      Steenfott Aquatics because they don't have the intelligence or humanity to even comprehend the beauty of a project like this.

    Now that's the way a tank should look. Not all over stacked and still trying to put more in. I give this tank a grade A for creativity and just all around everything, yyeeaahhh.

    What a great idea! I never thought about painting the back of the tank black. Thank you for that. Will use when I set up my next tank, hopefully African cichlids.

    • @allaboutdiy1375
      @allaboutdiy1375  ปีที่แล้ว

      It looks much better than the tape on stuff and it’s easier to put on. Plus if you ever want to take it off you can easily scrape it off with a razor blade scraper. Win win. It’s cheaper too! Thanks for watching

      @All About DIY yeah once I tried the fake background, I immediately tore it off and zip tied all my cords/hoses together just to keep the clutter down. My biggest tank I've ever had was a 90 gallon. I had a 90 gallon Asian tank. A 55 convict cichlid tank and a 36 bow live bearer community tank. Now I have nothing up right now because I'm looking for a place but it's like having a dog. I can't see myself without having a dog and fish.

    The following is:
    The best lighting for African cichlids is Blau Lumina Led 152 special reef
    But, you have to know how to program it, do not use automatic programming
    Schedule manual
    My aquarium is 2 meters long and is lined back and sides with panels of - Juwel
    So the light gets more concentrated in the aquarium
    To avoid excessive light and the opposite
    The programation:
    Coordinates 10 South
    34 East
    Midday Function 15:30 Intensity Filter - 60% - yes, - 60% Lake Malawi is deep
    Nubellate Days, to your taste, 2 to 5%, as Africa is constant heat and rains little as we have already decreased the light intensity I recommend 2% for occurrence of cloudy days
    The Blau Lumina Led 152 special reef - special reef is expectular for dusk with its dimming channels - 2 actinic LED lights per plate
    And dawn is also phenomenal

      Nini Martin ok it sounds like you have done your research. I'll keep that in mind when I upgrade the lighting. Thanks for the tip.

    Hands down thats the most spectacular cichlid tank setups on youtube. Fully top class setup. No stupid plastic plants just rock and sand. I have a 150 setup with 2 penguin 400s, rock, and plain sand. All my babies have their own apartment and i have a light system that fades during the day as if becomes night and at night it slowly goes from blue to nealry blacked out to a deep purple. I had it made with a color wheel filter. But that tank is damn awsome beyond words. I love tanks that are set up like nature. You see people putting all these dumb decorations and plastic plants in and it just ruins it!!! I have a feeder tank that i keep stocked with feeders for my peacock bass and my pacu that are in my 150 and my feeder tank is a 30 gallon. Some of my feeders have managed to avoid the death net and have grown quite large and i have given them respect and allow them to live and not net them. But even my feeder tank is set up natural with sand and rock and is beautiful as well.

    • @allaboutdiy1375
      @allaboutdiy1375  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joseph Allan wow! What a compliment! Thank you very much I really appreciate it! I couldn’t agree more about just having sand and rocks like nature intended for these fish. I can’t stand fake plants haha. I think we just became best friends lol. Your setup sounds great I would love to see it! Joseph, you have yourself a great day and thanks for stopping by and for the awesome comment. It makes all the hard work worth it. Stay tuned for more on this tank!!!

    Have you tried "reef rocks"
    And go full black rocks.
    Your tank is painted black so if you put in "black decore" it will blend with the black paint but still have enough different textures to spot the "black rocks"
    It's going to keep the spotlight on the beautiful baby tropheus cichlid

    beautiful job ... you may want to consider placing your rocks first , then add your sand. African cichlids ( mbunas ) dig like crazy and can easily cause large rocks to topple if they are placed on top of the sand ... I had to "redo" my tank for that reason ... again beautiful job

    • @allaboutdiy1375
      @allaboutdiy1375  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      RC Basher yeah I have had about a million people tell me that but for these fish and this particular setup it didn’t matter if the rocks went on top of the sand because they don’t dig like mbuna or like peacocks and haps. It’s been set up for a long time now and no issues. If I had gone with the 2 aforementioned fish I certainly would have put the rocks in first however I would not have been able to achieve the height and look of this display. I do agree that it’s risky but it payed off. Thanks for watching and for the kind words. Have a great day.

    O.K . so, since February, how many rocks have fallen from the incessant digging? Sorry, but to my minds eye when dealing with Rift Valley cichlids, you have to adhere the basement rocks to the floor of the tank. Otherwise, the Hap's and Troph's will undermine them and cause them to tumble...Just curious, I think the tank looks great, but did it stay that way?

    • @mozarth
      @mozarth 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They do dig but the sand seems fine enough to not allow them to form tunnels as it would settle itself back into a flat form. There may be small slides but I doubt there will be a major event.

    • @themannygee9079
      @themannygee9079 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My same thought when i saw him pouring the sand in first. I lost my largest Cichlid this way and never plan on making that mistake again.

    • @allaboutdiy1375
      @allaboutdiy1375  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Manuel Garcia sorry about your loss. Always sucks. I havnt had a single casualty from rocks falling and smashing a fish. I pressed the largest rocks down into the sand so they contacted the rocks below and then jammed the smaller rocks in around them to keep them tight. As far as I can tell, not a single rock has moved and all fish are accounted for.

    Hell yeah I appreciate it, was hoping I didn't have to buy a new filter and substrate , I'll send a few pics soon, the tank is actually up n running but has mixed fish in it and I simply didn't know what I was doing as far as stocking, some friends came over and basically told me I was gonna do something with my tank and filled it with fresh water, treated it then put some fresh fish in it.....then I moved while a buddy held on to my fish for me, just got them back and am now treating for ick which sucks (I'm winning though n haven't lost any fish)
    So ya it's basically a salt tank with mixed fresh fish in it that have bin doing well till the move
    Now I'm looking to be more fish specific and know nothing
    Thanx again man

      cost of the aquarium itself was 3 grand??? Or everything..........
      BTW great idea on the white plastic pieces you put on the very bottom. I'm assuming it both keeps the sand in place, and prevents you from killing yourself when one of those boulders slips outta your hand, and shatters the bottom of the tank!!!
      Had a rock slip out of my hand scaping my 125 when I got it from about 6 inches up. Of course it was one of the biggest rocks. Took me an extra hour to move all my gravel out of the way to make sure I didn't break it!!!

      mr. FELTON well thank you. And slow and steady wins the race haha. It's especially important with sand so the tank isn't murky for 3 days after filling. Thanks for watching man. Have a good one

      SCD4 no but you would think so, I have been doing this for a long time and I know a little bit about what works and what doesn't. Plus it looks good to me that way haha. Thanks for watching I'm glad you enjoyed.

    • @SCD4
      @SCD4 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No....I meant I read it in a book and why it works, and the advantages for more reasons than just the looks. ;-]

    • @allaboutdiy1375
      @allaboutdiy1375  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SCD4 oh haha I read that wrong, my bad. Yeah I can see why it would have its advantages as opposed to just a few rocks along the bottom all the way across. In my mind it made sense because the fish would carve out territories on either side of the tank cutting down on aggression. Among other reasons. Anyways thanks for watching and commenting!!!

    Great job. Usually with an AC tank rocks go in before sand as our little friends like to 'dig' which could cause a topple if the base rocks aren't set on the tank bottom. Just 'constructive' criticism. Awesome tank.

    • @allaboutdiy1375
      @allaboutdiy1375  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah many people have mentioned that in the comments however the tropheus are not know for digging like their lake Malawi counterparts. I have kept these cichlids in smaller tanks and tested to see if they would dig under rocks but they never did after 6 months so I knew it would be safe. Thanks for watching and commenting your thoughts in a respectful fashion. People can’t seem to do that now days. 👍

    Rock placement is a little spooky and not as secure from substrate shifting over time as I would like. Costly mistake potentially. I always go for horizontal setting as the widest at base for rocks. Looks more natural too.

  • @factsoverfeelings1776

    Awesome video. My only suggestion would be to place your large rocks on the that crate first then add your sand. So that your fish don't dig the sand out from under those rocks and cause a huge wet problem.

    • @allaboutdiy1375
      @allaboutdiy1375  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Mclean it's a little late for that lol but luckily the fish only sift through about 1/4 of an inch of sand. Basically they don't dig like a lot of South American cichlids. It hasn't been a problem in previous (smaller) tanks that I've had. Thanks for the tip tho.
