Great content Andy, my two mals and I have learned tons by watching your videos. They are only 6 month old and no am not a trainer but we have accomplished few goals. What would you suggest harness vs collar when training heeling?

Idk.. it seems to give up easily if the dog isn't confident. I didn't see any real advice for a dog that's not, except for try again.

Regarding the electric fence thing - an analogy might be, how do you teach a child not to touch a hot stove? Or anything else that’s hot? They have to experience what “hot” means in the first place. Is there anyone here who hasn’t touched something hot? Sometimes that’s how life teaches us and there’s no avoiding it.

Gotta admit, I've fallen into the TH-cam trainers trap a few times. Certainly made some mistakes that I will never allow to reoccur 😅

    1) play/engagement, 2) make independent and confident on halter leash . First couple of weeks doing both but Not at the same time.

Some men learn by reading, Some me learn by listening; the rest have to pee on the electric fence for themselves.

Thank you for your reasoning on dog trainers on TH-cam. I’m sure we all appreciate it and we ourselves get to take a step back and look at how we do things similar to those other TH-cam trainers, so thank you so we could also reflect back and continue to make progress. Thank you for all you do you the man, Andy.

I used to have a great trainer in another State, he trained the Whitehouse dogs and Navy Seal dogs. So I can recognize a great trainer. We are seriously seeking Mal pups and getting ready by learning and refreshing lots of training. I watched several trainers and some "famous" ones that are "world class" and my eyebrow raised as I spotted some things I instantly didn't love. I got to you about 3rd or 4th and was INSTANTLY impressed. In fact, you even communicate better than anyone I have heard! I'm hooked. Once we put a deposit on the litter we are waiting for I'll hit up your patreon! So, today, I thought "maybe I didn't give other people a fair chance" and I watched a lady...who is obviously getting kickbacks to promote the first guy I wasn't impressed with...but saying some of YOUR catach-phrases as she says "there's no better trainer in the world than this other guy"!!!

Glad you mentioned Ivan. His open discussions around training are invaluable in trying to filter through the information. I hear that you hate a harness I find a lightweight one (ruffwear flagline) very useful for attaching a light long line and using trailing if distracted/show boating on a retrieve with my 8mnth gsp. I never use it for leash work though. It's pretty frowned on in the UK gundog world but I don't feel comfortable attaching a long line to the flat collar and it works for me, I think better not rehearsing the bad habits. She will also be a canicross dog so good that a harness isn't alien to her, harness also useful for tethering if camping etc. I love your no nonsense advice but as with e collars and prong collars don't think it's always a black and white thing with equipment. Thanks again- love your content.
