John Piper looks so incredibly nerdy here, the absolute opposite of what you would expect someone preaching to youth to look like. But the teens in the audience are spellbound.
I think John Piper is the greatest theologian of our time. His ministry has helped me beyond description. He's a gifted expository preacher, a very anointed man of God. Like others here have said, anyone who claims he is a false teacher lacks discernment, Bible knowledge, and possibly even the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit bears witness to my spirit regarding truth and John Piper speaks the truth. Period. Any preacher who claims John Piper is a false teacher is likely jealous of him. The complainers should be wary, God does not take kindly to those who disparage His anointed teachers.
It shows that you do not understand any if his theology, calvinism at its core does not believe any of the message he's preaching, everything is determined, none of it matters. You're either determined to follow Christ, chosen before the foundation of the earth to be saved and for every single act you'll do. Whether you serve God as a missionary OR if you're the couple collecting shells, it was ALL predestined by God, John Piper admits this, Pipers words are meaningless, doesn't matter, it's all determined by God. Those who truly follow Christ always are painted to be boring or liars and pushed to the back. I support Mr. Piper. He spiritually feeds me when I just need to find something in between being in my Bible to keep the word going in my mind and spirit during the day. I thank God for him and my parents walk in Christ. They gave me the best start in life anyone could give a child.. A foundation on eternity in God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

I remember this event. I wish I'd made it there. I bought the DVD and it's one of the best event compilations I still have on disc. Worship and messages - perfect mix. I can't speak on the whole of this man's theology, as I have never listened to any of his sermons before today, but I can say that the bit about the shell collection is soul crushing. the way he's able to squeeze palpable emotion out of his voice is astounding.

I liked his message until he started taking about the Florida couple. It was a reader’s digest article, so maybe we don’t know everything about that couple. Maybe they shared Jesus with beach goers while collecting their shells. He made it seem like there’s only one way to serve Jesus, serving sick and poor in 3rd world countries. That’s one of the ways to serve Jesus, but there’s a million other ways to Know Jesus and make Him known.
You could be ministering to people caught up in trivialities but they are still trivialities and you will have to give an account one day of how you invested your resources God gave you like the story of the talents.

Did Piper ever apologize for calling out these two people or the way he so blatantly threw them under the buss and everyone laughed at them? So emotional yet I would guess he doesn’t see how terrible it was to call them out. I guess when you are so special you can do things like that under the anointing. I reacted to the sea shell story negatively and didn’t even know who originally said it. Now I see why. I’m not sure why these men are on pedestals above everyone else. John? Here’s my problem. I’m getting up in age and feeling quite feeble. My wife, on the other hand, is going full-bore. I have always driven old cars. Cars that break down with unfortunate (but understandable) frequency. I always either fix them myself, or take them in. Question: if I were to buy my wife a new car on the assumption that she will outlive me just how much of a sin would that be? I don’t want her to have to worry about break-downs, you know? I know you have said that buying a new car is a sin, yet how am I to go to my grave in peace thinking about my wife being stranded somewhere? You also say that sin will keep us from heaven (that free grace only gets “God on our side” but from then on out it is a matter of works). So if I were to buy the cheapest new car I could find, would that exclude me from Heavenly glory? Or should I keep my old car (which is currently broken down) on the hope that in doing so God will allow me admittance to His Kingdom? In addition, I own a 900 sq ft house that I fear is a nod to the American dream (even though I’m next door to a bunch of Nicaraguan migrants). How will this figure into my prospects come judgement day? Also, will God hold it against me if I have a nice family if I do NOT collect seashells?

I liked his message until he started taking about the Florida couple. It was a reader’s digest article, so maybe we don’t know everything about that couple. Maybe they shared Jesus with beach goers while collecting their shells. He made it seem like there’s only one way to serve Jesus, serving sick and poor in 3rd world countries. That’s one of the ways to serve Jesus, but there’s a million other ways to Know Jesus and make Him known.
You could be ministering to people caught up in trivialities but they are still trivialities and you will have to give an account one day of how you invested your resources God gave you like the story of the talents.

This message makes sense if you aren't a calvinist. They couldn't do anything other than collect shells, under calvinism. Could they choose repentance without being elect?

John? Here’s my problem. I’m getting up in age and feeling quite feeble. My wife, on the other hand, is going full-bore. I have always driven old cars. Cars that break down with unfortunate (but understandable) frequency. I always either fix them myself, or take them in. Question: if I were to buy my wife a new car on the assumption that she will outlive me just how much of a sin would that be? I don’t want her to have to worry about break-downs, you know? I know you have said that buying a new car is a sin, yet how am I to go to my grave in peace thinking about my wife being stranded somewhere? You also say that sin will keep us from heaven (that free grace only gets “God on our side” but from then on out it is a matter of works). So if I were to buy the cheapest new car I could find, would that exclude me from Heavenly glory? Or should I keep my old car (which is currently broken down) on the hope that in doing so God will allow me admittance to His Kingdom? In addition, I own a 900 sq ft house that I fear is a nod to the American dream (even though I’m next door to a bunch of Nicaraguan migrants). How will this figure into my prospects come judgement day? Also, will God hold it against me if I have a nice family if I do NOT collect seashells?
