Hahahaha my local Tech shop discouraged me on the changing of the case and GPU. I guess they were just lazy to get the adapter and doing a bit of research. Thanks for this!!! glad I subscribed.
Great stuff!! Getting my better half's z240 tower all worked out before case swap , least amount of down time when swapping. For us in the USA the Comeap psu adaptor works perfectly, I bought a cheaper no name psu adaptor and a cheap new Ares gaming 650w power supply, Turned out they both had problems and returned. Comeap psu adaptor and a new Thermaltake Toughpower GX2 80+ Gold 600W psu worked perfectly. She loves the gtx 1080 over the gtx 1650 that was in it before the OEM psu swap ..... She will love the new Montech case even better I ordered . Again thank you for the great content !!😊
Glad I found this video. Now there's hope that I can do the necessary power supply upgrade at some point in the future. And yes, that power supply upgrade is necessary because my AMD Radeon R7 240 turned out to be a graphics card for office computers. It is good enough for Star Wars: The Old Republic, but not good enough for Witcher 2 - and most graphics cards I'm considering for my HP Z240 require a better power supply than what I currently have in the system.
@TechLabUK Yesterday I received the package, unfortunately the power supply and the cable do not turn on after connecting. the power button lights up and the computer makes a sound. but the fans don't spin... the old power supply is OK. what can I do?
Hi i purchased the24 pin connector. Everything works great however on boot up now i get a 90 e error power supply fan not detected. But it is in fact running. Any thoughts? I used the link provided for the cable. Thank you
This is not something I saw, I am not even sure how it would know but worth checking your bios for any warning / error toggles around this. Maybe mine was already disabled or something.
Nice. My "office" workstation is a DELL Optiplex 9020 ... gonna do the recase treatment to it like this and then flip it. This can make for fairly profitable PC flipping solutions.
I think they can, just a shame sometimes they use green or blue motherboards instead of black although I have been tempted to challenge myself to take this one at some point and make it look amazing in theme.
By jumper I assume you mean the adaptor cable? If so then I would check it is the right one as it should just work, well, if the new PSU is a known working unit that is.
@@TechLabUKthat's too bad. I came to this video looking for the same answer. Recently bought a Z2 G4 with an i7-8700 for just under $200USD. Not nearly as much documentation around modding them yet compared to the Z420
No, haven't tried but I couldn't image it not working considering this is technically a workstation. I suspect the documentation online should say what's supported or not.

Now Sir, the challenge goes a notch higher when you try the HP with the 4 Pin power and 7 Pin PWRCMD connector like in Elitedesk 800 G6. HP buffoonery is magnified you will end up having two switches on your PC.😂
Is the SMPS you have upgraded still working properly or not? Is there any problem with the motherboard by upgrading the SMPS and using the connector? cause i have same system and also i have to swap smps and cabinet please reply
@@ashutoshthokle3995 Yeah, Motherboard works perfectly fine. If you are re-casing you will need to do more modification to get the front USB IO working but if not the PSU change with the adaptor works great.
With this adapter mine pc is turning off with a 1080 and 550 watt power supply under high loads, i have only installed 2 drives and there is no way that the psu cannot supply that power right? Any fixes to that?
Should work fine tbh, the GPU can only pull 75w from the PCIe connector so that shouldn't be an issue as the rest should be coming from the PCIe Power connection in it.
Adapting a PSU to fit the system like in this video means you can use what ever you want. You could throw a 1600w in there and the system will only use what it needs.

@TechLabUK brilliant thank you. Well I just went in loft pulled out my old pc which had a 600w atx modular psu. Plus an old ati crossfire x MB. May try doing something with that too.
I got that computer it said it has an intel core i5 but when I got the computer it said “intel I7 inside” so I went to task manager and it said Intel core i5
to earn carbon credits, use the old case and old z240 PSU and use 1, 2, or 3 built-in displayports. be grateful electricity is available and you're not in prison or on death row. PCIe 3.0 is your best friend when you're alone and have no carbon credit.

Great video thanks. Does that power supply fit inside the old case? Cheers
The PSU fitment is the same standard from a case perspective, it's only the connections which are different.
Looking at buying one very cheap atm , Good to know about the adapter , Great vid 🙂
i got this same pc but the 400 watt gpu was giving green screen on games so wanted to upgrade psu and this video helped a lot
Hello sir!! Can that 400w psu originally installed in z240 handle the 3050 gpu Ga107 version which comes with 6 pin connectors? thanks in advance
Would be pushing it, I believe Nvidia says 500w or above (I think, never had an RTX 3050 tbh).
I bought the 24 to 6 pin adapter but not working, my psu is 550w and I connected all, gpu is integrated.
It start beeping

@@TechLabUK I am taking a different tack. HP puts a 600 watt supply in the z440. It is the same size.
The power supply was a bust.
Is it possible to use the same power adapter backwards? For example, if I wanted to keep the power supply but upgrade the motherboard?
I doubt it as the connections would be the wrong way around.
Good upgrade mate! I was thinking pairing something like a 2060 Super with the i7 6700 for some upcoming content for this build👀
With the new PSU this system can be upgraded a lot more now so not sure where we will take it.

You don't "Need" to do the soldering, without crossing those pins though it will get errors on boot which you can skip, they are just annoying.
