- I am generally not a fan of buying used products, and this experience has made me more sure of that. But I did make a mistake that I don’t want any of you to make!
Make sure you really inspect the things you buy used! I have had to do a lot of work on my Carbon Devinci Wilson, and it has been pretty frustrating.

Excellent advice. This is surprisingly hard, especially if it's your first bike. I've bought three used bikes, all in decent condition, but looking back at the situations with the experience I have now, I should not have gotten at least one of them. I was rushed, I knew the sellers had other people lined up to look at the bikes, and they were my first bikes (first hardtail, first FS, first race bike). On the other hand, I don't feel that the sellers were trying to rip me off, I just didn't have enough experience to really gauge the condition of the bikes I was getting and I was rushing to making a decision because I thought I had already made up my mind. The upside, if you want to call it that, is that I've learned a hell of a lot more of bike maintenance and buying new (and used) parts that I would have if I had bought new bikes. I honestly also think it has helped my riding because new shiny bikes would most likely have caused me to ride way too carefully in order not to damage them.
@@henrikw377 I also made a mistake of buying a bike without thinking too much. I got a 2013 specialized rockhopper with a red black color way and it's pretty cool and all but the thing is that I drove 2 hrs to get there and I didnt take much time to look at it. So when i got home I discovered the shifting was a little weird, the forks bleed a little bit, and the brakes dont work. At first I thought that it would be fine and that I would fix it especially since I bought it for only 170 and it even had a wireless computer from specialized. But then I realized that it was too big I'm 5,9 and the bike frame is a xl with 29" tires so I'm just gonna sell it. So next time I'm gonna think more about buying a new used bike.
Yep. No one is doing a favor by taking your money. If you tend to be impulsive, bring a friend who isn’t emotionally invested in The purchase and remember, there will always be more. I recently spent two months checking craigslist daily before the motorcycle i wanted came along. I mean, several of the model i was after came up but none felt right till the one i ended up with. Glad i waited.
This is definitely good advice. I think we have all bought shit used that we shouldn't have. For whatever reason or another. But I also think its kind of good to screwed at least once so you know how it feels and then learn from that. You get better and better each time. Theres nothing worse than driving 4 hours home regretting the purchase u just made lol. Live and learn my friends.
Bought an used trek 8000 series about 4 years ago. Until now I only changed the chain, cassete and the front suspension (the original one was a coil spring and I changed to air). I took about 2 hours talking with the seller and also told him that I would like to see him to ride the bike, so I could see if he shifts ok, could jump over some obstacles... Do that and you will be fine
5 hour trip one way just to spend 5 min looking at the bike not even bothering to check it out. i dont think the right question is "are used bikes worth it?"
I bought a 2nd hand Road bike, I checked it for 10minutes, couldn't see any cracks, so I bought it. When I came back home I knocked it over and the bike broke. When I had it checked if it could be welded again (bike was aluminum alloy) the mechanic said there were alot of internal cracks.
Well he admited his mistake. But the original owner still lied to him and screwed him over hard. What an asshole.

The person selling the bike had plenty of time to "look at it" as well as , well, having owned it should be able to at least give more accurate information. It is certainly good advice to check out a used product before a final purchase.
It would make it harder in in some circumstances, like in the video, where someone would have to travel a long distance and spend money just to look at something only to find out the seller was flat out lying.
So he's admitted his mistake and took the time to shoot a vid to pass on the experience and mistake. As you READ in the title. How about showing displeasure with the lying creep who lied through his teeth knowing Jordan would be driving for 5 hours BEFORE there was any way he could know about the problems? No, let's kick our fellow cyclist while he's down after a rotten experience. Nice.

Bill Jensen Then again, when you're trying to sell your bike you just want it out. Now @PD, some people aren't hardcore techy/parts savy. Or just don't care in the end. For example, I pride myself in my rigs, but there is one funny thing I've got going on at the rear, I'm using a 6mm Phillips head machine screw for my caliper. Why because I needed a weird size, and it was easier to cut that down then get a 6mm hex head. And finally, ha it was probably running just fine. Wheels need a true, nbd, rotor bent (you can true those too). Basically he ducked up. Didn't look it over after seeing the first obvious as hell sign, paints off cranks, she's been ridden!
only rode it 10 times.......oh oops, i forgot to mention those 10 time's were at world cups. LOL
...and I didn't say what the previous half dozen owners did with the bike...

Sold my bike after literally riding it 5 times and twice on trail because of lifestyle changes. The new owner drive 2 hours and sent me a thank you for taking care of the bike

I was anxious and worried when I only spent $600 on a used 2010 Specialized stumpjumper....i can't imagine spending $2500 on a bike that didn't look cleaned up and dang near brand new condition.
Thankfully my used bike turned out to be in great condition. I just hope nothing breaks in a week lol.
i just did the same thing but it was practically a new (in condition) 2010 stump jumper comp... i sold both of my road bikes and bought that for about $400
Just bought at 2007 Specialized Enduro Pro with extra bits n bobs on it for £600... looks in good-nick but I have an agonising weeks wait to find out as it’s shipped from over seas 😳

I got a 2020 stumpjumper st and I think it's great. I've had it for a year and it seems pretty durable (the only problems I had were the breaks needed to be bleeded so badly when I first got it and the lockout on my rear suspension stopped working after about 6 months but to be fair, I haven't got it tuned up yet)

No1 rule of thumb when dealing with the used market: the other person is ALWAYS LYING!
They can be honest, it happens and thats fine. Just always be prepared for them to be blatantly dishonest and dont act surprised.
Most people have a bad experience with the used market that scars them forever and its almost always a politeness thing. Dont be scared to scrutinize, ask questions, and say NO
And don't even assume dishonesty, normal ignorance or forgetfulness is just as problematic

I'm out there to get a good deal. If I have to shark a poor soul who let's me get that $2k bike for $700, so be it. I'm never seeing them again. 9 times out of 10 they'll be after your money

Buying used stuff is an art of its own.
But speaking for my home country germany, I always advice everybody to look for used bikes.
There are so many dudes with to much money, who buy super fancy bikes.
Than realize that riding a bike is actually sort of hard and just don't use them.
So many friends of mine bought bikes that were used maybe three times,
but still lost all of their value.
Even bying crashed bikes can be advicable. One of my friend got a Cannondale Lefty for 1000€ cause the owner had crashed on his second ride.
Besides the scratches there was nothing wrong with that bike.
Also ich hab noch nie Probleme mit gebrauchten bikes oder teilen gehabt. Wer solche Defekte nicht ansatzweise erkennt trägt auch eine teilschuld.
Hab mir heute noch witzigerweise den LRS gekauft über Kleinanzeigen, habe den Verkäufer mit Fragen gelöchert und Videos verlangt vom Lauf bezüglich Höhen Seitenschläge...

I think the best way to learn how to buy a used bike is to buy a bad one. I've bought a lot of used bikes over the years. Even the Bronson I ride right now was used. I definitely have learned to really look at every thing closely. Anything that seems a little odd, look at closer. Oh, and never buy one at night! It so much harder to see issues when the lighting isn't good.

Never buy a second hand without any inspection done by yourself.
Yes 50% and no 50% - but avoid investing big time and travel, being too excited can be a disadvantage for anyone buying 2nd hand stuff. Your already invested in the purchase by travelling and it is hard to turn away - added to that pressures like time, another buyer on standby, rare items, kids, distractions, ferries, planes etc can sway focus away from the actual purchase and the condition of the bike. Totally understandable - rule of thumb trust no-one in sales, double check things yourself and don't be afraid to walk away or make an offer that works for you. That being said just enjoy the bike - you have done some nice upgrades and repairs to your satisfaction - you probably learnt a lot of things about frames, shocks and suspension that buying new would not have shown you. What you lost in $$ you gained in wisdom - just apply same principles to cars, houses etc and you will be way in front.
PS. I actually had similar experience buying sight unseen via ebay 10 years ago on a giant atx2 DH bike my first DH bike $1600 AUD - the alu frame had actually been snapped between down tube and bottom bracket but the repair had been done by a pro - the repair welds were super regular and it had been gussetted with plates either side so was as strong if not better than original. the bike overall had copped lots of abuse - but it held on quite well - strong enough to handle my riding at the time. I was a little bummed as I committed to buy and the item did not meet all my expectations when I went to pick it up. I went through with the purchase anyway as I needed a DH bike and heavy duty DH bikes were very $$$ or not common. I used the bike for many rides and the big bits never let me down and handled all the jumps and drops I could throw at it riding with friends - the minor disappointment on purchase was quickly forgotten on all the fun, thrills and laughs I had using it.

Damn dude, sorry you had to deal with so many messed up things on that Wilson! The seller should be ashamed for representing that as running well! Using the wrong length bolts, binding the coil on the shock, dented rims and a leaking brake lever is unforgivable to not mention. You should out this guy on Pinkbike if that is where you found it.
I've bought a few used bikes off Pinkbike in the past few years including a high end DH bike (Norco Aurum Carbon C7.1, Fox Factory, Shimano Saint and full RF SixC build). My keys:
1) Only buy locally used in person (or within say 2 hour drive, like Whistler from Vancouver), this way a trip to see the bike will not make you feel pressure to buy it.
2) Do not buy on the first visit, at least take an hour or two to think about it and come back to look again. This avoids rush purchases.
3) Research how to inspect the key components, especially on a DH bike, like fork bushings/damper condition/stanchion condition, headset/hub/BB/frame/shock mountain hardware, shock damper condition, rim condition, brakes, frame for damage and play in pivots etc.
4) Be prepared to walk away always. Don't talk yourself into getting something if it doesn't feel right.

Buying used, assuming the value is right of course, is one of the best decisions one with a passion for cycling can make. Used purchases and rebuilding/restoring used bikes and components I have purchased was what made me discover my passion for bicycle mechanics. Viewing this video it seems to me that you probably learned a lot about bikes through all of this, and at the end of the line have ended up with a pretty special bike to call your own. If that isn't worth it, I don't know what is.

Always have the seller meet you at the local bike shop, then while there have a bike mechanic look over it and let you know which is wrong with it.

I always slip my local mechanic a $20 to have a solid look at it or bribe him with a bottle of Jack Daniels. Though I do like helping local bike shops as it can be slim for them in the winter months.

In the beginning you say: „I don’t have as much money to spend.“ Then you buy a used bike in poor condition for 2500$ and replace nearly every part of it 🙈
With any used bike purchase in this price point, you need to meet the seller at a bike shop and pay the shop to inspect the bike and see what recommendations they have in regards to issues and things that need to be replaced. Then you can negotiate a good and fair price with the seller. If they are unwilling to do that with you, then move on.

New bike - Big money up front, No personality until upgraded or customized. Will work amazingly well! You get to determine its service history.
Used bike - What a deal!!! Now get ready to spend some serious time and money on it, or try not to that's always hilarious. You end up loving to hate it most times.
Custom Build - You can buy piece by piece. Never need to upgrade, if you take your time researching what you want. Find a frame you like and only buy parts that really make you tingle downstairs. The tease of waiting really makes you just love the hell out of the bike once its up. You'll keep it forever!
As someone who's bought many used items, the *_absolute most important thing_* is to take plenty of time; don't be in a rush. A lot of the things you mentioned would've been apparent with a thorough once-over. Believe me, it took me exactly once to make an expensive mistake & never get burned again. At least you got it kicking butt now!

For me i think its very worth it, i always make sure the owner knows that i plan to inspect all the pivots and hardware within the bike and need atleast 30 minutes to inspect the bike, i also try to keep it close because i feel if its further away im more obligated to purchase it, i picked up a custom gt sanction for 1500 with gx 1x11, dvo topaz, trp quadiem, some plus tires (not 100% on plus yet lol), overall i think if your very careful you can some good deals but i do understand why buying new is good, i think for newer or less experienced buyers new is the way to go but if you know what to look at you can score some sweet deals!

You have plus tyres on a sanction? How do they fit? It was never meant to take that size wheel
NEVER buy used CF without having it inspected by a professional with the proper equipment (NO, you don't have it). A frame or even rims can be completely compromised to the point that it is entirely unfit to be ridden, even on flat level asphalt, without ANY visible signs of that damage.
I'm a pro mechanic and I frequently buy used, but I have the ability to tear anything down and inspect it in great detail anywhere. The real issue isn't if you should buy used, of course you should! The real issue is if you have the resources to get any vehicle properly inspected, no matter what it is. If you can't get it inspected, it's likely not a good idea to buy it unless you take the time to seriously research the item and pay close attention while inspecting it. Also? You could move the brake caliper mount and not add the wheel spacer. Just a thought.
Being able to fix stuff yourself and have the tools to do so at your disposal is also a big plus. Any person into bikes will need to spend at least $150-$200 on tools, after that it's mostly just replacement parts.

The Best Is People Who Think Their Bike Is Worth MORE Than It Really Is ..... An Unserviced Bike Is a 500$ Bill Easy .
This past weekend I was getting prepared to drive an almost 2000km round trip to pick up a supposedly near-new bike, because the savings far outweighed the cost of fuel and accommodation. Then, almost as if it was a sign, Trek reduced their prices on the Friday - only one day before I was going to leave. So with that price drop I couldn't justify the travel and risk with the second-hand bike and decided to buy new locally instead, with all the LBS support benefits. After watching this video i'm glad that I did!

This is similar to the story of my enduro bike. Bought used online and it was one thing after another. I think I’ve got it dialed in now, but only after spending a lot more money! You’ve inspired me to make my own vid telling the story 🤘🏻
Some advice. Work on your own equipment as often as you can. Watch as many videos as you can, and get assistance whenever you can. The more you fix and work on your own bikes, the more you'll learn, and the greater your attention to detail will become.

That’s an amazing experience actually. I am fixing up two “cheap” used 24” mountain bikes for kids. But they are not cheap! Frame chips and a small dimple to fix. Many parts broken. I ended up am spending almost as much to fix them as a new ones. But I am learning all the parts and what to buy and replace. And the finished bikes will have top components! I miss BC grew up there and used to ride some of the best singletrack on my old Raleigh, bought used and I had to replace everything on it. Ended up being a great bike. You definitely turned lemons into lemonade and the finished result looks like a fantastic bike! I think it's easy to be so excited about buying something, not to mention the guy told you it was hardly used so you weren't looking for defects. Live and learn and that is probably the best lesson here, to look before you leap, check everything. Same goes for cars and potential partners. Love those yellow Mavvic rims and the bike is really cool, looks like a great performer especially now that you've dialed everything in. Plus I'm sure a lot of knowledge was gained rebuilding it. Just bought my first full suspension bike, can't wait for it to show up and I have lots of plans for it. You have built a really badass bike and the custom touches work well. Who knows maybe you could have a side business rebuilding high-end bikes and selling them for big bucks?

yeah, buying new things all the time will definitely help the planet.. especially those metal bike parts that don't get nearly as recycled as your 1k iPhone or whatever. Fix over buy and appreciate.

I had a rear brake rub I could never get rid of until I saw your spacer trick in this video... Fixed in 2 minutes now! It sure looks like the original hub but I guess it isn't 😅 Thanks man.

This helped heaps, ended up getting a used polygon Siskiu d6 that has been heavily modified and is awesome. The dude who I bought it off of put a 150mm fork on the front to go with the 120 out back
I feel your pain bro. Ive had the same scenario happen to me. I was looking all over for a used bike and couldn't find one. I finally lined up a bike to go see, and was so desperate to get a bike so i settled for it. Worst mistake i ever made, i bout the bike for X amount of dollars and ended up spending 2x what i paid for it, just getting the thing ridable. I finally managed to sell it, so this time i was patient and spent an hour inspecting the bike and landed a smoking deal
I think that if you are new into mountain biking, then buying used might not be so bad, but as you get more experienced and learn more about bikes, I would say buying new makes more sense generally speaking. What are your thoughts?
Jordan Boostmaster have someone with a lot of experience working on bikes come with you because there are a lot of issues that people who don't work on bikes regularly won't notice
I'd say it's the other way around. A new bike is going to be serviced by the shop that sold it to you, as long as they're good people, it's better.
A used bike with potential problems is only going to be a good deal for someone who knows a lot about them and has had experience with the problems.
Then again depends on who rides the bike and the syle of mtb like we rarely here road bike horror stories
Personally, I would only buy used from a LBS, if they sell with a warranty (even a short one). That way I could expect that at least it won't require investment for a while.

I’ve been riding a long time. I can’t ride as well as you btw...you tear up the northwest. Im more of a XC wildlife ecologist now that I don’t want to miss work from wrecking. I take allot of pictures and write in my journal between the hills and jumps. I’m from Washington, and I love riding here.
Ive been riding for almost thirty years. I know my lengths, dimensions and angles that fit my riding style. I am six feet tall, but I have a really short torso and long appendages. I can ride a medium or an XL if the angles are right.

Thanks for these kind of videos, it's helpful to see how many parts of a bike can be broken. Still i was surprised that the price of fixing it was a 1000. I thought it would've been way more.
Anyhow I'm a newb in this, I've did some mountain biking in the past but more road cycling. And I was looking around for 2nd hand mountain bike with a hard tail. Seeing that the bike i was looking for was from 2009 made me think.. maybe i should look at brand new bikes. I bought a new bike for a 100,- more. So let's see what's going to happen, anyway..i'm excited :)

Great video. Thank you for sharing your experience. That bike was welI used, and obviously had parts replaced. I bought many used bike parts over the years. Some almost new, and some in pretty rough shape. I enjoy being a mechanic though, so I always thought of it as a challenge and a learning experience. The really good stuff always made the hunt worth it though.
The rule I followed was if it's more than $50, can I get it new for that price or cheaper? I never bought a whole used bike though, just frames and parts.
Chains, tires, tubes, brake cables, pads, rotors and chain rings, I always bought new though. No point in putting your trust in those things if they are used.
The saddle and pedals are not a good thing to judge the age of a bike with though. When you find a saddle you like, and a set of pedals you like, use them on all of your "new" bikes.
You really need to spend time talking to the seller though. I met some one time that were obviously not in the know about bikes. I bought a vintage frame and fork, with a few other good bits from the scrap pile for $20 (parts I still have, more than 15 years later); they told me that the Canadian Tire Supercyle they had, was worth $1500... This is the good stuff man... I'd need like $900 for it though...

By its very nature a DH bike will be abused and pushed to its limits so therefore I would never ever purchase a used DH bike.

DH bike i would probably never buy anyways but for sure not used.It is very RARE you get a great deal on a bike, they are sooo over priced these days that even old bikes cost too much.
OugaBoogaShockwave Depends could find one with little use and new biker that took it easy..so you might be able to find a used gem...finding a good used bike takes some time but can well be worth it.
Only thing to buy used is an old road bike off craigslist to fix up for general use.
I buy used dh bike about a week ago week ago XD it has 2 owners when i buy it.first owner race it/service it every 2h second owner buy it and drive few times a track then he think its not my thing to drive dh and sell it to me (owned 1month) first look a bike was good not scratch at all in bike and forks/rear shock arent leaking and forks seals seems to my eye new! Chain and sprockets looks very good condition, same thing the brakes. Rear tire is new/front one ok. He give me with the bike: new front shock springs yellow/red , 5 new maxxis tire tubes, different angle triple tree, new front mudguard, new ish front wheel (whole thing) with new maxxis tire. I payed 800usd the bike with about 230usd value parts with it i think its a good deal !! Not stolen bike! Sure about that (Commencal supreme dh 2010 (red white) one day i will buy new one best to best dh bike!! Greetings from Finland!!

That's why I think it is good for anyone wanting to service their own bike to buy an old bike with the obvious need of a full rebuild. Once you took everything apart and back together again you will always know what your bike needs. Also comes as a real challenge if you look for one. My first rebuild bike came with the super rare pull shocks scott had on the geniuses. Had no idea those things even existed and it has been a real hassle to fix
I bought a 2011 pivot firebird in august of 2020. I really enjoy this bike it's a 170mm 26" "enduro" bike. It rides like a trail bike, I have done everything from xc races to days at the park with it. Shortly after purchasing it, I discovered that new cranks were needed. After my first season of owning and riding it hard, I found a crack in the rear triangle. Bike Zone was able to find me a new rear triangle which was sweet. The only thing I'm thinking of replacing are the old formula breaks. My bike was heavily upgraded when purchased. All and all with maintenance I'm about $2500 into the bike.
