I know I am 3 years late however I have only been part of a sewing group that sends things to kids and teens in other countries who don't have access/money for water/food much less things like pads. Many know that having your period is a negative thing in other countries like Africa and when the girls have their periods they cannot go to school. I got an email from a young girl/teen and all she wants for Christmas is different sized pads that she can simply rinse and later take down to the creek/river with a washboard and wash privately. I won't lie reading that she and all the girls get bullied over having a natural woman thing, it effecting her education, and she would rather quit school all together than have the monthly embarrassment if it starts while she's in school just made me want to cry for her. So I emailed the sewing group I am apart of and we're all on the hunt for different patterns, sizes, best fabrics for their type of environment, etc and we are going to start making reusable liners, light to heavy flow pads, and wet bags to send to those in need so they no longer have to miss school/work/etc.

If you don't like your walking foot try a Teflon coated foot it really helps with sewing on top of the PUL fabric.

Pin holes in the PUL? Might be avoided by using clips or placing pins in the stitching area and parallel with your stitching. Thanks for the video!

what if you just use a serger instead? eliminates the need for trimming when you’re making a ton!
How many core layers of the bamboo terry do you recommend for a heavy flow (think post partum)? And how many pads could I make with 1/2 yard?
The tutorial is very good, but...there is a lot of information missing. The names of the fabrics used is the main one like what on earth is PUL ??? but also where it can be purchased and is it available in all countries? I live in the UK for instance. Also, one viewer asked how much liquid it would take aproximately, no answer to that either!!!

Pul is PolyUrethane Laminate, ie fabric coated with a really thin layer of a special type of waterproof “plastic” that is washable in hot (60°C) washing machine programs

I think that's my main problem, I don't take my time around curves, which is almost the most frustrating to me. My first few pads I used terry washcloths for the core and wow talk about fuzz lol I can't find any zorb or thin core products around here, but I did find some bamboo fleece I'm going to try. I did purchase your tess pattern which I am excited to try since there are no curves! This is the first video I have seen that used the flannel or what you used, as what is against you. I really prefer that way. I don't understand why they are made with the patterns facing you to to get stained 🧐 I am using brown flannel against the body so its easier to hide stains

Hello. I downloaded the pattern. In looking at it do you cut the pattern in the fold because if so both sides are the same size and it looks like in your video one side is smaller than the other like typical pads. Thank you for the help. 😊

I saw in a previous video you recommended wind proof fleece as a backer. I will be making pads for the first time and I will be ordering all my supplies online. I bought your flare pattern because it will be needed for heavy flow and good coverage. I can find Zorb and I have flannel and fleece on hand, do I need PUL or should I use the wind prof fleece? Help! lol!
PUL will offer the highest protection, nothing gets through it.

Hello can you please tell me what is the machine called that you press the poppers on with? I have a hand version of this but due to arthritis in my hands i cannot squeeze the clamp together. Also i use KAM plastic poppers and have lots of them so will your clamp work with the plastic as well as the metal poppers? Love your video and is so easy to follow thanks:-)
I’m sorry about the delayed response. The press I’m using is from KAM! It’s just their basic tabletop press. More expensive but easier on your body.

I saw someone use a towel for their inner core.
You can definitely use fleece, just stick to cotton only for skin health. Regular towels can work, but you'd want to do two lines of zigzag stitching or serge the edge to prevent the cloth from falling apart. Using regular towel is very messy, so finding some cheap baby towels can give you layering options that don't fall apart as much.
Id suggest sewing with a walking foot, it makes the pricess of holding together as well the stretch.
Can u do more absorbency layers like 3 different thickness and supper absorb ant layers thru.entire pads
I have better incontinence pads using 2 layers Zorb, 1 core layer PLU. Long pads cuz the liquid squirts out both ways. 1 layer not enough

Why do you need to put on 2 kam snaps?
The 2 snaps are optional, depending on whether you want a tighter fit. I like 2 snap settings so that the tighter setting is for when wearing and the looser setting is for folding up and storing in a bag, especially to have for my purse. If you don't foresee needing an extra snap, then save your snaps. 😉👍

How do you wash pads? What temp? It can't be some low temp, but don't know how it will be to wash them on highest?
I soak in a cold/lukewarm water bucket with Dr Bronners castile soap & a bit of whitening oxy powder. Rinse clean in a few buckets, spin dry. Drape over fan. Dry in a couple of hours. Good luck

It was a cotton flannel on the outside, I've seen it at Joann Fabrics a lot. The waterproof was PUL, which is a little harder to find, but a Google search will get you a few options.
Raincoats are made with pul. So if you have one you or your children have out grown, you can use that. You can also repurpose those modern cloth diapers.

Just curious, how much fluid can this hold? I’m needing to make something similar to a poise pad but my mom is very concerned these wouldn’t hold for incontinence. No one ever comments as to how much. 1/8 c, 1/4 c? Please help, she’s really needing something.

I would make briefs, just double pad, with snaps on the side. To make it easy to get off.
I would make them like the modern cloth diaper, using diaper cloth and pul, and flannel. I like to repurpose so I have a rain coat and windbreaker that we have outgrown. So I'm going to make a pair for my mom to see if it's comfortable.

Its a water resistant fabric that is laminated, its full name is Polyurethane and usually people make cloth diapers out of out it but you can make other things too like these pads.

Love your videos! Question of why you are changing to not using basting spray?
I would like to know that too, i can only imagine for health purposes, breathing anything in if you dont have to is worth trying not to use it, but then you could always pop a mask on for when you would spray.
@@2008betwixt Most basting sprays don't have compounds that would irritate someone not extra sensitive unless you're going crazy with it in a zero ventilation space.
I think it's more that it's not as accessible for everyone, it's not cheap, and manufacturing it isn't great for the earth. You could make a homemade starch that would wash out that could be used, you'd just want to make small batches as needed and be prepared to let it dry down more before trusting the hold.
Make sure to get yourself a walking foot for stretch fabric,
On my singer machine, I like the walking foot, but with my Bernina, I prefer no walking foot. :)
