The manipulation of “strong women” throughout this song is such a masterpiece. It is so layered, intricate…I could talk at length about the many meanings behind “strong women” that Raye explores…
the coolest thing I think Ive ever heard a man say "we as men need to do better". I genuinely wish more people would make that same statement to their male relatives and friends, Toxic behaviour isn't called out anywhere enough. If something isn't cool then pull them up on it don't attempt to laugh it off or try to excuse it. (that kinda goes for people in general but male toxicity is a very real thing). I love Rayes ability to be so brilliantly descriptive with her writing and the sad fact is most women have some experience of sexual assault, violence or harassment and often those traumas are down played or they are made to feel like its their own fault or worse that they are over reacting. This song is an incredibly accurate description of the experiences, hearing her sing it live gives you chills.
That song was... a lot... the first time I listened to it when I listened to the whole album My 21st Century Blues, I got teary eyed in the middle of the street and I knew this was gonna be one of those songs I absolutely love but can't listen to often... Edit: this song said everything it feels like and.... God... that bridge was so real and vulnerable cause it's so hard to say but yeah, you blame yourself and you feel the same although you know deep down it wasn't your fault... it's a hard thing to admit, that you don't feel valid in your pain and trauma; it takes a lot of strength to even just say it, so to put it in a song and release it... I can't even imagine
Thanks for sticking thru the reaction and helping get this message out. Her portrayal in this was hard to watch but 100% what it feels like to go thru this sort of thing.
Only thing that bothers me about society is that they neglect male victims and ridicule them for even "letting" a woman or other man touch them like that. "you must've liked/wanted it." "Oh you're so lucky everyone's throwing themselves at your feet"... That's just fucked up that it happens
