- This week we sail Jago's 122 year old Dutch sailing tjalk over from Vlissingen in the Netherlands (apologies I kept saying Holland!) to Greenwich in the UK. A voyage of three parts; calm seas, great sailing, and a rather rough motor to the UK coast.

Beth, you were magnificent on this trip, on deck for best part of 24 hrs reassuring me and showing great sailing skill throughout. I’m really so happy you enjoyed it and I’m privileged to have had you there. Now clean out your bilges missy!
Couldn't agree more - 22 hour+ watches, calm advice and excellent sailing skills - you were a dream to sail with and I hope I get the privilege again. Also an excellent video summing the trip up!

This was fantastic Beth! The filming was great. I have never been on open water like that so it was great to see. Jago’s boat looks really great. Also enjoyed the short bit of night filming. I have never seen video of a boat sailing/motoring on the Thames, or any river, in the dark. Really excited for you, Jago and the crew. Bertie will be glad you will be back. Wonderful video clip of Jago sitting there... wow.. so very personal in a way.. I noted one board down when the sail was up. How much side slip was going on during that part. Most excellent all around. Hope your voice gets better quick. Sounds like it did by the end of the video. Thank you!
Yes, we only have the leeward lee board in the water when on a tack. Without the lee board there actually is quite a lot of slip so it really helps. But they're only really useful with some sidewards pressure, not just motoring forwards.
Wow Beth! Just WOW! That was truly an amazing video. It makes me appreciate the skill sets one needs to be able to sail on the open seas. You seem so very at home out there. Really interesting . I love the sound of the water along the boat when she’s under sail. Having done a very little sailing as a kid, I had forgotten that “music”.

Yes, we had them in when we were sailing or when there was a wind or tide from one side. We learned they're not needed just for going ahead but improve the course if you have some sideways force.

Are the sail colours used on Dutch sailing barges a matter of personal choice, cost etc.
Or, is it a traditional colour and would you have any information about why?
(I’m interested in the black sails and if there’s a historical connection or just personal aesthetic so to speak...I’m waffling sorry 🤭)

It's traditional, yes. Although brown sails are damaged less by UV so can last longer.
Great video Beth, I remember Canice bringing his boat across from Holland, one question? the Police had to check your passports? I am a brit living in Canada and still have UK citizenship and a passport, did passport rules change since brexit for UK passport holders now in Europe?
Yes, sadly Brexit means we don't have freedom of movement and if we hadn't got our passports stamped we could be classed as over-stayers. It's very sad as I used to go to the Netherlands often and didn't even need a passport. Canice was on this trip too; bringing his expertise.
Great video. Can I ask what the story was? Is it someone's new boat? Or they'd just had a holiday and needed a hand to bring it back to the UK?
It was my friend Jago's boat and he bought it in the Netherlands and is bringing her back to the UK. In all honesty what we're doing is slowly stealing all of the Dutch barges over there and bringing them back to the UK secretly. 😉

How many miles was the trip across channel?
It was around 150km from Vlissingen to Ramsgate then around 130km from Ramsgate to Greenwich in London.
90 miles to 80 miles approximately
why don't you sail all the way
The first part was next to no wind and the latter part was too much wind!
Very good clip, however one should have a "navigator's Notebook" to record the fixes rather than scribbling on the chart AND you should plot the DR track (Dead Reckoning) track with anticipated times. I presume you cheated using GPS bearings rather than visuals off the compass ( and remember the CADET rule which is converting from Compass Bearing to True bearing (for plotting) Add East variation and /or Compass Deviation. Subtract West variation. Impressive as crossing the shipping lanes at 3-4 knots can be scary! 😊
If I'm honest we didn't have a lot of equipment and I didn't have time to do a passage plan so I did some basic route-planning, using a GPS fix backed up with some compass fixes. We headed into the estuary between Margate and the shallow water of Margate sands so we really just needed to wiggle through some slight shallows so it wasn't too complex as we also had a lot of marks to use. Yes, I still have "west is best and East is least" in my head for compass correction! Of course somebody with your experience will notice that we're not really navigating "properly" here. 😉
@@TillerQueen in this modern age one might as well carry two hand-held GPS units and just load your way-points in the GPS. It all should be fine in West Europe but I have suspicions about charting standards in out-of-way places? I presume you will sail your craft to Europe or Scandinavia when you have her completed?
@@josephblansjaar5871 I'm not sure where I'll be taking the barge although I'd love to get over to the Netherlands again. The canals are just so lovely and the towns and villages would be great to explore! Although I will be doing more yacht sailing!
@@TillerQueen I've been plagued by thoughts of your ventilation throughout the barge. Have you considered leaving aan air gap at the top and bottom of each dividing bulkhead as you divide the barge into cabin spaces? Fully sealed cabins can become very stuffy/hot whilst leaving a gap between bulkhead and deckhead will allow natural ventilation? Just a thought. Cheers
@@josephblansjaar5871 I did think of that but then would lose privacy. Usually all of the doors will remain open anyway but I'll also be adding ventilation to the outside (when I have the internal layout) and will also be adding door ventilation too.

I actually play saxophone and can also play the bugle with the lip ring. It really doesn't get in the way.
