    Hello Tony. I started photography about a year ago from a TH-cam channel that are started. Unfortunately, I started the channel prematurely without understanding photography and even the basic of settings. So over the last 10 months after work every day I'll come home and study for 6 hours usually every day of the week. Whether it's reading books or watching tutorial videos. I've now upgraded to a full frame camera which is the Canon EOS R from the Canon 80d. I did keep my 80D and crop sensor lenses for a backup. But I went out and bought all L series F 2.8 glass across the board. I've got a phenomenal set up! I also built a home studio with three strobes. And then I have a battery powered strobe to take with me in case I have to do photoshoots outside somewhere. I really went above and beyond trying to get really good equipment. I also have work very very hard to learn everything I can about photography and the art that lies with it. I came across your channel this morning and absolutely love it!! If I had found this channel sooner I would have learned numerous things a lot faster! I'm at the point now where I'm shooting family and friends and my portraits are coming out amazing! I mean pro level!! The thing is with so much time and money invested, I struggle to find work! Now I come from a business background as well. And I understand photography even though it's an art to Us photographers..it is also a business. I actually have 20 years of managing businesses from restaurants to grocery stores. So I understand the logistics of how a business works. I guess I'm having trouble merging the two together and actually Landing the jobs. I have business cards that I constantly hand out the people and send them directly to my Instagram page that shows off my work and people are impressed. It's just most of the time they don't want to spend the money. so I find myself trying to do photoshoots for 50 to $100 here or there. Which I feel like it's a waste of time and energy on one hand. But on the other hand it's good to get more experience under your belt and also have work to show in your portfolio. That stuff is priceless. About the only thing that I haven't invested in yet we're starting a full website. But at this point not Landing jobs I don't want to pay the monthly fees of having a website when I can show off my work with a designated Facebook page for my photography business. And also Instagram for that matter. A lot of times when I'm meeting people face-to-face and I show them my work they're very impressed. I'm just having a hard time. I don't know if it's the area that I live in because I live in a smaller-sized country town outside of Charlotte and people just don't want to spend the money. So maybe I should get into another field of photography. Ask for tographer I'm understanding that we're supposed to specialize in a few different fields. Mine is definitely portraits, animals, and landscapes. But I was told don't mix all three and to one business either. So it gets a little confusing. Then a lot of people say just do product photography. But where does one start with that? Also I'd rather shoot people not products. But whatever pays the bills is what I need to be doing. That's just the issue. I don't know where to start and where to focus my time and money for the next step. So now I'm stuck at the stand still while I have all this knowledge and grade equipment but nowhere to shine!! Do you have any input at all? I'm sorry I wrote such a long book. But I was just trying to explain where I'm at and probably where a lot of people are.

      Wow thanks for sharing your story. You def have a pro setup now! By the way, I made TONS of money with even the 80D. Both cameras are truly great cameras. As far as how to make money, maybe I should make a video on that sometime. I think the biggest thing is smit takes time. If you’ve only been doing this a year, you may just need to wait it out a little longer. I do think a website is a worthwhile investment. I think it’s around $150/year for me total. I think it legitimatizes your “company” to the world along with giving you a platform to show off your best of your best. The way if found to get business is to just do work for free. Do a family portrait for a friend and ask them to pump you up on Facebook. You can also use their session as promotional content but typically I’ve found word of mouth is the key. If you can get your clients to drop your name for weddings, family portraits, business shots... eventually the ball will start rolling and you’ll be raising your prices because you have too many inquires. Keep your head up for now and just keep doing what you are doing. If you are trying to make a living off of photography, you may need to team up with a larger company for contract work. Or even as a second shooter to get more experience and make more networking connections. Just a few thoughts.

    I’m a believer already. I think it does great for what it was designed for. Cheap, light, directional. It has a reasonable sensitivity even on an 80D with the so, so preamps, which is what I often use other than a C100. Great advice and I’d actually never considered booming with this little guy! If I’m being finicky (or have a client) I’ll probably use an MKH-50/Sound Devices Mix Pre and all the complexity that comes with that. But you’ve proved again, it’s not the equipment but what you do with it. Thanks.

    • @TonyMellinger
      @TonyMellinger  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      kipling1957 👍🏼 I’m a huge fan of the c100 mark ii. I find it more useful than the c200 for most quick run and gun type shooting. And what an image! I’ve been thinking of picking up a mix pre. Hard to beat the quality for the price point!

    • @kipling1957
      @kipling1957 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tony Mellinger Yes-I bought the C100 Mk-2 about 3 or so years ago as my first serious video camera. It is such a user friendly tool, you can control everything and, as you say, has a fabulous image. I only got the 80D last year as I craved a second camera for things like interviews. Plus I can use the same glass. Since I got it I realized it’s a great camera in its own right, especially when you need something lightweight and unobtrusive. I have the Mix Pre D, which came out before the Mix Pre 3 and 6. Great sound and built like a tank, but a little on the heavy side for hand-held. I might jump for the Mix Pre 3 if I was looking for a quality preamp today. Great channel BTW...keep up the good work and good luck!

    • @kipling1957
      @kipling1957 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      PS: regarding the C200. For my level of work it would seem to be a near perfect video camera-I just wish they had put in better lower bitrate and in-between codecs. You don’t always need ProRes Raw.

    • @TonyMellinger
      @TonyMellinger  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      kipling1957 I agree with you. Very seldom do we’d shoot in RAW lite. It’s nice to have it but don’t need it too much.

    Great video! I have been using the Rode VideoMicro on my camera great, until I tried to see whether it would work if i plugged it into my laptop for a zoom call. It now won't work when plugged back into my camera. Is it not supposed to be plugged into a computer at all? Could I have damaged the mic as a result?

    • @TonyMellinger

    • @TonyMellinger
      @TonyMellinger  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Matt Howard not necessarily. The 80D has a ton of great features I’ve the SL2 but I’m guessing the sound quality in both are about the same. If you want to bump up, you’d need to record externally to an H4N pro or something and then sync your audio in post. Even when I do that I hardly notice the difference in quality. The advantage is multiple channels though.

    What's the in camera audio setting you used bud? Mine has an annoying white noise I use the 80D and the Movo mic

    • @TonyMellinger
      @TonyMellinger  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe when i recorded this video I was in auto leveling. Most of the time with white noise, the preamp gain is too high so if you leave it on auto level, you need to move the mic closer to the subject or the subject needs to be louder. The other option is to just put the mic level in the camera settings really low and then in post production raise the level of your audio and the noise should be less. this takes some playing around with to see how low you can get the mic settings before it doesn’t sound good boosting the volume in post production. Hopefully that helps. Keep me posted!

      Tony Mellinger Thanks For the reply yeah I’ve been working on these voiceovers for a couple weeks. I had a couple parts I wanted to punch in, but when I did, they sounded different. Every time I punch in, it sounds different. So I try to keep things consistent, like I know the microphone is sitting on this box that is arms length away. And now I’m trying to keep consistent as far as how far away my face is. But how come it doesn’t seem like other people have all of these issues? Now I point to my face and you can hear some lip smacking or s sounds whatever.
      So I’m thinking OK I will record it in my living room where I did my other video. And the echo is atrocious. I’m thinking well I can be consistent if I leave it on a table and I sit in a chair so everything is always the same. But the acoustics in that room are awful. What I have been doing is putting the blanket over me and the microphone and doing my lines. It’s absurd how many takes I have done. Final Cut isn’t even very happy with how many takes I have in my timeline because I’m trying to compare all of them and see what feels better. It’s like I can never get it right. I’m thinking of figuring it out, and then just doing all of the lines all together. Even though I really like a lot of these.
      It seems like the best acoustics is under the covers, but the problem with that is I think it’s a bed so it’s not just flat on a surface where it can be consistent. It’s almost like I need to build a sound booth. But how come other people don’t have to do that? Maybe I need to just buy something off Amazon a huge sheet I can put behind me on a pole whenever I record. I really can’t figure this out.
      For camera I’m using the iPhone 11 Pro. Once I liked a file, I paid more attention to it and realized it almost has a watery compressed sound to part of it. I feel like now that I have spent as much time on it, I might as well try to get it exactly right instead of having a part that will bug me forever when I watch it. However I need to just kind of move on. But. I don’t think I would be happy with different parts of the video sounding different. I try to use EQ to change it but that doesn’t work.
      On top of that, I try to add effects that people say to use and it sounds cool at first but then I listen to it and it just sounds like there is some distortion to it.
      All of this is such a mess and it’s making me so behind. I recorded this video in December. I have put over 100 hours of editing into this. I’m trying to remind myself a lot of that is me learning the program and getting better so it’s not a lost cause but still this VoiceOver has just dragged on for way too long.

    • @TonyMellinger
      @TonyMellinger  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Twinz4Christ Auto level means the camera determines what the volume level is, most of the time that works. If I'm doing a talking head and can monitor the audio myself I will use manual and adjust the volume manually, but almost all of the time I'll just use auto. I do not use the wind attenuation because I use a dead cat on my microphone. I'd say leave that setting off.

    Does it need a pop filter?

    • @TonyMellinger
      @TonyMellinger  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't use a pop filter. That's only If you're very close to the mic and speaking directly into it

      Tony Mellinger That’s what I was using it for essentially. Well. I ended up getting the video Mic NTG. It comes with a foam thing on it, but I’m using a pop filter as well ha ha. I have a bad habit of popping. Haha thinking of doubling up.
