Both hated each other's pick so between them and there subs it became a Civil War for a few days. Hope they be friends again
I met Bill Paxton at a convention in London about 6 months before he passed away.
Most people were getting Aliens and Terminator items autographed whereas I got a copy of Frailty signed.
He shook my hand and went straight into character, asking if I was a demon. It was awesome. Lol.

Given it’s his directorial debut and afterwards he only directed one feature and one short, it’s not surprising.
I think frailty not getting the success he expected probably hit him in the confidence. When people have a short chance to talk to him and choose to bring up frailty he was probably very pleased.
Kevin smith tells a story of when he met Alan rickman on dogma.
He approaches Rickman and starts to praise him for his career talking about a movie he made that smith loved. Rickman seemed unexcited because he was expecting Smith to mention Die Hard, and when Smith instead praised his performance in “closet land” rickman seemed as shocked as he was pleased. He and Kevin formed an instant friendship that lasted until Rickman passed away.
There’s a clip on TH-cam of Kevin talking about rickmans death right after it happened and he gets really emotional.
I met Paxton in 2010 on set of Big Love. We discussed a handful of his films, but when Frailty was mentioned his eyes lit up. He went into the whole story of developing the film, finding the axe “right up the street in the back of a dingy hardware store - I saw it and knew it was the one!”. You could tell he was damn proud of the film and it’s a shame we didn’t get to see more projects directed by him. R.I.P Bill
I watched this movie with my Dad after you turned me onto it in your “plot twist” ranking video. My Dad told me he’d seen it before and it was okay and kinda boring.
I still insisted we watch it since you seemed so passionate about and my tastes tend to line up with yours. So we watched it even though he seemed very disinterested in it at first.
My Dad spent the last hour of this film with his eyes glued to the screen. Turns out he basically forgot the entire movie, so he kept trying to guess the ending. After it was over he told me that it was a really good movie and he couldn’t believe he forgotten it and then proceeded to talk about it all week. 😂

My dad had a special knack for renting movies that were hidden gems or cult classics. This was one of them.
The ending absolutely blew my mind. It’s like multiple bombshells back to back to back and it’s incredible. McConaughey and Paxton never disappoint.
McConaughey often disappoints. Dazed and confused and True detective are about it. Got by on his looks and being able to read lines.

I just watched it knowing nothing about this movie and predicted the ending pretty early on which had the ending fall flat for me. It was an ok movie, Bill Paxton is the goat.

@@CodyLeachYTI've seen Frailty holy shit that was a good film, one of the most underrated films ever, it's basically the definitive Southern US Horror Movie, Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton and Powers Boothe all were good in this, The Five Twists were fucking mind blowing, one after the other, RIP to Both Powers Boothe and Bill Paxton both of them sadly died in 2017, they're in The Marvel Cinematic Universe in Agents of SHIELD, both seemingly are SHIELD (but they're later revealed to be HYDRA), so glad I listened to Cody 😊, Boothe and Paxton are Legends in my case, This Movie showed The Untapped Potential Bill Paxton had as a director

Lmao I was the same way. I heard about this “epic plot twist” and I felt too impatient to watch a whole movie.
But because of Cody’s insistence I went and watched it and just like you, I am so glad I listened to him.
They sold this movie in a two-pack with the original Saw (2004), which I’m a massive fan of. I popped the DVD into my PS2 and I was absolutely blown away by the twist ending.

Allegedly the name "OTIS" comes from a homeless man Bill Paxton met. He offered the man money but the man refused his charity. When it came time for the film he wanted the axe to be it's own character so he named it Otis after the man.

Cody, from the bottom of my heart, when you were talking about your favorite movie from every year you have been alive, thank you, thank you, thank you for getting me to watch Frailty. It is easily one of the best horror movies of all time and an underrated classic from the 2000s. This movie is super, super effective, too.
Frailty is amazing. I bought this at HMV when I was 22, me and my brother watched this and every second of it was gripping, the lighting, cinematography, the acting; there is no mistep of continuity or intention, it's all a class act in writing, and direction.
The score is incredible and elevates the film. This is one of those pictures that i call a film, it's not a movie, it's a film. Bill Paxton, wow! I miss him being on the screen. 10/10, as perfect as a film can get.

I bought this movie because of Matthew. I had NO idea what it was and I had heard no one talk about it. It blew my MIND when I saw it the first time. I own two copies of this movie. One for me and one to lend out. When people come to me asking for horror they may not know about, this is the one I tell them about first. Its a hidden gem for sure. One of my favorite thrillers of all time.
I am religious, and I know that God loves everyone, doesn't matter who you are. From the perspective of the characters in this movie, and what happens, there is so much to unpack and interpret, one of the reasons I love it. I enjoy films like this that challenge you and your beliefs, perfectly acceptable to me.

This was also a blind rental for me and my family when it was released on video and loved it. Seeing this small family slowly break apart is crushing and it does such a good job of having you struggle throughout on who to side with until the ultimate reveal.
Paxton is able to be so chilling while also conveying that he's a loving father holding strong to his beliefs and alleged duty.
And those twists at the end are the cherry on top of this sundae. Executed perfectly to bring everything together in a tightly wrapped package. Incredibly underrated Horror Classic. Excellent review as always Cody!
This movie is one of the most underrated horror films. Bill Paxton deftly handled directing and costarring as the caring yet troubled father. Plus Matthew McConaughey and Powers Boothe carry all the present day sequences like masters & the kid actors as Fenton and Adam really come across as realistic small town kids who aren’t sure how to process their dad’s sudden rampage and those twists are quite a gut punch
I haven't watched this movie in years. But I do remember when I watched it, it blew me away. I plan on watching it again soon cuz you always talk about it. It's on the list.

LOVE this movie! I saw it at theaters in 2002 with some friends as I had the fortune of seeing the trailer and having the movie at the theater where I worked at. We all found it thought-provoking, scary and brilliant. Every time I've rewatched I found myself loving it more and more. RIP Bill Paxton and this masterpiece was his best work and performance. Everyone else is great too. It's interesting that both Bill and Powers Boothe died around the same time in 2017. RIP to Powers Boothe as well. When you watch it for the 2nd time, it feels like a prequel to Supernatural. The dad is preparing his kids to hunt demons except Dean is one of them.

I see the correlation, but you do realize Frailty pre dates Supernatural by 4 years, right? Yes, it was released in 02, but most movies are made a year prior to the release.

@ttewelow1 Well, according to imdb shooting and production started in late 2000. I don't know how accurate that is, but generally, movies are usually shot a year prior to release. Punisher 2004 was shot mostly in 03. I know because I live in Florida and they were shooting around the summer of 03, so regardless of release date, it more than likely pre dates supernatural by 4 years, and if imdb is accurate, technically 6 years. Some films take a year in half or 2 years to make before being released. So it all really depends on the size, scale and budget of the film.
@@micksawyer1112 IMDb only says that it released in 2001 because early screenings technically premiered in November, but it wasn't released widely until April of 2002

Frailty (2001) is one of the most criminally underrated Horror Movies that I've ever seen in my life & I give it a 10/10
I watched this movie because of Sean Chandler and it didn’t disappoint. While I don’t consider it to be horror, it’s a fantastic thriller dripping with suspense.
A Simple Plan with bill paxton is also HEAVILY UNDERRATED

Bill Paxson said he named the axe Otis because he wanted the axe to have its own personality because it was a character too..the name came from a homeless man he met while looking for shooting locations..he offered to give the man money but the proud man refused and bill bought his name off of him...love that movie !!!

Dude Frailty and Rudderless are two movies I’d never heard of but checked out a couple of years ago after hearing you sing their praises. Both are incredible 5 star movies for me. Brilliant! 🙏
I absolutely love Frailty. One of the best movies of the early 2Ks for me.
I will never forget watching this for the first time and being blown away. Good thing is watching this several times over the years the movie still doesn't lose its magic. I also like to expose this movie to as many people as I can so I can relive it for the first time again through somebody else's eyes.

I'm not really into deep dives, I don't understand why people want to know so much about actors or studios. I enjoy discussions about movies, of course, but about the content and philosophy. I watched Frailty and it really stuck with me. Although I suppose I never considered him "iconic" as a movie star in the way some view people like Tom Cruise or Arnold Schwhatshisname or Harrison Ford, I did like his acting and his character. When he died, I felt a hole in my heart that I couldn't explain. And, again in a way that I cannot explain, I miss him.

I checked this movie out after you included it in one of your ranking videos. The way you explained it and the excitement you had in doing so made me check it out and I gotta say it was a very good movie. Would not have watched this without your recommendation!
If a person makes it to my “inner circle” of friends, they will inevitably be sat down and made to watch this film with me. It is a cinematic masterpiece and one of my all-time favorites. I buy used copies to “lend” to people after I probably spend an uncomfortably too long period of time gushing over it. Bill Paxton’s directorial vision is beautiful. It is the whole world’s loss we won’t see more.
When it comes to OTIS, this is one story I found:
When asked why the axe used by his character has the name "OTIS" carved into the handle, Paxton stated that he wanted the axe to have its own personality and to be unique. He found the name in Pasadena when he was there scouting for locations to film. Paxton met a homeless man and offered to give him some money. The homeless man did not want charity, so Paxton instead offered to buy the use of the man's name for his movie. The homeless man's name was Otis.
Whether that’s true or not, I’m not sure.
Add this to the list of reasons why I absolutely love you and agree with you pretty much all the time lol. I have loved this movie since I was a kid and literally like you dude, I remember loving it even more because the kids from Mom’s got a date with a vampire (another absolute banger lol). This is one that not many people have ever heard about and I just don’t know why because it is such a fucking powerhouse of a film. I smile thinking about the kid that’s going to stumble on this one night late at night have no idea what it is fall in love with it and then come to TH-cam and see your review and see that there’s a whole community of people who love this movie. I have no idea why it never gets talked about. I’ve showed it to so many people and I’ve only ever had one person be mixed on it and let’s just say I looked at them differently after that hahahaha. One thing I always come back to with this is the fact that Bill Paxton show James Cameron the movie and it was James Cameron, who told him to answer what is answered in the third act. Originally it was supposed to be ambiguous, which I’m normally always down for. This is one of those rare times were answering. The interesting question posed does live up to the story. We have been following and makes viewings that much better. Seriously people, if you’ve never seen this, seek it out immediately!
My brotha! Agree 100% and I hope to be that “movie mentor” for people looking for hidden gems. Gotta love the classics that we all know but there’s something special about this movies that are like a secret a few of us share.

I remember me and a buddy got stoned and caught this one randomly in the theater. Was a nice surprise. I think we just decided to check it out because we are movie nerds and Bill Paxton was enough for us to buy tickets. Paid off.

Ive always loved this movie, but sometimes I wonder if it would have been better if the audience didn’t get the reveal that they were demons and we were always left to wonder? Or maybe there were hidden clues buried within the movie that left a definitive answer if you dove deep enough into it?

The first time I watched Frailty, I was blown away by how amazing it was. Ever since you counted it down in your top 50 horror movies and sang your praises, I watched it not too long after. I totally agree that it is an underrated film. If you want an underrated film watch Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, that movie is a perfect horror comedy. Anyway, I always enjoy your reviews.

YES! Thank You so much for this. I introduced my girlfriend at the time to Frailty, it instantly became one of her favorite movies. She has since become my Wife. We watch it at least once a year. It's great to know there are people out there who appreciate this magnificent film as much as we do.

A couple of months ago my dad threw on this movie and my eyes rolled back into my skull. Well 2 hours later I asking my dad why he never showed me this hidden gem. The following Sunday my pastor referenced the movie in one of his sermons (jokingly) kinda ironic.
I knew this movie was special the first time I saw it theaters! Blew me and my friends out of the water, it was soooooo unexpected how FANTASTIC this movie is, what a great theater experience! The ending reveals were freaky, and gleeful and had me thinking FUCK YES, THIS IS DOPE AF.

I was lucky enough to watch this movie in theaters when I was studying cinema in college. I loved it so much that even I wrote a paper about it for one of my classes!!! Now, the ONLY thing I have a criticism for is the ending: I would've preferred if they would've let it vague and let the audience make their own interpretation, depending on the clues, their own beliefs, etc. I thought it was a shame to give a definite answer, especially with its subject matter of faith vs science.

Way back in the day one of the local video rental stores was closing and they were having a sale on all of their VHS tapes. We bought a whole crapload of movies and this was one that we bought on a whim and we were amazed at what a great movie it was even though we had never heard of it.
Same here. My VHS collection tripled due to our local video store closing down. And DVD for that matter.

Allegedly the story behind Otis is that Bill Paxton had met a homeless guy while making the movie and tries to give him some money, the dude was really proud and didn't want to take handouts so Bill Paxton said " ok well do you have something to sell?" Dude sold him "-Otis" and Paxton named him after the dude.and put it in the movie ❤

I watched Frailty around 2010. All I knew about it was that Bill Paxton directed the film and that anyone who mentioned Frailty loved the film. I was reluctant to watch the film because I thought it was yet another film by an actor turned director. When I did finally watch Frailty I was blown away with the reality of what is actually going on. What a screenplay. I immediately brought the Blu Ray and the CD of the film score.
I was born in 83 and watching movies growing up we rarely saw a trailer. Every movie was a complete surprise. Seems like I know half of every movie I watch these days.

Me and my wife found out about this movie thru your channel. Great movie with great twist and reveals. One question we have is when Adam came for Fenton. Was Fenton going around killing or was he following his brother Trying to find him. We may have missed something need to rewatch. Really enjoy the channel.
