    Others have already called attention to that last cutback on the wave at 4:21 but it's worth mentioning again. Makes whipping that big stick look effortless. Awesome

    Great stuff! I lived in Soledad from August 2010 to June 2011, surfed this place almost every weekend. Vibe was chill, and yes..it was cold.
    Good memories, coming from Huntington. I definitely say locals were cool here, was yelled into some bombs by maverick guys several times.
    Thx again!

    Take a good look at the "drop in". He's looking at the guy behind the whole way. Probably friends, and he's trying to get his friend on the gopro. Gave him lots of room. The guy behind wasn't yelling him off at all. The crew at Steamer's on a day like this mostly know each other. Where are all you guys from?!? I'm guessing none of the critics are from Santa Cruz or have ever surfed the Lane on a day like this?

    • @ajhurst95
      @ajhurst95 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah, I was at first going "What?? What's he doing?!" But as I looked at it again, it seems like he'd have to be one of their friends,. No one would be crazy enough to do that on that type of swell if they weren't both fine with it.

    I guess thats big for SteamerLane its a nice wave but not expecting to travel up to cold water. I am local to Cali Pipeline but it is only its best 6or 8 times a year on big swels fom the right degrees however double overhead and bigger thick swuare barrels crashing hard way out in front of the wave can be a memorable barrel ride or a broken board and in the washing machine rough until you get feet on the sand inside! Yes right in seal beach

      OceanicStimulation its usually a training ground for surfing mavericks. Most people don't get that its actually extremely hard surfing a 9-10ft+ board. Its all about getting comfterable on your equipment before you go into a life threatening scenario.

      a couple of other reasons for the big boards is the take-off zone can jump around 30-40' on large middle peak days, this isn't a just sit on your board and wait for the wave to come to you kind of place, you do a lot of paddling to get in position both in and out and left or right. Plus the wave often comes in pretty fat and not too steep so you need need to get some speed up to catch one. (as can be seen in the video...great surfing on a good day.

    my recollection is that usually there is no middle peak except in big winter storm conditions. middle peak in a left break may not be as dangerous as first peak that tempts people to ride up to the rocks but there is still a reason there are not many people out there. normally all the santa cruz spots are crowded.
    after living there for nine years a long time ago it bothers me that santa cruz has a growing bad reputation for territorial riders that are prone to violence to a degree that is shocking to people there in the seventies. not saying there hasn't always been a degree of home turf pecking order but nothing like what i'm hearing these days. i saw a show on tv about three people surfing the notable breaks going up the coast from san diego to san Francisco. they tried two spots in santa cruz and came out of the water because they didn't want to deal with the intimidation tactics. all three, two guys and a girl, had won contests before so it's not like they were novice weekend warrior types, yet they were totally disrespected in the water.
    and it's more than just that show. I've read it in several places.
    i don't know what riders with the respect for the ways of the waves can do about it other than shame them, but even that these days can be dangerous.

    • @zengrail
      @zengrail 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Steamer's is very heavy-people have died there, even a female lifeguard. The vibe is somewhat local. Don't break the rules and u should be OK.

    • @TheMysticMagicks
      @TheMysticMagicks 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Todd Gellman People only have died there by not being careful around the point. Middles is completely safe, even on a big day.
      I've surfed here for the first time on a triple overhead day, and the heaviness was only that of Huntington on an 8 foot day. It was a big, fat wave, but nothing to be scared of. Unless it's pitching, it's not a heavy wave.
      Try surfing Seal Beach on a huge day. THAT'S heavy.
