Cruising with Rick during the pandemic, this brought back memories of a particular trip to Rome during the ATP tour. I still remember the vibrancy of holding this athletic contest close to the ancient Coliseum, the exuberance and friendly welcome of the crowds, the WINES! and the food stalls along the area as we entered.
While this is the Italian Open, it is called the "Rome Open." While it is played on clay courts, sports writers refer to the French Open as the only one played on clay.
Not to knock the French Open, it is in a city with a rude, expensive environment --and thin sour wines, (I stil l harbor some resentment over my first visit to Paris in 1950. The taxi driver did not give me change and pretended not to understand me. I sat until the doorman came out, and got the change. Five years after the war in which one of my cousins landed on Omaha Beach (D-day + 2).and 25 years after my father was wounded whille patrolling for German submarines in the North Atlantic.

No, actually Gladiators didn't fight to the death. At least not all the time, Gladiators were expensive and well taken care off, they were today's sprotsman, if you had one, you didn't want to lose one. The common misconception is that they fought to death, but no, they mostly didn't. A big portion of them were even volunteers.
