    An Interesting little video, I regularly remove Genisys from ex Ambulances destined to become Motor Caravans etc. I worked on two in November and have probably done over 30 in total now plus several of the earlier even more energy hungry Phoenix systems.
    Each one I do is usually slightly different. Each converter has their own variations on the wiring it all together theme and the really top notch converters like WAS are sensible enough to also label their wiring making identification throughout the vehicle dead simple.
    I have not found a vehicle yet that has Genisys controlled headlights fortunately, because when an Ex Ambulance comes up for sale via the usual two auction houses they usually let their decommissioning vandals loose on them with wire cutters
    Rarely are the drivers control panel included when the vans are sold, and those that do have them usually have faulty displays, I have replaced a couple, the display is available from Ring but as you said the button panel tend to fall off and are certainly not really designed for access!
    Like Phoenix before it Genisys is pretty archaic now!
    I am actually looking forward to seeing an incarnation that is Smart alternator aware and uses proper battery charging via a B2B etc and is intelligent enough to know that the chassis battery isn't flat whilst the glow plugs are warming up but those Ambulances will still all be in service for a while yet.
    qed this is a very assertive Helga in mine:

      Genisys can and does do CAN bus, but I think some of the issue is fitting multiple platforms and availability of the data. For example most Renault trucks have at least two CAN busses. Wheelan certainly do use can and the CENCOM gear is becoming more prevalent but the current crop of Merc's we look after (19/20 reg) are still Genisys. You are right about the Carnation Pheonix and we have one for a teardown soon.
      The keypads are a pain and they aren't programmed per installation but the button legends often differ. The displays can be had elsewhere too. Button wise there isn't a lot too be done. I have re-silvered and put new legends on before but given the time it takes its really not worth it. I AM working on making a convertor that would allow our touch screens/software to work with it though.

      You'll want the minifit jr connector on the ECU. The plate will show the pinning for it and then check the pin for ignition. If the system has ever been jump started you may have a fried ECU in which case you'll see no input but the LED will be on. Ring are generally quite good about replacement/repair.

    I've actually been thinking about fitting one of these systems to my half camper/half emergency response van. I'm looking for a modular PLC system suitable for automotive use, and this looked like exactly the kind of system I want!
    But you have me stmped at 'only genisys can reprogram the ecu' - why is this and is there no other way to program the system? I wonder if the protocol between modules could be reverse engineered and then the modules could be used with a DIY ecu based on a pi or something...
    Or if there's an alternative system, that has been out long enough to find cheap second hand parts, with software available (even if i need to pay for it) - please let me know!

      Hi Margaret. Thats unlikeley to have anything to do with Genisys. We do offer removal/rewire services but you'd need to track that start fault down. Check the primer bulb on the inside of the drivers wing, this is a known common failure and will result in the engine getting no fuel. Check what the immobiliser is doing too.

    hi. we have an ex frontline Mercedes sprinter box vehicle which keeps dying. the vehicle isn't on the road every day and with the genesis system constantly on i expect it to draw power killing the batteries. we have it connected to a 230v shore line when not in use but the batteries still die. is the shore line supposed to keep the batteries charged? is there a split charger which should be cutting the draw from the chassis battery when it goes below a certain voltage? can we fully isolate the genesis system when the vehicle is off the road? any information would be great.

    • @rtechlab6254
      @rtechlab6254  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      All frontline ambulances have parasitic draw as they are designed to plug in. If it's new to you check all batteries as the AGM's have a finite life and a failed AGM can cause all manner of issues. You may also have a smaller battery under the driver's seat to check too. Do a good battery health check before you chase down anything else.
      The shore line *should* charge the main chassis battery at the very least. Most Antares/Xantrex chargers will do two or more batteries. There will be an RCD on the truck somewhere with Kassmaul auto ejects and a power LED on the connector on the Antares systems (We have Antares cables). You'll have a multi way split charge which will only use the vehicle alternator to charge when the engine is running and the chassis battery is in a good state. Again, a poor chassis battery will cause the split to never kick in.
      Isolation wise, the Genisys system only normally, but not always, draws power from the Aux/Coms battery. if it is using the Chassis battery you can fit an isolator of the correct current between the supply and Genisys bussbar. You may also need to isolate the ECU feeds as well.

      Hi Tomas
      On the ECU, Remove all connectors and wait for a minute, or better, leave overnight. Reconnect.
      A faulty battery reading could be causing this and is fairly common on a vehicle that's been jump started. Check the battery monitoring voltages at the ECU (Pinouts are on the front of the unit) and if all is good you'll need to ship it to Ring Automotive for repair. They are really good about it.

    • @rtechlab6254

      Odds are you have an Aux battery that is dead/has been removed. There will be a split charge controlled, normally Durite or Victron that will power everything as long as it is running. Once you shut the engine off the relay will drop out and kill the bus supply for the auxiliaries. Either install the Aux battery or replace it OR jump the split charge controller but watch you don't overload the main battery which will still be the original chassis specification. Install a god AGM on aux and use that for all your power in the back.

I managed to find a emergency vehicle garage who managed to fix peoblem, but cause of covid I cant travel the 100 mile round trip. The only light on the whole system is the power light on the ecu. Is there a trip switch on the system ? Any advice is greatly welcome!! thanks

    • @rtechlab6254
      @rtechlab6254  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The headlights are normally wired through, either high beam or dipped, whichever doesn't currently work. These will need wiring to bypass the system. Horn may well be too. In its state now see what doesn't work. If you have a power light on all units but no data, the ecu is toast. If you have nothing on the other units you have lost the first data cable from the ecu, or have a short. If you are closer to us we can look at it

    • @rtechlab6254
      @rtechlab6254  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends a lot on the way its setup. Generaly if you look at the modules it'll tell you what is wired to what. The ECU takes all inputs and the other units are output modules only on most. The most common problems I see are that the headlight wiring passes through the system, so your high beam goes through and then it provides a left and right high beam to give the headlight flash. If you goo slow and work round each circuit in turn it's not so bad. I have seen ambulances that have been converted to manual switching after a Genisys system failed.

    • @rtechlab6254

      Charge the battery or find the supply to the Genisys system and isolate it. There will normally be a large maxi fuse or bolt in labelled Genisys. Pull this and the large molex on the ECU and go for it. Alternatively allow the batteries to eaqualise. It's the voltage droop that causes it. The modules start to boot, the brown out glitches the uC and it wipes the flash. The chips do have protection from this but it was never enabled.
