The funny thing about Ken Griffey Jr. Presents MLB is that all the real players ARE there in the game - just without their real names. Super Baseball 2020 was a personal favorite of mine when I was a kid. It really should have gotten more fanfare with how good it was. Hidden gem for the Genesis and SNES.
I assume the look is every bit as good on the neo geo but does it have the rpg elements being an arcade game? I wouldnt think so and thats really sad as that was pretty unique along w the presentation. But nothing lost if the graphics and everything else is the same as the neo geo ver.
So happy to see Extra Innings get some recognition! We played this like crazy back in the day, and it's a very balanced game with scores that stay realistic as you get better at it. Loved the fictional rosters of scientists, poets, architects, game executives, and even magazine editors. The original was a licensed Japanese game with real players, and it got two sequels that were never translated. So much fun!
Super Baseball Simulator 1.000 is my favorite. I have played countless seasons in this game. The editing capabilites make it really fun. I love how it keeps accurate track of my hitters batting averages, HR's, doubles, triples, etc. It's really fun to build your own team in this game if you haven't played it.
Winning Run has a fun/addictive season mode, where you trade players to improve your team. This gave me Baseball Stars vibes and one of the few baseball games I completed a season with! Looking forward to your ranking of Genesis baseball games!
I'll get Genesis baseball on the list for when the playoffs come around! Thanks so much for watching, and I'll head back and check out Winning Run's season mode!
I actually really like Super Batter Up. The thing is, it plays exactly like RBI Baseball. I think they just ported that to the SNES, that's why the runners and such act like they do.
Yeah I always said it’s RBI in 16 bit w 1991 rosters gameplay/physics are great Super batter up is the best baseball game of the 16 Bit era either console

Definitely better than the football game it shares a cart with.
I completely agree with about Ken Griffey, Jr. Presents Major League Baseball. The engine on that, the motion, the hitting are all very good. I remember spending hours playing the home run derby.
At 44 years old I still play Super Baseball Simulator 1.000. I would play the NES version still but I don’t have a way to. Awesome fun games especially with a friend.
I played super baseball simulator 1.000 and I remember creating teams like the A’s, Marlins, Expos, Tigers, Braves, etc and I did all the features. This was my go to game as a kid. Super RBI was another one that I enjoyed renting too
Any snes kid growing up in the 90s knew that the coolest baseball player was Ken Griffey Jr. And the coolest/greatest baseball game was Ken Griffey Jrs 1st game. Along with Super Baseball 2020 and Cal Ripken, the amount of time i spent playing those 3 games as a kid, is just outrageous... And looking back now, pretty 😔 sad as well!
Super baseball 2020 was one of my favorite baseball games on the SNES followed by, surprisingly, baseball simulator 1000. The power-ups in that game are fun and wacky.
Sure! I'd have to drill down to a specific sport I think, just because of how many there would be if I just did 'sports' but that's completely doable. :)
GREAT Video!! Extra Innings was the first baseball game I owned on SNES, spent a lot of time with it and liked it. I really enjoyed Hardball 3, felt like a simulation to me. I think I'm one of the only people who didn't love Ken Griffey, and yet I remember enjoying Roger Clemens MVP, hahahahaha. I know, doesn't make any sense. I was also a big Red Sox fan back then. Ellis Burks is my favorite player of all time. Mike Greenwell was awesome too. Never got around to trying out Super RBI.
Mike Greenwell owned a mini-golf, batting cage, arcade, and go-kart track near where I lived in Florida! Gator was one of my favorites - but Ellis Burks was top 3 for me growing up! You have excellent taste in Red Sox players! :D
Bases loaded 2 on the NES was my favourite baseball game for a long time. Now I would have to say it’s Super Mega Baseball 2 on PS4/ Xbox. The 2 player co-op mode is fantastic. I never had a SNES when I was a kid so I need to try some of these games now. Awesome video, people don’t talk enough about sports games on TH-cam. Cheers 🍻
I played plenty of Baseball games from the Atari 2600 to the PS2 Era. I grew up in Seattle and went to 3 or 4 games every year. I watch Griffen hit a home run in his 7th straight game. Yet I have never played Ken Griffey Jr baseball. Very odd....I did love Baseball Simulator 2000 though
I used to like MLBPA a lot when I was a kid. It wasn’t my favorite though, but I think it’s way better than a F. I don’t remember any of the fielding problems you were having like the glitched out outfielders. I think you probably had a bad copy of the game or it needed resetting. You probably would had gave it a better grade if those problems wasn’t happening. I really liked your video.
I also agree with you as well. I think he had a glitched game too. I have a copy and thats the baseball game I play the most on my snes. Its like the best fully licensed mlb and mlpa game. Definitely at least a B.
@matthewrobb186 Yup, it was a mess of a cartridge. Haven't had a chance to go back and try a new one yet, but my cart looked like it had been through a war when I took it apart.
Great review. I’d give ESPN Baseball Tonight a little credit for having Chris Bergman’s “Back, back, back Gone!!” whenever there’s a HR. Dan Patrick’s play by play is funny too with him saying “the whiff” whenever there’s a strikeout. But yes not a good game graphics wise.
Sports illustrated had a football/ baseball combo game which we played to death. Then we got KenGriffey. The first was a life changer, the other was a game changer. The graphics on Griffey blew us away. It looked like real life. Then we got an n64 and the first game we got was Mike Piazza strike zone. We thought THATwas the greatest ever... little did I know. Playing mlb the show 23 makes every other baseball game look like 🦗
Thought Super Baseball 2020 was so great, I chose it as my first Super Nintendo game when my parents bought me a console. Love that game and a definite underrated game on the system.
Great video covering every SNES baseball game! Definitely some here that I need to try like Super Baseball 2020! Also, I legit spit out my coffee laughing at the randomly appearing “kaiju” players for the EA Baseball game 😂. Excellent topic!!
The second I saw the players embiggen, I paused the game and stopped playing for a minute, convinced I was seeing things. It's SO bad. Absolutely atrocious. And YES on Super Baseball 2020! Legitimately an incredible gameplay experience - but what do you expect from SNK? :)
Unfortunately I owned Roger Clemens Baseball. The only cool feature was sliding where you had to avoid tags. Other than that it was pretty poor. Great video!
TECMO baseball is the best baseball video game by far....with the center field camera...the music...the player picture...the contact ,normal and power batting mode was ahead of it's time,no other game had it
Great video! My first SNES baseball game was Cal Ripken Jr Baseball, it was a disappointment. My preference was Ken Griffey Jr, that was great, and a lot of fun
What partially drives me a little batty, due to my thing of wanting perfection, there are technically 21 baseball playable games on snes. I say technically cause the game sports illustrated baseball and football has both sports titles but as little as some titles have , I’d give it a D or F but it should be ranked :-) the baseball nerd in me has so much to comment on . I think it’s why I was a sega person cause World Series did a lot of things right. The Ken Griffey games are definitely a blast to play though. I don’t blame games for not having full seasons until the Saturn /ps1 / n64 era of gaming where they had hard drives or memory cards to store stats outside the cart itself.
You should really try to find a relief pitcher arcade cabinet I think you would be pleasantly surprised at how different and more fun it is than the SNES version.
I'll do that! I'm at the Midwest Gaming Classic in a few weeks, and their acade hall is always massive - I'll see if there's one there! Otherwise I've got a local arcade here I can check out that always has a great variety of machines. :)
I enjoyed Hardball III. Played it on PC than on the SNES back in the day. I still have it for a game here and there every year or three. It's a relaxing baseball game to me. I had my Tecmo Super Baseball trip as well and played a whole season. Not relaxing. I got it to in my collection and play it as Hardball III more or less.
Loved the video! I agree with all of these with one glaring exemption… Tecmo is my all time favorite baseball game. I thought you were about to bring up the home run music for the game. I’m surprised at the D grade but I enjoy hearing another opinion.
The thing about ranking videos is that it could decidedly be a case of the day I played it being a bad day and it not jiving with me. I'm glad to revisit games like Tecmo Baseball in future videos! :)
@@SquarePegs for sure! I recently decided to start collecting all of the baseball games for the SNES. One last speaking point for the Tecmo game. You could change the hitting and pitching view by pressing the select button. I just found this game at a store for $8 and was overjoyed. The game I had growing up didn’t save any progress and I never knew what it was like to complete a 162 game season. It has the greatest players from my childhood and I can’t wait to mash 100 homers with Bonds. One of the only games in existence to have my childhood favorite player. Again thanks for the insight in your video. It deserves way more views and I’m going to hit that subscribe button now. Best of luck and keep up the great content.
These were interesting to check out cause I was a Genesis guy, didnt get a SNES till like 2000 of my own, although my best friend had one and let me borrow it from time to time... it was always to play Mario Kart and all the Mario World games, and All Stars. The problem here is, World Series Baseball were the main baseball games then. THEY WERE SEGA SPORTS. And up until the 2K baseball series died, that series (which was later named 2K with Dreamcast) was king! EA Sports never really hit the mark sadly. Triple Play was OK but, meh. So SNES was NOT the place to go for baseball games but it does have some good ones now that I look back! Gotta try the Griffey one when I got the time! he 1 game I wanted to see was Super Baseball 2020. I of course grew up with it on Genesis, and it was always an insanely fun game due to the powerups and the 'rpg' like mechanics of doing special moves to get extra money, to power up further, managing who gets what powerup when, and when to use all your pitchers etc. The problem is, as an adult, it's easier to see every way to exploit the AI in the game, and boy is it easy. There's been times I tested how far I could go, and ended up with over 100 runs in a game lol. But that's only after like 1000 hours lifetime on it in the last 30 years. So I was like man, if this isn't an S I'll cry, even though the SNES version has worse sounds, the colors look better, and it's actually harder than the Genesis version I've found (so it might be better even though Nostalgia makes me think otherwise)
@@SquarePegs I left ya a comment after I tried the SNES version again, and I was surprised how bad it was. If you think that was good,,, oh man, if you havent played the Sega one yet, you're in for some fun. I don't know what happened here, I think maybe they made it for SNES, and then ported it to Genesis and fixed the bugs and hitbox issues and gameplay issues. Its night and day! Its the same game, they just improved and fixed everything imaginable.
Loved Extra Innings and Super Batter Up.. I always found the Bases Loaded series hit and miss. I liked the first Griffey baseball but at the same time, I didn't like how you couldn't hit a HR lefthanded.. Or steal... I think Tecmo Super Baseball would mess with my head if played for too long. I remember playing Hardball on the SNES. I'd make the logos correct and play a season.. Always had difficulty if I saved a game and went back to it.. First batter no matter what would homer when you returned to it.. SO first batter after a loaded save always got drilled...
I never took a side in the console wars, all that bit and blast processing crap was just marketing to me, all I cared about was the games. Anyway, Ken Griffey Jr was GOATed, I loved it when you struck out and the batter would break the bat over his knee and go "COME ON!!!"
Remember playing ESPN baseball tonight at...Believe SEARS when the game first debuted. I loved the home run derby...everything else was a dud extra innings surprised me...i thought it was "kiddy baseball" but it was playable. I remember liking hardball 4 on the pc. got some miles out of that one wasnt that Jack Buck for relief pitcher?
@@SquarePegs I can't stand Joe Buck either. He thinks he's some sort of deadpan funny guy when doing games - I grew up listening to Bob Murphy and Gary Cohen doing the Mets and to me they were always the gold standard
You were completely right to put Super Baseball 2020 that high!! It’s a BLAST to play against a human player 2 as well, if you can convince one of your friends to git gud and learn the controls! (Pro Tip: if someone has 50 home runs, but a low batting average, ignore the average-that player is a beast. Give them the big batting upgrade and they’ll hit some ridiculous shots!)
Jack Buck, not his son Joe, is the announcer in Relief Pitcher. Also imho if any sports game is going to get either a league license or a players license, GET THE PLAYERS LICENSE! 😊
Super Bases Loaded was the most fun game to me. It’s all about hitting a single and getting in pickles until you score and running up the score. Beat the team in a mercy rule. Easy and fun. If you know what I’m talking about you’re smiling ear to ear. If not, can’t help you out. Boston Buzzards all day baby!
Appreciate your commentary for these ranked vids. I saw you had SNES baseball, and all i wanted to know was your thoughts on one game, and i bet... you know that game is a fav of many, because its the only game you threw a precursor/warning in. Super Bases Loaded is in my top 15-25 SNES games. The view was def not a fav of. I also, did not play the NES games, avoided them actually. Side: Didn't like 2 or 3, at all. Loved when 3 went back to the pitch view. I am younger, and I am sure that plays a factor. I've REPLAYED a few of those games within the last 10yrs, they dont have the same feel as they did when i played in the time they were in... SBL fun factor still reigns for me. Again, gameplay. At that age, didnt care about seasons/etc etc. It was couch vs and bragging rights lol But what I will say, Super Bases Loaded was my ABSOLUTE fav on field gameplay, pitching/etc. Everything for that time, and my older bros and I still throw it on once in a blue. RBI baseball didnt translate over to the SNES for us, those NES games are legendary, the SNES might be for others, but we made the switch. I didnt see your SEGA GEN one, but i look fwd to hearing about WORLD SERIES BASEBALL thoughts lol. IMO - best of the SNES / GEN era.
I grew up with Cal Ripken Jr Baseball and loved it. The AI is difficult and it's a little slow paced, but I'm surprised the game is generally poorly received, by both you and others elsewhere.
The important thing to remember is it's all opinion here. Just because it didn't click for me doesn't mean it wasn't a great memory for you. The one thing I've learned from my ranking videos is what my friend John says - every game is someone's favorite. I'm glad you enjoy it, and I thank you for watching the video!
Nice to hear another Red Sox fan from the Boggs, Clemens, Greenwell days. I was done with Clemens though when he left for Toronto, but then when he joined the Yankees I was somehow even more done with him.
I still don't know which one it was I played as a kid.. one of the first two shown I think? Was a sound byte the commentator would say over and over - went like "the whiff!" loads. Hmm
Hmm...I'll go back and take a look at the footage and see if I can figure it out! I've got the audio turned down too far on this video, but if I can figure it out, I'll let you know!
Best gameplay is Griffey. It moved quickly and controls were very responsive. If only they had licenses for players and teams I would’ve been a perfect game
@@SquarePegs Haha....he deserved a game as good as Griffey. Looks like the only day Cal took off was the day to review the game before signing off on it 😒
Hardball was the gold standard! Nothing beat real players, real teams. Only thing it could have done better was real pitching wind ups and real batting stances.
That's a shallow list compared to other consoles. Notuch experience with SNES but Big Hurt was a good time on the Genesis. Try clutch time mode. Also there's a few here I want to try now. Thanks for posting.
I'll check it out, definitely! And it's not as shallow as you might think - same number of games on the SNES as the Genesis, which surprised me, because I thought the Genesis was just dripping in baseball games!
@@SoulforSale Thanks for replying! I still don't understand the necessity of sequels. Did you want yearly updates to your favorite game? As for EA's baseball games: the first couple of them for the Genesis (La Russa and MLBPA) were nothing to write home about. Triple Play was released late and I thought the gameplay to be mechanical. Did you like those games?
@@madspunky La Russia 95 was excellent. The sequels in the 90's weren't the same as the watered down title from today. Usually a sequel included innovations not just roster updates like we see today. Not everything was licenced soup to nuts either so different games offered different forms of immersion.
Great video. I want to mention that Griffey has real players, with real statistics from the 1993 season. That’s why, for instance, Deion Sanders is ‘D. Neon’ and Fred McGriff is ‘D. Crime.’ Also, that’s Jack Buck, not Joe, as the commentator in Relief Pitcher.
I played MLBPA on SNES a lot as a kid (almost completed a whole 162 game season), and it never had that player size popping issue. Were you playing it on an emulator?
Hi Square Pegs, I really enjoyed your video and I definitely agree with your rank opinions, but I just want to let you know that you forgot to include Sports Illustrated: Championship Football & Baseball which is a another Baseball game for SNES. What's the rank for the Sports Illustrated: Championship Football & Baseball game? I'm just curious about this game. See You later.
Winning Run was the first baseball game I ever played. So I guess because of that, it holds a higher place in my heart than a C. No, it's not a terrific game, and Ken Griffey Jr Presents MLB is better. But man... Winning Run is still good with me.
It's crazy that the nes had far superior baseball games then the super nes.baseball stars (prolly greatest baseball game of the 90s) rbi baseball n tecmo was solid
KGJ MLB & WR is a premium double feature combo. Otherwise, so many letdowns after NES goodness - Super Batter Up, RBI, MLBPA, Big Hurt... I tried & they failed, esp when baseball should be a simple formula to ace.
The funny thing about Ken Griffey Jr. Presents MLB is that all the real players ARE there in the game - just without their real names. When I was a kid, I actually went through every team's roster, matched every player's stats with those of the real life players, and changed the name of every single player to the real name before starting a full season. Ken Griffey Jr presents MLB is one of my favorite memories. My dad LOVED that game, we probably did 100 world series together, such great times.

The theme song for Ken Griffey Jr winning run, makes it an A. I used to love making the umpire knock on the screen lol

I'm not much for baseball, but played me a bunch of Ken Griffey MLB and Super Baseball Simulator 1.000. We need a new Baseball Sim 1.000

Nothing wrong with that! Everyone has different tastes, and I loved the fielding in the game!
Happy to find someone else that remembers Super Baseball Simulator 1,000 as fondly as I do.

Cheers 🍻
I have to check out Super Mega Baseball 2 - your guys made that look so fun, and that's exactly the type of game I want to play.
I agree. Your game is glitched completely. Camera changes when fielding. Not the best baseball game, but it was tons of fun.
@@SquarePegs should give it a revisit. Would like to know where you would rank it after that. Again, not the best game but it was fun indeed. Cheers.
I played Super Baseball 2020 on Genesis a lot. I kept going back to it. It's just a fun game.
Playing mlb the show 23 makes every other baseball game look like 🦗
I had the sports illustrated game. It sucked. I loved it lol
I think some of the D's should have been C's but the S tier is spot on!
On another day, they might have been C's, but when I recorded, that's where they fell. :)
14:48 They nailed Dennis Martinez Windup at least
Interesting glitches you had in EA's baseball game. I played that game like crazy and never had any issues
The funniest thing is that in Frank Thomas Baseball, The announcer sounds like the coach from Grease.
Ken Griffey, Jr.'s Winning Run was my favorite baseball game as a kid...just wish it had the MLBPA license.
I absolute love your ranking videos! I remember several of these games! Awesome job!
Thank you so much, my friend!
Unfortunately I owned Roger Clemens Baseball. The only cool feature was sliding where you had to avoid tags. Other than that it was pretty poor. Great video!
Thanks so much!
TECMO baseball is the best baseball video game by far....with the center field camera...the music...the player picture...the contact ,normal and power batting mode was ahead of it's time,no other game had it
I love your sports content been a fan for awhile. Keep doing it man you are killing it
Thank you, Joe! More sports content coming in the new year. :)
Nothing will ever beat Bases Loaded on the NES.
Not my favorite, but I can totally get why it would be someones choice!
You forgot Sports Illustrated: Championship Football and Baseball
Sure did! Looking at it, though, reviews imply I didn't miss much.
I had the game. It sucked. I loved it 😆
You should really try to find a relief pitcher arcade cabinet I think you would be pleasantly surprised at how different and more fun it is than the SNES version.
I'll do that! I'm at the Midwest Gaming Classic in a few weeks, and their acade hall is always massive - I'll see if there's one there! Otherwise I've got a local arcade here I can check out that always has a great variety of machines. :)
Dude, I love ur channel. Second video, and your voice and presentation is spot on.
Thank you very much! I really appreciate that.
Thanks so much for these quick reviews. Saves me a lot of time to pick a few really good ones. I am Dutch so I know jack s*it about Baseball.
You're most welcome, Randy! Thanks for checking it out! :)
Super Batter Up is basically a western ver of Famista.
I might be wrong, but it looks like Super Batter Up is a re-skin of RBI Baseball on NES, even down to being done by Namco.
And thank you for watching! I really appreciate your time.
I was legitimately shocked at Super Baseball 2020. It's so damn good! Such a fun experience. :)
KGJ baseball had editable rosters as well too OP
Good point! Thanks for mentioning that, it's appreciated. :)
I wish theyd make more fun baseball game like 2020 baseball
This is insane… love ur energy.. keep it up bro 👍🏻👍🏻
Much appreciated! Thanks so much for watching!
Remember playing ESPN baseball tonight at...Believe SEARS when the game first debuted. I loved the home run derby...everything else was a dud
extra innings surprised me...i thought it was "kiddy baseball" but it was playable.
I remember liking hardball 4 on the pc. got some miles out of that one
wasnt that Jack Buck for relief pitcher?
It was Jack. My loathing of his child blinded me.
I have such personal animosity towards Joe Buck, that I was blinded. 🤣
I never understood why ken Griffey Jr winning run had a different developer they could have really built on the original game and made something great
Bases loaded was a NES game. It looks the same on the SNES.
Yup. It's a waste of time. The laserdisc ad is legitimately the best part of the game.
It was couch vs and bragging rights lol
But what I will say, Super Bases Loaded was my ABSOLUTE fav on field gameplay, pitching/etc.
@@SquarePegs that would be awesome sir
@@SuperJim That was ESPN Baseball Tonight. I remember that sound bite vividly haha 😅
Ken Griffey Jr presents MLB is the GOAT
Amen.
Best gameplay is Griffey. It moved quickly and controls were very responsive. If only they had licenses for players and teams I would’ve been a perfect game
Awesome video my friend with some solid titles and some not so great haha
Some absolute quality and garbage to be sure! :D
Frank Thomas Hurt Baseball! To this day one of my favorite sports gamea
Cal Ripken...definitely wish I had rented it first 😂😂😂
The Iron Man deserved better! 🤣
@@SquarePegs Haha....he deserved a game as good as Griffey. Looks like the only day Cal took off was the day to review the game before signing off on it 😒
Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball is the best baseball game ever made hands down.
What kind of baseball games did other consoles have that the SNES was lacking in?
@@madspunky quite a few sequels. And a bunch of electronic arts games
I am permanently blinded by my hatred of Joe Buck. His father didn't deserve that. :D
@@SquarePegs 😂 Fair enough.
I played MLBPA on SNES a lot as a kid (almost completed a whole 162 game season), and it never had that player size popping issue. Were you playing it on an emulator?
Bugged cartridge, apparently.
I was starting to question my own memory. I had to pull up some other videos of MLBPA on SNES gameplay to make sure I wasn’t crazy.
Thanks for the video btw. Love the nostalgia even though my favorite game got an unfair representation and grade haha
My Two favorite SNES Baseball Games were your S teir. Look at that lol
Great minds!
man you're crazy. techmo super baseball was great. the 3rd fielding was fun
In this video, it took SNESdrunk exactly six minutes and seven seco.....oh, wait, wrong door, sorry!
It's crazy that the nes had far superior baseball games then the super nes.baseball stars (prolly greatest baseball game of the 90s) rbi baseball n tecmo was solid
My other favorite is baseball simulator 1000. ❤
You have excellent taste in baseball games. 😁
KGJ MLB & WR is a premium double feature combo. Otherwise, so many letdowns after NES goodness - Super Batter Up, RBI, MLBPA, Big Hurt... I tried & they failed, esp when baseball should be a simple formula to ace.
Whys it missin the game with animated characters cartoon. Wit cut scenes
Do a video on the best games from LJN if there are any good games from LJN
