  • Surfers at the lane.
I am not in this video, my friend and I were just filming that day because we didn't want to die.
I know I am uploading this about 8 months late, but I didn't even remember filming this until i watched some home videos recently so I didn't know I had it.

@ElectronHexagon "Steamer Lane" got named when 3rd reef is breaking about half a mile out to sea the peaks were breaking in the old "Steamer lanes" where the boats used to go to get to the wharf just south of Lighthouse Point (that is the proper landmark for "The Lane"). The source of this was the late great "Sam Reid" who retired to Santa Cruz and passed in the late 1970's. Reid is also credited with being the first (along with Tom Blake) to surf Malibu. So the information is reliable.

Worst beating I ever took as a surfer was at Steamer's Lane on a huge day like this one. Scary stuff to be out there. The ocean really makes you realize how insignificant you are when you're in conditions like these.

@ElectronHexagon It gets it's name from the huge steam ships that once went by the spot in the 50's. It's Steamer Lane. Not Steamer's Lane

This is about how big that Middle peak left was that broke on my head at this spot. It could have been a slight bit bigger than this actually. It might have even been this day! Haha.

I wonder when they named it steamers lane they were referring to the local surfers out there. You know - "steamers" - what you call fresh hot dog shit on the lawn on a cold morning...?

what most people don't realize is that santa cruz is full of heavier waves than every where else. you could surf that same size in so cal and it would be way weaker than going up north. Good vid man

Gotta say these are some pretty big waves for Cali (ignoring the big wave spots). Even in Hawaii a swell of this size would be considered not HUGE but ok sized. But damn! I wish everyday I went out on the south shore (Oahu) was like this. (Was 3x overhead this weekend) But it's gone now :(

Anyone who has taken one of those "Slot Bombs" on the head knows that is very, very big (and cold).

As I've said before, it's all relative.
This IS big for Steamer Lane. It's big for me.
It may not be big for your local spot, or big for you.
    Thanks for watching.

Where I live a steamer is also used to describe a gay person. Steamer lane to me suggests a lane full of gays. Awesome video though!

Middle peak stands up a lot taller than that quite often, it's just a drop and then mushes pretty quick , left can be fun.
