    I always wondered whether some guy must have bought a 606 and a 303 for backing for shadows covers down the pub. I can just imagine the poor guy, stood there playing Apache to a confused audience. Ending with a load of confused people staring at him and saying: "Guess you guys aren't ready for this, but your kids are going to love it".

    I bought the cheapest colour RD-6 too, just cost £68 after using my Andertons loyalty money off. The build quality is as good as the original.and it sounds as good. In the early nineties you could buy a used 606 for around £30 to £60 so the Behringer is a good deal 👍

      Bought mine for £80 on an Amazon Black Friday deal. Great little drum machine. I've yet to use the individual outs with my modular. I guess that will make up for some of the limitations. I have used the trigger outs on the toms to trigger the sequences on the TD-3 and TD-3 MO to get far more complexed melodies going.
      I also like the random pattern along with the random patterns of the TD-3s. Love the sound of it.

    Yes, my original TR-606 really doesn't have that many things, I needed a second 606 and when I found out that it had a randomizer, and individual outputs to process with my table and analog pedals, I didn't hesitate to buy the Rd-6 at a ridiculous price.
    I never thought I would say this, but the TR-606 has been my favorite machine for manual shuffling, now the RD-6 is my strangest and coolest drum machine to make my electro techno music.
    The Roland RD-110 clap sounds so great that I can't tell the difference.
    I also managed to calibrate my RD-6 with my original, which sounds darker and less bright than the RD-6.
    The distortion after internal calibration is when it gets the real push, with the TD-3 I did the same and managed to make it sound like the original 303.
    So here I have 2 analog drum machines and analog bass, and with a randomizer, USB, MIDI in one. Don't you think it's great for the price?
    I really like these replicas and I maintain the spirit of the classic metallic metallic color, I love this color, good atmosphere of electro techno Detroit. 😊😊👍💪

    Today, I made a purchase thanks to this video !
    I just bought myself a dirt-cheap red Behringer RD-6 that was on sale, to make pretty much what you suggested here.
    I intend to process its ear-piercing 80’s drum sounds through my 2600 to morph them into more exciting modular beats, and as an aside use it as an 8-track trigger sequencer for the rest of my gear.
    This effectively brings a surrogate “second DFAM” to my setup, all for 80€ and a bunch of patch cables.
    Granted, it will not look as cool on videos, but the price is hard to beat !
    I find that using entry level gear as ultra-cheap Cv or gate sequencers is an underused trick in the modular world.
    Thanks for drawing my attention to it (you just saved me the 800€ that a second DFAM would have costed me) !

    I love the rd 6, I got A green rd 6 too and ive used it as itself, i love the distortion effect and the snare is fire 🔥, ive also used it as a midi controller, it works well as a sequencer for other sounds, and i love the random feature , great for ideas, wish the cymbol and clap would be seperate volume but beyond that it's a fun cheap tool to play with.
    People associate plastic with poor quality, but as a 3d printing fanatic I think plastic is incredible, theres so many types of plastic too, some plastic is trashy but a lot of modern plastic is tough and very nice for stuff like this

As no-one wanted analog they were very affordable and I bought a 606 for £120, to go with my MC-202 (£125), SH-101 (£78) AND Pro-One (£125). All of them still work but I thought I'd treat myself to an RD-6 for the MIDI, individual outputs and the clap which is not on the 606. Like you I've grown up with the 606. It's good to know there are mods out there for the RD-6. Funny that you mention 6 has the color Green in your mind, I do a similar thing but for me 6 is Cyan.
    I got the TD-3-MO recently and had a similar experience and worried if it would make any difference from 303 samples. Build quality is sturdy and plasticy likewise.
    I have to say it is 100% worth owning, and if desired can sound anything from just like a 303 to completely different synth; the patchbay really had me sold too. It also has a lot of red LEDs in it, and it is up there with Teenage engineering in it's sheer cheekiness. I love how unapologetic it is.

    I think it's a common pitfall to judge the RD-6 simply based on its internal sounds. I really like the straight-forward usability of the sequencer (I find the track mode a bit clunky though, but probably just didn't explore it enough so far). I think in that price range it's also perfect with regards to sequencing external gear, basically being a full 8 part MIDI sequencer. For example to trigger sounds on any other sampler, and especially to sequence drums from the DAW without looking at the screen.
    Also, when distorted through an FX pedal, it's really charming. I might have to acquire a cheap overdrive/distortion pedal though to tweak a chosen separate output channel. I tend to get tired of some of the sounds rather quickly, although they certainly have their own appeal.
    Didn't use the trigger outputs so far, as I don't have any modular gear, but I'm looking forward to it becoming handy when/if needed.

      @bahutu802 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StephenMcLeod Hey, a (turned out, not so) short question if you don't mind:
      I saw people who took a trigger output of one piece of gear and sent it to the sync in port of another piece of gear.
      Now, in the RD-6 manual it says that the RD-6 sends out +15V trigger signals, but as far as I understand, the typical sync in signal on non-modular gear would be less (is it 5V? or 10V?). So I guess I could fry a device when sending the RD-6's 15V to a sync in port. Is that right? Or do (non-modular) devices normally tolerate higher voltages in their sync ports?
      In particular, I'm evaluating whether I would be able to send the RD-6 trigger into Keystep 37's sync input. loopop does that ( th-cam.com/video/I3iaHNIJFsg/w-d-xo.html ), but with modular gear, not the RD-6, so no idea what voltage he sends into the Keystep's sync in. Unfortunately, nothing can be found in the Keystep manual which would tell me the expected / max sync in voltage...
      Please, don't feel urged to answer in case you can't give an educated guess. Granted, if you answer, you won't have any responsibility in case I act upon in ;)

    • @StephenMcLeod
      @StephenMcLeod  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bahutu802 That's a good question. 15v is pretty high, and it might cause problems for some bits of gear (like Pocket Operators, which specifically state they accept up to 5v inputs), but given the way the Keystep is designed, I would expect it to be fine. Modular is about 10v, but can be higher, so it's in that realm. I would contact Arturia and ask for the tolerance if you are unsure, or you could use some kind of attenuator to bring it down. :)

      Yeah I hear you. I've had plenty of crappy build from Behringer in the past... though I've also had really crappy products from boutique companies too. There are some other ethics questions, but honestly many of those are equally applicable to other major manufacturers (we are sitting on TH-cam, owned by Alphabet, with me writing on a MacBook, after all....) There are plenty of places I don't shop or won't buy from, but I think I have 'ethical capitalism' fatigue to an extent at this point in my life. Most of my day job involves wrestling with those issues in detail, and I can't quite bring myself to get too deep into them when it comes to my one real escape. I am well aware that's an inconsistency and probably a failing, but I think we all live with our inconsistencies - and I'm relatively comfortable with that notion - for now. I spent many years raging against everything and all it did was drive me to despair.

    • @StephenMcLeod

      Lots of ways. It has usb midi input and also DIN Midi input. Those are the easiest ways, though the DIN Midi will require a midi interface for your computer. There's also analog sync in, but that gets more complicated.

    I have a translucent purple one.
    It does not nail the 606 sound perfectly but who cares? Honestly the 606 is kind of a piece of crap to be honest. The snare is cool and the hats are great but the rest of the sounds are garbage, and I've had multiple units so I know it's not just a matter of me getting a bad one. Also, you didn't get a clap, you didn't get individual outputs, you didn't get distortion, you didn't get even get MIDI for fuck's sake.
    For the money the Behringer RD-6 is a complete no-brainer, especially if you buy one used. I got a TD-3 and a RD-6 for $150USD used... which is incredibly cheap considering that not that long ago (from my point of view) before the analog renaissance the least expensive 303 clone you could buy was a x0xb0x which typically sold for at least $350 and often went for more, and if you wanted a 606 that was easily $500-600.
    Out of the box the RD-6 doesn't really sound all that impressive, but cute in that retro plonky sort of way. It really shines when you route the various sounds through FX and give them their own channels on a mixer and really push 'em hard. Proper electro beatbox with the right mixing!
    That being said, I rarely reach for my RD-6 because I have the RD-8 as well and the RD-8 is just plain better in nearly every way.

    • @StephenMcLeod
      @StephenMcLeod  ปีที่แล้ว

      Translucent purple seems real nice. I actually looked at getting an original 606 as they were going for okayish prices a year or so ago, but like you said, they were so limited it wasn't worth it. The RD-6 gets me to where I want to be, though I am sure one day I will regret it when they end up worth 20x what they were ha.
