My friends and I went camping a few months ago, happened to be one of the windiest days I've seen (bar hurricanes). I pitched this idea after we had trouble getting a fire going, and it ended up being one of the most controllable fires I have ever built. Fire holes are absolutely the superior way to build fires, because they work in almost all conditions.

I did this when I was a child. Minus the fire. I build entire networks of connected tunnels with mounds and little "castles" to protect the entrances. Made an entire kingdom out of it. This random survival short just gave me major nostalgia 😂
I love fire… me and my friend found a lighter and a roll of toilet paper just chilling in his back yard for some reason, he was just confused about it as I was and we were stupid so we made flaming toilet paper streamers whoever’s burned up first lost, so we literally ran in circles to keep the fire from creeping up the streamer

There's this pier I like to go to at night and when theres no ship out on a moonless night, its like staring into space. The ocean and the sky just melt together, its awesome
I miss it wish I still lived near the ocean. Walking to the beach at 11pm and sitting up on a lifeguard tower listening to the rolling of the waves was a different kind of vibe
So funny! Reminds me of when my best friend and I decided to run away from home! Lol! We were both 13, we went to an area us kids called the "sand pits" here in FL, this was a huge area that had elevated areas with vegetation and palm trees and the rest was sand similar to beach sand but pretty far from the coastline, and it was dotted with ponds, small and large, loaded with cattails, that contained tons of Florida Garfish, snapping turtles, some panfish, frogs and plenty of alligators! Never saw another area of land like this since I was a kid and I'm 65 now! Anyway, we dug a huge oval hole about 2 ft deep, then piled up a ridge all around it, then we dug a hole in the center, built our fire and had plenty of space for each of us to lie down and sleep opposite each other, next to the fire! No one ever saw us! From a distance, they never saw the fire! Only spent 2 days there as we realized home wasn't so bad after all! Lol! But 2 days gar fishing, eating pan fish and frog legs and foraging was fun! Miss my bestie, RIP Ronnie.

Works great with formable damp clay soil. After the first fire its basically a fired adobe brick and will last a good while, which is handy around say a semi permanent camp for instance. Plus you can form a bit of a chimney to even set pots on, and it further hides the flames.
Better yet building the right barrier half of each hole, with your fire hole outter barrier facing the wind, and the breather hole barrier cupping the wind to allow the flow down and into your setup❤
Remember to check with the fire services where you live, these are illegal in some areas because of root fires that can cause seemingly random wildfires popping up. Less of an issue on the beach but something to be aware of

We did this on the plains for 2 reasons. One so the wind doesn't set the plains on fire. Two so your enemies don't see your fire. In sand it will collapse as the fire dries the sand.
Why is it named ‘Dakota?’ My uncle who lived in the Australian Outback showed me how to do this when droving sheep or cattle. It was semi-arid where his properties were, the two separated by about 30 miles/50k, hence the droving. There were two benefits he told me about this sort of fire - 1. It didn’t go out anywhere as easily as a ground level fire. 2. There was much less chance of a bushfire, one of the biggest threats in drought season as it was when I was a kid. The area had reddish sandy soil. It had very little moisture in it but was so compacted that it didn’t collapse when you made the air vent/tunnel bit. I’d completely forgotten that lesson, it’s been 20 years since he died and nearly 50 since I used to work on the properties over school holidays.
Its called the dakota fire hole since we learned the skill from the native north american indigenous dakota tribe, pre contact we didnt have alot of inventions or livestock that were in the americas since alot of them were from the indigenous pre contact, we finally made contact with them in the 1400s and incorporated alot of there skills into eveyday life and alot of people forget where things originate from sadly.
To the people that do this, please pour water on top of the fire after you’re done. Not just bury it with sand and call it a night. Happens in Hawaii a lot. Tourists bury their bonfire or charcoals with sand and it stays hot for a long time and injure people walking over it.
The locals in my area will considerately leave a smoking fire with dozens of empty cans and a couple of smashed bottles lying around as a safety measure to graciously warn tourists from hazardously wandering around.

Then call over your server and tell them you got a left-handed fork and need a right-handed one. Demonstrate to them that you can't eat with a left-handed fork because it's upside down and won't hold food. You switch it back and forth between your hands so that it's right side up in your left hand, but upside down in your right hand. You can really drag it out if you want to. I wonder if those brave men in WW2 during the Battle of Bastogne knew about this method. They weren’t allowed to have fires so the enemy couldn’t point them out so easily but having this down in the bottom of their foxholes probably would’ve felt like heaven to those men. @@nighthunter3039 Smoke is also excellent at giving you away. Even at night, provided it's not literally pitch black, cigarette smoke is quite visible. When I was a conscript some of the educators used this to locate our guards who thought they only had to hide the burning tip of the cigarette. It sucked when that happened because the educators, as punishment, would sound the alarm and the entire platoon had to wake up and run to positions in our underwear.

We used the same technique whilst on long patrols in the Rhodesian bush. If you dig deep enough, and away from vegetation, the glow is minimal, and reflection on trees etc is avoided. Also, if stealth is the issue, dig in very dry soil and only burn dry wood.
To catch more wind you can set a sail just behind the intake hole, a curve of bark is perfect to angle and change as the wind changes, then you can use it as a cap when it starts to rain
You can actually make a couple feed air holes rotated around the main pit if you want to, and a slanted hole works better than the U shape, but is more likely to collapse. I would recommend gathering a few long, wide, (about hand/palm size roughly)flat rocks that you can steeple along the air tunnel to help prevent collapse as it dries the sand
@@skylined5534 yeah, last thing you wanna have to do is plunge a hand near the effectively jet intake of super heated sand haha. If you happen to have tin cans with you (possibly from that night’s meal?) you can use them to help keep the air tunnels intact, and can even shape them to make the flow more efficient with a bit of work.
Add your kindling to the hole and start the fire on top. The smoke will be cooked off better than starting the fire below your burning material and you can slow feed it more sticks or material through the opening in the other hole
Great for covert hidden fire and concentrated cooking, a small grate comes in handy. Easy to put out/hide fire and less smoke. Major problem is not very radiant for warming up.
You could increase the distance between the two holes, the holes don't have to be so big. Put your grate over one to prevent wood from falling down. Proceed with building a 'normal' campfire on top and you'll have a fire that does emit alot of heat

I learned this while being homeless and meeting a Vietnam vet in the San Bernardino forest it’s absolutely amazing what you can do with it

We used the same technique whilst on long patrols in the Rhodesian bush. If you dig deep enough, and away from vegetation, the glow is minimal, and reflection on trees etc is avoided. Also, if stealth is the issue, dig in very dry soil and only burn dry wood.

To catch more wind you can set a sail just behind the intake hole, a curve of bark is perfect to angle and change as the wind changes, then you can use it as a cap when it starts to rain

You can actually make a couple feed air holes rotated around the main pit if you want to, and a slanted hole works better than the U shape, but is more likely to collapse. I would recommend gathering a few long, wide, (about hand/palm size roughly)flat rocks that you can steeple along the air tunnel to help prevent collapse as it dries the sand

If you happen to have tin cans with you (possibly from that night’s meal?) you can use them to help keep the air tunnels intact, and can even shape them to make the flow more efficient with a bit of work.

Add your kindling to the hole and start the fire on top. The smoke will be cooked off better than starting the fire below your burning material and you can slow feed it more sticks or material through the opening in the other hole
I had to look this up to gain some knowledge. It appears to have a number of advantages which I hadn't realized.
Great for covert hidden fire and concentrated cooking, a small grate comes in handy. Easy to put out/hide fire and less smoke. Major problem is not very radiant for warming up.
You could increase the distance between the two holes, the holes don't have to be so big. Put your grate over one to prevent wood from falling down. Proceed with building a 'normal' campfire on top and you'll have a fire that does emit alot of heat
