This is what I really like about The Fast Lane Car, there's no fucking about with editing, etc. etc.. They drive the car, do the necessary, and get the video onto TH-cam as quickly as possible. Top marks.
Great review, but as a mk6 driver I noticed you didn't mention the real reasons to buy the performance pack on the mk7: bigger brakes like the mk6 golf R, and most importantly a real, mechanical, electronically controlled front differential. The XDS system on the standard car is good, but in the mk6 you can feel the tires fighting each other for grip, and the steering tends to get skittish over rough pavement when you're hard on the gas from a dig or at low speed. From what I've seen on other reviews, the mechanical diff really helps the at-the-limit handling and improves corner grip and front end feel. Now that you've driven the car without it, I'd like to see what you think of it with the performance pack. Subscribed to your page, hopefully you'll put that out there.
Fascinating, the passat was priced 7k lower than previous generation and vw bragged about that when it had the plant moved to Tennessee. Now, this gti is being assembled in Mexico and price didn't go down at all. Even with more standard features price is high. Anyone remember that?
It went down like 1000 dollars. In this day and age, that's pretty good all in itself. But now it has loads more standard equipment and better safety and weight to boot.
I got the 2014 mark6 Wolfsburg edition a few months ago. And we love it. Everyone else it's in love with our car. This new one is nice but not sure it looks better then the six.
I'd love to buy this thing, but VW's reliability seems to be at a low this point in time. What's more, this is a completely new model(chassis, engine) and it's being manufactured in a different place as well. Too many variables that leave the future reliability all too uncertain. But god, I still love it.
Do the tail lights have bulbs instead of LED's? What does it have? I also noticed the screen is smaller than the European version. Also, does the GTI have a rear back-up camera? Thanks TFLC!
Not sure why people continue to insist that the FWD GTI competes with the rough around the edges, but much more raw and faster AWD WRX. They two cars handle/perform completely differently and appeal to different types of people.
Brandon B that's true, but the consumer usually looks at the price first, and then the features. Me personally I couldn't care less for awd, but I do care about gas mileage, which is why I would choose the GTI over the WRX. Then again I'm a VW owner and enthusiast so you could say I'm biased on the subject.
Yeah, all the mqb platform will be assembled in mexico starting with the golf and gti. I really have no complains about the car being assembled there since I own a gli mk6.
The Mazda 3 will be way more reliable and cheaper to fix and maintain over the years. If the GTI was reliable, it would be the perfect car, but the reliability history of the recent GTIs is very poor according to Consumer Reports and J.D. Power and Associates. You'll hear some GTI owners say that their GTI doesn't have that many problems, but they are the exception to the rule which is that Japanese cars such as Honda and Toyota (and I think Mazda too) will be much more reliable and cheaper to own than German cars such as VW or Audi.
Definitely the GTI. Don't listen to this guy ^. VW's had some minor electrical issues 10 years ago mostly with the beetle and jetta. Nowadays, especially with the Golf/GTI, they are rock solid. The GTI has a better interior, much more power, and better ride quality than the Mazda 3. For the same price? Not even a question.
shephrd Thanks for your comment. Yes, I have heard about the reliability issues with the GTI. However, it seems mostly due to user error (not following scheduled maintenance, and so on).
AstroFantastica The EPA ratings have it lower for highway, is it actually more efficient? I've been monitoring Fuelly.com to check GTI MK7 fuel efficiency, doesn't look too too great, but good enough.
Drumming Spain most caps are just round.... the Golf has quite a few quirky turns of design. that's what keeps it being an evolutionary icon. the TFL reviews might not be to your taste but they are very informed and very well researched.
Annuvyn Arawn " the Golf has quite a few blah blah blah..... that's what keeps it being blah blah blah...."!!!!!! I know how its designed and built - I OWN one!! Take the comment for what it was - tongue in cheek because, and really sorry for prodding you in a sensitive area, but if any reviewer states that the petrol filler cap is 'best of all', he's either reviewing the worst car in the world (which, of course, the GTI Mk 7 is not), or he needs to rethink which part of the car he describes as 'best of all'. Get it now?
guys don´t worry, the new mk7 is 10 times better than the mk5/mk6. the old tsi engine's had timing chains wich weren't build the right way by the manufacturer of those chains. the new models have the good old timing belts wich don't cause any problems anymore. and the dsgs are fixed too. volkswagen is getting there reliability back, so stop hating on a car that's good
I might be alone on this but I think the "retro" plaid seats are tacky. I'm all for retro but tacky is all I can think of for this. The NBA does retro right when they bring back the old jerseys. I'm getting the SE for sure.
Loved my 2011 GTI, will probably love this new one. Hate the golfball shifter, I think--to be gross about it--it looks a bit phallic. Debating buying a used autobahn mk6 or a new mk7 base when I graduate med school. Also not a huge fan of the asymmetric wheel design of the mk7 :\ ... aand the red stripe. That would be the first thing to go on a white or blue model.
Given that we are picking on our presenters today, if Roman is going to test little cars with other males in the car, you need to revise the camera angles. At times it looks like he is rubbing Andrea's leg when he puts his hand on the shifter.
All normal ppl like me want to know is the reliability, maintenance and maintenance costs... I could give a shit bout all the horse power critics, weight and gear ratio bs....
***** around the time I wrote this I was searching for a family car. I was looking into VW golf but most of the videos I saw were the decked out GT Golf's. I didnt have a high budget at the time to afford a car like this. Although while watching this and numerous videos I realized that the VE GOLF wasnt for me. And how are going to tell me speed doesnt matter. Right now I push a car top speed 160 and in the future I hope I could get an even faster car.
I wonder why VW have decided not to put the LED tail lights on the US versions of the GTI/GTD. They are standard in Europe and look the business! From this vid it looks like the US market are gonna get the shitty standard tail lights which come on the base spec models in Europe. I'd feel short changed if buying in the US. Our cars are much better spec'd, however the US cars are WAY cheaper to buy
Why is it soo cheap at starting from $24,000 whereas in UK it starts at £27,000 :/ Its like a bargain over there :D basically half the price, its like the price of a 1.4 Polo or 1.6 Fiesta, I think people who can get one of these should :D
the big things i don't like about the car are the flat bottom steering wheel. I understand why they did it, but i just don't like it. 2nd thing is the plaid seats that vw's are known for with the gti ....i want a just straight cloth without that pattern option as well. Maybe they will have that. But those 2 things just ruin that car for me. Don't forget it is not a cheap car to buy so when you lay down that much coin i see those as hurdles.
Focus ST has 250hp. But it's also heavier and not faster at all than Golf VIII GTI. Golf also has better chassis and clever electronic differential that eliminates understeer and most of the torquesteer (both present in Focus ST). And Ford doesn't cost less! Focus ST starts at $24.910 which is around $900 more than Golf GTI!
What i dont like about this car is the rear cam, the auto parking shit and the push to start button. I mean, come on!! Are people really that lazy to turn a key or turn your head and look at back? Im going to get 2010 or 11 gti its much better and durable than this new shits called new gen.

10 yrs later and the mk7 has really held up.. I still absolutely love mine
This is what I really like about The Fast Lane Car, there's no fucking about with editing, etc. etc.. They drive the car, do the necessary, and get the video onto TH-cam as quickly as possible. Top marks.
I also like how genuine they are. You can always tell when they are genuinely having a blast in a certain car. No show and fluff.
Matt Krais Yeah, they don't appear to be working hand in glove with the car makers, they're giving an honest appraisal.
TFL and breakfast. The perfect combination!
Mark Luhan Even better than bacon and eggs ? :-)))
MrKeyboardCommando With bacon and eggs. :)
Everything about this car makes me smile. Great first drive review, TFL!
The performance pack also adds a limited-slip diff. Kinda important to note.
Yeah, it helps if you're stock but once you go Stage 2 it's not much of a difference.
I've finally convinced my father to buy me one as my first car. Sweet!
Great review, but as a mk6 driver I noticed you didn't mention the real reasons to buy the performance pack on the mk7: bigger brakes like the mk6 golf R, and most importantly a real, mechanical, electronically controlled front differential.

Also LOVE the door opening section. You guys are officially awesome.
Roman - this IS the performance pack. Its a 4dr s model with lighting package (hid's) and performance pack. Only PP has vented rear discs. Cmon man
Nah man - YOU are wrong, they come on manual or dsg, doesn't matter. This is a press car they drove and as autobytel CORRECTLY stated - it IS the PP.
Fascinating, the passat was priced 7k lower than previous generation and vw bragged about that when it had the plant moved to Tennessee. Now, this gti is being assembled in Mexico and price didn't go down at all. Even with more standard features price is high. Anyone remember that?

I'm really looking forward to getting one
Nice brief review Roman!
SO geeked to test drive tomorrow.
Isnt this the Performance pack version? Judging by the GTI markings on the front calipers?
LOVE IT! still would get a TDI but this is still an amazing car
Here in uk, even the standard golf comes with more standard equipment such as electric handbrake and front radar system
While that may be true, in the US one can get the an upper tier, 210hp mk7 GTI for the price of a base 120hp golf (@ 16,975 pounds) in the UK
Who would want an electronic handbrake?
Can't wait to see the full review!
I'd love to buy this thing, but VW's reliability seems to be at a low this point in time. Looks like bulbs and thats a same!!!
You mean, "and that's a shame?"
joker2100 I typed it exactly the way I wanted, fully aware the internet spelling police would show up. I wasn't disappointed.
telj1 I think he said that because your original comment didn't really make sense with "same".
SlipknotMaggot0526 no I got it just like I thought he would've gotten it. Just was missing a letter do to that auto predictive spell check.
Roman, if you have to choose from the all new GTI and all new WRX, which one would u go for? and why?
More legs rooms and cargo spaces compared to last version ? If so, how much ?
Can you adjust the lateral of you seat ? My back is a little wide and i'm not really comfortable. You have some tips for that issue ?
My 2008 Jetta Wolfsburg w/ 2.0 and DSG trans is the sleeper of all contemporary cars
Would love to see Ford Fiesta ST review from you guys.
Woo, a really nice car in my favorite place!
European one looks better with the LED taillights and the screen is also larger (don't know if yours was the most expensive one)
TFL guys keep up the great work. But the music needs some work. Any truth to the rumor that the US isn't getting a 2-door GTI?
This is awesome in 7 years i will have one of these bad boys
3 years to go!!
Do you have it noe
Awesome car, and you guys are great presenters. Subbed.
GTI, Golf TDI, TT, TTS? Same platform! Awesome cars.
Hopefully it will be more reliable? That would be nice!
VW really should have made that red line going through the headlight as standard on all gti. Its only with the lighting package...
Not sure why people continue to insist that the FWD GTI competes with the rough around the edges, but much more raw and faster AWD WRX. They two cars handle/perform completely differently and appeal to different types of people.
Because of the price? WRX starts at 26k and the GTI aorund 24-25k.
***** Perhaps, but really to compare two cars, I think they both need to have a similar drivetrain.
***** and that's why I don't like VW. priced at a premium and assembled in mexico.
i love those wheels
What is about GTE (sporty hybrid)
Thats cool the shifter knob looks like a golf ball (: 2:24
anyone know the release date for this in the US?
Early june according to VW.
Now
180 mph on the speedo? Aftermarket?
this little thing is a beast!
Torn between this and the 2014 mazda 3 i GT. What do you guys think?
The Mazda 3 will be way more reliable and cheaper to fix and maintain over the years. If the GTI was reliable, it would be the perfect car, but the reliability history of the recent GTIs is very poor according to Consumer Reports and J.D. Power and Associates. The GTI has a better interior, much more power, and better ride quality than the Mazda 3. For the same price? Not even a question.
Depends on what you want! GTI is definitely more powerful and sporty as it competes with Speed3. If you want more luxury, then Mazda3 i GT.
shephrd Thanks for your comment. Yes, I have heard about the reliability issues with the GTI. However, it seems mostly due to user error (not following scheduled maintenance, and so on).
Ironslice Thanks for the input!
its cool besides the body. if its a gti I think the body should have a sporty look like the mazda 3
seat leon cupra - same price, same quality, 70hp more, not sold in US
What's the mpg on this model?
Zach Payne Isn't the DSG usually rated 1 up for highway and city?
SlipknotMaggot0526 Correct, DSG is about 5-10% more efficient than manual.
AstroFantastica The EPA ratings have it lower for highway, is it actually more efficient? I've been monitoring Fuelly.com to check GTI MK7 fuel efficiency, doesn't look too too great, but good enough.
Zach Payne Really they should state at what RPM they are shifting at for the manual because you can change at 2500 RPM or 5000
Zach Payne LoL
3:36 "best of all..... check out this cap" WHAT? lol
Drumming Spain most caps are just round.... the Golf has quite a few quirky turns of design. that's what keeps it being an evolutionary icon. the TFL reviews might not be to your taste but they are very informed and very well researched.

Да, Андрей как обычно отжигает )) Я правда не понял как Роман понял хД
Ja, kanskje.
Roman comes from former Czechoslovakia, he can speak Czech, Russian and German (if i remember correctly).
guys don´t worry, the new mk7 is 10 times better than the mk5/mk6. the old tsi engine's had timing chains wich weren't build the right way by the manufacturer of those chains. the new models have the good old timing belts wich don't cause any problems anymore. and the dsgs are fixed too. volkswagen is getting there reliability back, so stop hating on a car that's good
6:30 WTF? Since when did San Francisco have a reputation for rain? That's Seattle's specialty.
Wow, this is in San Francisco, the city I live.
I might be alone on this but I think the "retro" plaid seats are tacky. I'm all for retro but tacky is all I can think of for this. The NBA does retro right when they bring back the old jerseys. I'm getting the SE for sure.
those xenon headlights I'm jealous
2012 golf R or 2015 gti? Heelp! D:
I was genuinely disappointed when he pointed at the TDI first. The he said "NAHH!, GTI of course." what a relief!
"Hopefully we will enjoy this without Das Police!"
2:57 Berkeley Grizzly peak!
Loved my 2011 GTI, will probably love this new one. Hate the golfball shifter, I think--to be gross about it--it looks a bit phallic. that golf boll gear selector
Does anyone know if VW is planning on integrating Pandora into the tech system?
+bradh716 REALLY late but all the 2016's have android or carplay if you want.
Where the hell is the R?
Oh lord these wrx people lol
THIS GUY!!! Got me with the joke.
Are u guys Russian? Great review
why no 3 doors? the 5 doors look like crap
i was exited until i saw the starting price here is 34.900 euro.
All normal ppl like me want to know is the reliability, maintenance and maintenance costs... I could give a shit bout all the horse power critics, weight and gear ratio bs....

I us used like this car when I was poor :D
I hate the shift knob

They do... I work for volkswagen the new gti sedan autobahn has them, the cc, the passat 30th edition, tsi,tdi sel, jetta gli. the list goes on.
No LED taillights!!!!!!! :(

But do you have to get it with the *&^%$#@&%$$^&* 5 door body. That's the only thing I have against the Focus too.
The Golf GTI has traditional handbrake in America and Europe and UK get electric parking brakes... WTF VW. Not fair at all!!
focusst wrx are just asrefined and morefun
i l;ike the mk7 gti, maybe future trade in for my ms3?
In Brazil it costs 50000 dólar
the big things i don't like about the car are the flat bottom steering wheel. I understand why they did it, but i just don't like it.

Diesel? NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
GASSSSSSSS!!!!! YYYYYYYYEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Молодцы!
I guess I'm not as easily wowed.
Don't like the styling. Looks more like an EconoBox.
Are you Russian? The guy next to you said dvadstat chetiri :)
only 210hp the focus st 270 hp focus better choice and cost less

sic22l ok so 250 hp but 270 torque !!!and with ford Racing ecu u can get 300hp and 360 torque for 700$ ...I will buy the focus st , more potential
tzion115 It's just 20 lb-ft more at higher revs in a heavier car. We're talking about stock cars.
This is probably the best NA 2.0L 4 cylinder in the world, 210hp & a whopping 258 lb- ft of torque is a serious 4 cyl engine!
Its not naturally aspirated, its turbocharged.
How do you know it has a turbo I didn't hear him say it in the review? Still a good car even if it does.
juan tafoya all gti's have turbos
It's a TSI engine. Turbo Stratified Injection. Plus, all the VW group 2.0l have turbos. Such as in the A4 A5 A6 but they call It TFSI
About this engine there’s the top-of-the-line TTS, which features an upgraded 2.0-liter TFSI engine producing 310 hp and 280 lb-ft.
over 192k views
It starts at $24k??? what a rip off.
I wanna work with you guys! Hire me!!!!
Wow, a GTI with a handbrake, how old fashioned lol
220 Bhp**
It sounds like the guy in the passenger seat is speaking Russian.
The GTI is awd. u said fwd
Might wanna double check that fact, GTI's are FWD
bsblplayer69 I double checked. All wheel drive is optional
Lost me at 210hp...
wrx for days.
so lets start w/.... NAWWWWWW LOL
Love this car but the interior seats are so damn ugly...
What i dont like about this car is the rear cam, the auto parking shit and the push to start button.
I mean, come on!! Are people really that lazy to turn a key or turn your head and look at back?
Im going to get 2010 or 11 gti its much better and durable than this new shits called new gen.
The car in the video doesn't have push to start, you can see the key hole on the interior shots. We are also not going to get the auto park brake here in the US, no button, we get the standard lever just as before.
Abominable Samsquench
Audi S1 is stylisher and better
Everything about this car screams Boring!
Worst review ever. Misinformed.
