  • This week, our hearts are heavy as we come to terms with the tragic loss of both of the Ximungwe Female's cubs. The circumstances surrounding their disappearance remain a mystery, adding to the sorrow of this somber event. It all began with the discovery of the Ximungwe Female, accompanied by a duiker carcass hoisted high in a marula tree, with only one cub by her side. The first cub vanished about a week ago, leaving us with unanswered questions.
As the morning light revealed the scene, a sense of unease settled in, amplified by the distant calls of hyenas and the solemn demeanor of the Ximungwe Female. Upon closer inspection by Matt, our suspicions were confirmed, and the weight of tragedy hung heavy in the air.
Later, Melvin's arrival brought further confirmation, as he uncovered a small tuft of leopard cub fur and scattered bones nearby. Despite the Ximungwe Female's persistent contact calls throughout the morning, our hopes of unraveling the events of the previous evening were dashed. It's not uncommon for a mother leopard to mourn her lost cub for days, a poignant reminder of the unbreakable bond between mother and offspring.
Although we were unable to capture her haunting calls, we take solace in reflecting on the cherished moments shared with the Ximungwe Female and her recent litter through a collection of recent sightings. It's a bittersweet conclusion to this chapter of their lives, as we honor their memory and the profound connection they shared. Join us as we pay tribute to the resilience of nature and the enduring spirit of the Ximungwe Female.

I respect the hyenas role in the ecosystem, but for me at least they're a very hard creature to like

Sad. They and cheetah really has a tough life out in the wild. Not only prey to others … even when they get food. Their food might be stolen by other bigger cats or hyena. Not suprise if they go extinct first. At least hyena n lion move in number so they are “safer”

Hi LGR. That was such a very sad and short video clip, which clearly showed that the 9-year-old Ximungwe has sadly lost both of her 2 small cubs at about 4 months old. Throughout their very short life, they were very relaxed, but a pair of delightful and energetic bundles of joy that provided some memorable and unforgettable moments and sightings with their good, patiently devoted and highly experienced mum altogether. Weren't they? I'm sure the cubless third time mum is feeling very sad that both of her 2 cubs have gone, but at the same time, very cross and angry with the ever menacing and murderous hyenas for killing at least one or both of them in such a short space of time already.
It's not her fault at all that she has lost them, but as has been the case many, many times I the past, luck just wasn't on her side at all. But maybe if they had been left in the safety of a tree where other ground predators can't climb, then do you think it's possible that a tree would have increased the chances of their survival? I know she can't do anything about it now, but I'm sure she also feels like, although it won't be a wise move, attempting to kill and/or attack a hyena for the untimely sad death of her two cubs that won't ever be forgotten but will be very fondly remembered. Even if the cubs didn't live for as long as she and all of us would have liked, she has at least got a glimmer of hope, as she has raised 2 single male cubs from each of her 2 previous single litters to independence already, so that's better then none at all as far as I'm concerned.
I know she won't understand what everyone's saying to her, but when you next see her, can you just pass on my condolences to her as a sign of faultless respect and sympathy for me please? But it is nonetheless, so terribly sad that they've gone which is going to be a very hard and bitter pill for her and everyone else to swallow. Although we can't read or see what's going through her mind right now, but I'm sure she's thinking of all the good and fun times she has had with them currently. She has everyone's sympathy.
Those pesky hyenas are such dangerous, wicked, evil and greedy murderous scavengers for what we all suspect they've done to those two poor but innocently delightful cubs. Maybe in roughly a weeks time, she will come back into heat and seek out either the Senegal Bush male or the slightly bigger, much more stocky, similar aged and huge Maxims male for a new set of breeding purposes over there.
But she did her impressive and very best with them. They will most certainly be remembered by all of those who were lucky to see, watch and meet them. Their curiosity and energy was just emotionally adorable. Let's all hope she will have a lot more better and successful luck with her next brood. We'd expect them to be born in or around early to mid July, but that's only if all goes well really. So it's fingers crossed for her and the very next time. It's going to be always sad when lion, leopard and cheetah cubs don't survive to independence and adulthood, but that's just the way life is for them, unfortunately. But the good and most important main thing is the mothers can live to breed again in order to produce another litter that will live much more successfully.
Although the clip yet again did not mention her, but when you are able to do so, would you be willing and kind enough to put up an update on the much loved Tsalala lioness for me as well please? It hasn't been mentioned yet, but she is very heavily pregnant with her own very first litter of cubs now at long last. I was just starting to fear that she was infertile as it took her a long time to fall pregnant, but as is the case now, she isn't infertile at all what so ever thankfully. She is so stuffed and heavy with cubs, that I shouldn't think it'll be too long before she gives birth over there eventually. I hope the next update on her isn't to far away.
Hope to hear from you shortly.

I am a cat lady and i have interfered many times to help the homeless cats when they are in trouble be that because kids threw sticks and stones at them or when big dogs tried to attack them. I don't just let "nature takes its course". I follow what my God's command to help those in need if I am able to do so ... although i myself am scared of big dogs/rottweilers, out of empathy for the cats I braved myself to shoo away these dogs from attacking the cats. I also confronted groups of evil boys who wanted to torture these poor cats. They may be youngsters, but they are bigger and taller than my petite self. I really don't understand when park rangers with their guns, vehicles, etc. can't manage to scare the predators aways from harming the cubs of lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, etc., I believe that when there is a will, there is a way, their hearts must be made of stones!

You guys are undoubtedly interesting to listen to, yet there is a bunch of things I can't take in your relationship to animals. I see no course of nature but people with cameras going on a show for views and likes. It seems to me, you have probably partly forgotten who you are and what your mission is. All that is really sad, to say the least. I dunno about you, but I've heard of dozens of leopards dead in snares in the neighboring reserves. Then you talking about cub deaths as if it's nothing. Have you heard about what has been done to protect Amur leopard cubs in the wild, for instance? To me such an attitude to their African counterparts is of great surprise. You behave like you have 1000s of years ahead with millions of cat individuals... Every life matters in the world, but a cub's life comes first. Hoping for an understanding and no offense, with best regards from one of your viewers.
