Dutch Barge Sea Crossing Safety Checks

  • It is hoped this will help you to stay safe. Your barge has probably been working the inland waterways for many years and now you are asking it to cross over the sea in rougher conditions. If you fail to get your fuel tanks cleaned there is a considerable chance that when your vessel starts to pitch and roll about in the swell the sludge which has resided for many years unmoved in the fuel tanks will explode into a thick goo that will block your filters and can even be thick enough to block the delivery pipe...
Do not cut back on this area of your barges pre-sea crossing service as you not only endanger your barge but also the lives of the people on board. Stay safe and spend the money to have them cleaned out...

Good advice! Sat in a canal basin for 2 years you're going to accumulate a lot of sludge ...put it in a cocktail shaker.! = RNLI

it's always a good idea to have half a dozen filters extra !

Hi Helena. I hope the video will help others. The fuel filters became blocked so quickly once in the swells of the sea. It had been requested that the tanks had to be cleaned before the delivery took place but this was never done.

***** Glad you liked it and I am pleased to say I lived to tell the tail and publish the video. It's amazing that most barges diesel tanks are filthy and the filters just block up as soon as the barge stats to rock & roll which can have tragic results when your at sea. Enough from me - glad you enjoyed it and take a look at this one as well as it also has a few lessons - th-cam.com/video/O0AchGoFlDw/w-d-xo.html

Hi Peter, You moved my Barge with Keith a few years ago from Brighton to Nuiepoort. Are you still doing this as I need to bring her back to the UK ?

Could you not set up a pair of filters so you could switch between them when one gets dirty ???

    • @brucepeter2007

hi there. thanks for your comment. we have had barges with 4 filters that have all clogged as soon as the fuel tanks start moving when you get on the open sea. worse one was our last trip when with all new filters fitted they blocked only a short distance out of Dunkirk. Its the owners responsibility to get the fuel tanks cleaned as its part of their insurance but they cut corners. The diesel pox you get in a diesel fuel tank has to be seen to be believed and once in a swell the tanks get all that sludge moving and lots find its way into your fuel line with the usual result. You never get the problem on a canal but the open sea with a swell stirs it all up... see also th-cam.com/video/SwCfWXbN_xc/w-d-xo.html

How long did it take? And how long so you have to study to be a sailor to do this? :)

Hi Kea. The channel crossing times can never be a simple answer as these barges are very slow and we have to asses not only the capability of the barge without pushing the engine and gearbox together with the tide times and direction of flow to get the best crossing time across the channel.
Keith - the skipper has around 48years experience in many vessels so he is the best and most qualified skipper taking Dutch barges across the English Channel and beyond - I myself have only 8 years time served on barges but I am accepted by insurance companies as a competent engineer and crew... I hope that answers your question.

    Hallo Peter,
We made the wheelhouse and the rear cabin interior at our shop and quay in Groningen for an earlier owner, seven or eight years ago. Is she still called Vertrouwen? Funny to think she's ended up on the South Coast. We'll come over and look for her next time we visit the family in Dorset.
Good tips for rough crossings with an old barge, they need to be thought of when crossing the IJsselmeer or the Zeeland estuaries too.
    Long live the Lifeboat men!

+sadler bootwerk Hi Andrew. I know Keith (The Skipper) has sent you a reply however it is also courteous to have the reply here so I duly reproduce it as the lessons to others are clear...
Dear Andrew as far as we know the vessel is still registered as Vertrowen
despite no name painted on the hull. The new owner assured me the fuel tanks had been cleaned and ready for delivery. The Dutch skipper left the vessel at
Sasdijk and if you know the area it is in the middle of nowhere. There was
little fuel, the VHF radio phone was not working, the generator which powered
the air compressor for starting the engine and the bow thruster was also faulty.
This gave us many problems. The new owner was requested to supply provisions, have the fuel tanks cleaned for a safe and legal voyage to its new home in England.
The wheelhouse you built was good and kept us dry despite the weather.
Our company New Generation Marine www.ngmarine.co.uk have been delivering
Dutch ships for over 40 years and are well known throughout Holland. Peter is
one of our new permanent crew members and putting videos online is a good idea as a way of getting the message to the new owners to clean the fuel tanks or you put the delivery crews lives at risk. My personal details are Keith Willard, the skipper and company director. Contact details mvirma@hotmail.com.
      Kindest regards
      Keith

      Dear Keith and Peter,
Thanks for the quick reaction. Glad the wheelhouse kept you dry. Sounds like you were let down and put in a dangerous situation.
Thanks again for sharing your insights with these videos. If you're ever in Groningen ...
      Kind regards, Andrew
