopefully it works out for dame in that fashion , but i just don’t see it happening without another SUPERSTAR.
Joel Embiid is going down that same road as Dame but in the end i think Embiid will get a chip lol. He has the intangibles that dame doesn’t have.

It depends on the player's skill as well as overall luck. We could be saying the same thing about Giannis had he not won in 2021, we could be saying the same thing about Dirk had he not won in 2011. Sometimes you play with the hand that you're dealt. You may get lucky and come across a royal flush like Steph Curry or get a lousy hand of cards until you decide to try your luck at another table.
I will never throw shade or any ridicule at anyone showing loyalty to the team they represent because it's too rare of a trait where honor is a dying concept. Though at the same time, if someone feels like they're not getting anywhere, why not try your luck elsewhere? Sometimes our fates are already determined before we make a choice.

They should be held to their contracts. Because these players are being drafted and brought into the NBA to make money and win in their sport. The reality is that the "win" is not guaranteed for any player. Only 1 team will win every year. So if players are just there to chase a championship, then what is the incentive to even play for the other 29 teams? Not every great player is going to win and that should be expected. I see people saying _________ deserves a ring. Why? Over _________ and __________? When does that logic end before it just destroys franchises?

    • @ssor2816

I'm all for guys getting their money, but it's not just as easy to get out once you sign. In these situations especially with the names you talked about..it's hard getting close to value, let alone making the contracts/money match without gutting the team the player is going to. See Melo going from Denver to Knicks..when the Knicks could have waited until that summer and been a FA and come to the Knicks with a decent team beside him to give him a chance. Rarely we see the Harden for Simmons trade. Also AI was traded to Denver while he was still averaging close to 30. Melo was in prime or entering his prime. I also think AI has to be a very special/specific team built around him..similar to Westbrook to play in their style. Appreciate this one

I think Iverson was cut from the MJ cloth of showing loyalty to the franchise & Carmelo was focused on the 💰 & being a top scorer. Much respect SGrowth on a Dope topic.

This is crazy that this was never a question for players until Lebron left. Now we all look at players to leave after year 6 or 7 if they don't win a title. We can't accept that not all players win. Hell, most don't win so I don't think players waste their prime who give their all to a fan base, no matter how bad a team front office is.

  • @evanjordan5075

I still shake my head when it comes to Carmelo. He could've joined the Knicks as a free agent and the Knicks would've have had to give up draft picks and the young players they did to get Melo in that trade. Also, like you said Melo should've signed with the Bulls. I remember that off-season. So shocked he didn't sign with the Bulls. Derrick rose was injured so he still would've gotten to take a slot of shots but he would've been on a team with good defenders like Joking Noah, Taj Gibson and with Coach Tibbs that would've helped hide his weaknesses on the defensive end of the floor.
As far as AI, I think if he played with someone like Kevin Garnett he could've went to another NBA finals. I think it could've worked with those 2. KG could score but his defense and intensity had more of an impact on winning versus his scoring and AI still could've scored a lot.
As far as Dame dollar, he's still in the league. He might want to request a trade and try getting with a team that could win now.

I definitely believe Dame is wasting away in Portland. It hurts because he’s my favorite player among this newer generation of players. My guy I-VO actually accomplished major things for the Sixers. Unfortunately, his team didn’t have enough to challenge the Lakers. JC, what’s up with and stunted growth on my man Robbie Hummel out of Purdue University? If he never tore up his knee.. he was on his way to being a star at the next level. Good jump shot, excellent rebounder and assist man for the SF/PF spot. He also played good defense and had a decent post game. Great all around player who was drafted by the T Wolves in the 2nd round but didn’t make it past one year with the squad. Keep up the great content my brother 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

LILLARD needs to get the heck out of Portland. What a waste of loyalty & talent on a team going no where.
MELO forced a trade to NY for the large contract and location. Then refused an offer from Lebron to join MIA w/WADE. Shows what his priorities were.
IVERSON made it to the finals in PHI and tbh NO ONE was winning during that Shaq-Kobe era other than Duncan & DET. AI going to Den w/Melo was his attempt at a ring.

I'm torn. I watched Kemba Walker waste his prime in Charlotte (even though I enjoyed every moment watching him). In the case of Lebron, I was sort of pissed he left Cleveland like he did but also hated how that owner acted and those fans burning stiff but all of a sudden everything was good when he came back. And then, there's the fact stars were getting together with other regularly. I hated it, but again what do you do if you don't want to get behind trying to contend? IDK, man. This last 10+ years made me wonder what loyalty gets you in the end but also KD's definitely a mercenary lol

I don't think especially Iverson wasted his prime, because Allen could only play one way that's it. That 2001 team that he took to the finals was the only type of team you could win with Iverson. Where he did all the scoring and everyone else did the other stuff like defense, rebounding, setting screens and ball moving.

Speaking on players being "loyal." Its a shitty double standard. When the teams do whats best for the team its always, "At the end of the day its a business." But when a player wants to do whats best for the player, its "The player is disloyal." Fuck that loyalty shit lol. Im happy to see when a player does whats best for themselves and their family, over being loyal to a team. Because the team will do whats best for the team

I don't feel bad for the nets. Many times we are reminded that the league is a business. Teams use players and underpay them when they get any reason like an injury and eventually dump them. Look at Boogie's and Isaiah Thomas's stories. I'm happy players are starting to look out for numero Uno.

I'm a Rockets fan, but I would absolutely love for Dame to win at least one championship in Portland. No player in the league right now is more deserving than he is. I used to think CP3 was that guy, but after really thinking about it, Dame deserves it more than he does because he plays his heart out each and every single game & sticks with an organization that's trash through thick and thin. I wish he was on my Rockets. He's the kind of guy that I want on my team: Loyal AF, clutch & plays his heart out night in and out.

Dame is one of my all time favorite players, but he’s almost 32 and Portland isn’t competing for a title anytime soon. Apparently Portland’s supposed to be a great place to live, but he can play for another team and rent a condo during the season while keeping a house in Portland, right?

I wouldn't say waste of their prime bc we still got a chance to see how great these players really were. For AI i think his basketball story was perfect as far as his prime goes, yes a championship would've definitely capped his career off the right way but man the dude went to the finals and fought his ass off against that laker juggernaut AI really gave it everything he had. I think things could've been different for carmelo bc he had a chance to go play for Chicago when they were championship built just needed that superstar instead carmelo chose to take the money but we all know dam well that new york team ain't stand a chance. Lillard actually has had teams good enough to win it all they just can't get ova the hump

Teams have no loyalty so should players. We have seen organizations do what they want and it be called the business of whatever sport their in. Now players have the power that the have it looks crazy to some. I look at both as business. I always look at the Isaiah Thomas situation with the Celtics as my proof about things just being business.

I respect Dame for wanting to be loyal to the team that drafted him. I get it. Especially being a fellow Cancerian. We're BIG on loyalty.
At the same time, though. That loyalty needs to be matched by the home squad. Are they giving you players that you can build with to contend for a championship with? Or are you stuck in perpetual mediocrity, since the team has you in a Superman, you can do it all to get us over the hump scenario?
My perspective? If you team is putting you in a position to contend every year - stay. If not? Go somewhere that's going to put you may not be "the man," anymore. I'd rather be a second banana or a role player on a championship team, than "the man" on a team that couldn't get out of their own way.
