    As a digital warrior with 32 years of pro playing experience (it's my only job, no day job, playing live and tons of work in my home studio), I appreciate that even though you're a traditionalist, you don't seem nearly as stubborn and closed minded as most. I really appreciate your open mindedness and apparent desire to be neutral and subjective. I've encountered so much snobbery against all my digital modeling equipment which I love and transitioned into being completely digital (Variax into a Helix and now a Spider IV 75 as a backup/practice amp).
    For those looking for advice, I can only say try it yourself and see what YOU think. Music equipment is one of the most subjective and snob-filled areas you will find and you are going to find a ton of people who tell you to stay away from this gear and it sucks, etc. I vehemently disagree. Don't succumb to peer pressure or worry about people thinking you're not cool or use crappy gear. Play what YOU love. A LOT of classic tones on your favorite records would be considered "crappy" tones by snobs if you were using it. It's all subjective and there is no right or wrong or one size fits all. If there's one particular sound you love, then go for it. If you love playing with all the flavors you can and colors there are then the digital revolution can't be beat. I'm never going back to non-modeling gear.
    Remember: no matter how much people might try to convince you, opinions are not facts. They are just opinions.

      just because tube amps are expensive doesn't justify getting a line6. plenty of cheap options in the used market or hybrid amps or digital amp simulations like positive grid bias, ect.

    • @ukmanthailand
      @ukmanthailand 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would you say that amps like this one are still worth considering when buying a first modelling amp or have they been superseded with better, more advanced equipment in the last 7 years?

    • @Brabdo
      @Brabdo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ukmanthailand no, there are many better options. And the options will only get better as digital simulation gets better. Even the new line6 products are hardly convincing and poorly priced.

    • @HeathAllyn
      @HeathAllyn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ukmanthailand Don't listen to the naysayers. Listen with your own ears. I'd say yes. I know plenty of (pro) players still very happy with older Line 6 gear. That being said, of course each generation gets better and better. ''Tis the nature of the beast. Anyone who says they can tell the difference between a current digital model and the real thing in a blind A/B test is psychologically biased. As has been proven with actual blind A/B tests.
      Plug into one, and see if it moves you to play. That's the most important. Just know that you will absolutely encounter tons of gear snobs warning you away.
      And for full disclosure, no I do not work for Line 6. Just a long time very happy user since their very first products. And yes, playing music is my job.

      Thanks for your reply. I'm looking for a hybrid or solid state amp to use at home, preferably with a 12-inch speaker. I used to use a Marshall when I gigged in my youth but I don't want to spend the money on a decent valve amp quite yet (only recently started playing again).

    If you take the crunch red setting and turn the drive all the way down, you get a classic Marshall tube tone.

      @trillrifaxegrindor4411 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      no,actually you do not.i own a marshall and what you get from good old line sux is a plastic fake sounding fart with no life,no harmonic overtones and its flat and lifeless,sorry dont go down that rabbit hole.

    i have the 150w head and 412 cab of this, and i play probs 2 gigs a month of varying size audience/venues, and varying styles. this amp actually gigs pretty darn well once you figure out your base sounds as rob said, and get the right tones for what youre playing. i play varying stuff from metal to blues to old school rock and this performs great for the range of tones i need

    there are a lot of people doing great reviews.. but you are one of the few people who does these great reviews in a fun and very informative way. I can easily watch 10 min videos from you even if you are demoing a product i'm not interested in. Beacuse your videos are fun. Btw.. the the amp seems to be very nice. Cheers from sweden/lenny

    Absolutely the best Line 6 review I've seen. Even better than the ones on the Line 6 website. Nicely done. Plus, you rock at guitar.

  • @gim616

    Tremendous review Rob. I've been using Line 6 for years now (Pods) which is DI'd straight into my soundcard. What i have been craving is having an amp which will produce my sounds/tones at home without upsetting my neighbor (and crank it when i want to). I toyed with the idea of the Orange Dark Terror, Mesa, Engl to get the tube sound at reasonable volumes, but when you way up what these cost against the Spider IV (which is loaded with all the effects i use on a regular basis, ie reverb, chorus, flanger etc) it became a no brainer that the Spider was the way to go. I purchased said amp (75 Watt) for a mere £200 (New) and within a couple of hours i dialed in a great Metal/ Rock tone and i have to say i'm really impressed and it sounds fantastic when you start cranking it up (a fine balance needed between the channel and master volume). Basically for what this amp cost it's worth every penny. I'd also say the 75 Watt Model is loud enough to play in a band/ small gigs without the need for a PA. :)

      no,actually you do not get anything resembling useable guitar tone from this piece of shit.you do understand they have 1.5,10,15 watt tube amplifiers,you get that right?i own a marshall and what you get from good old line sux is a plastic fake sounding defecation with no life,no harmonic overtones and its flat and lifeless,sorry dont go down that rabbit hole.your tone deaf,i get it.the rest of us arent,chappers was paid for this

  • @kenkingsflyingmachines2382

    The debate rages on. I've been playing for over 40 years, and I finally got me a tube amp. A super-cool '65 Epiphone Futura. 50 Watts and 4 -10" speakers. Original 2-button footswitch, real spring reverb and tremelo. I love it. I paid 450 for it and for another 500 I could have somebody I don't know replace all of the 50 year old capacitors, plate resistors, and crumbling wiring so it doesn't sound like a skillet full of frying bacon. THEN buy a few pedals for God-knows how much and a pedal board and a power supply....you get the picture. So for 650, I got a Spider IV 150 with 2-12"s. All the volume, effects, and tones I could ever want.I prefer concentrating on my musicianship than screwing around with outdated technology.

    With the insane/metal/hi-gain, and some adjustments of the bass/mid/treb knob you can. Plus I think you can D/L song presets from the line 6 website, and there might be some TBDM, CC, and other death metal bands.

    The RP-1 is mentioned in this video. There's a preset on the RP-1 called Rippin Solo. I'm currently trying out an RP500. I was hoping there would be a preset that would sound like Rippin Solo but unfortunately none of them really sound close enough. Would anyone know how to get the RP500 to sound like the Rippin solo effect?

      I own a Line 6 Spider IV 150 since 2011 and I have to say, man the thing just sounds awesome! You get a great Modeling-Amp for the money. Of course if you don't really like the whole modeling thing and just wanna turn some knobs, the Spider might not be the thing for you.

    • @leavemealoneyouprick
      @leavemealoneyouprick 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      played a few of them and everytime theyve sounded terrible. a guy local to me gigs with a line 6 head and cab and every time they sounded so bad, i have to leave the venue... although that might also have something to do with their terrible singer.
      also, option paralysis is never worth it. invest in pedals if you want mental effects, you'll thank yourself for doing so in the future!

    What do u think? Spider 4 or Spider Jam? I'm think that sipder jam is better even tho it is a bit older

  • @javanek
    @javanek 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @RaaaawrProductions Depends on what is more important to you. The spider jam doesn't have all the bells and whistles as the spider iv. It is more of a true student practice amp. But the drums/jam tracks and the 24 minute looper are cool features. The spider iv has more effects, more presets amp/cab models. It is a pretty good digital amp for the money. Not a Mesa or Marshall, but also a lot more reasonable for those of us not on tour or sponsored.

      ChanoCYBER9Avila personally i go to high gain amp on the red setting with not too much gain and your eq is basically at 5 all the way around. but there is no wrong way to do it, even the metal setting can get you into a punk kinda area but for me its crunch or high gain with about more than halfway up drive setting.

    Great video, friend!
    I have a question. You say that you would not gig with it because an increase in volume leads to it not performing as well. Say we wanted to gig with it, can we put a microphone to face the line 6, and have the microphone be connected to even larger speakers so that we can not lose the quality of line 6 while getting that increase in volume? (In other words, keep the line 6 at 4/10 volume while larger speakers are at say 7/10)Thank you very much, and you are a very good player!!

    Regarding your comment that when the Spider is opened up it begins to sound too digital. Solid-state amps are usually designed to be used well under maximum output. You should have opted for testing the 120 or 150 watt versions.

    I am just a bedroom player and the last amp i had was a 20 watt Peavey vypyr. It lasted a year so ....for $129 i think i got my money's worth so i was pleased and actually i was about to order another just like it but a 40 watt......then at the last second something just stopped me and said ..." hold up " ...for some damn reason haha. I ended up going with one of these but i got a 30 watt. It's suits my needs though cause like i said i'm just a bedroom jammer but....should i try and get one of those pedal boards then?

    I recently purchased a Fender Mustang I V2 and after having it 3 days it got this nasty hum that wouldn't go away. It was surprisingly loud for a practice amp. I'm just now learning guitar so I don't know much about them yet. The Fender is similar to the Spider lots of presets and also download Fuse and get loads of presets others have made (for free btw). The only prob for me though was the fact that none of the preset tones sounded right to me. I had a real cheap 15w amp that came with my guitar bundle that had overdrive and a regular very clean tone that I actually liked more than any the Mustang had. Of course I never got a chance to go through the millions of other presets,tones, pedals that could be loaded from a pc/mac and saved directly into the amp bc of the hum that WOULD NOT go away. So I took it back and bought the Spider IV 75 watt. It sounded better from just what I heard in the store than the Fender preset tones. I really liked the video I hope I enjoy my new amp when it gets shipped.

    The thing I've noticed playing with my Line 6 Spider III is that I have to set the tone according to where im playing. That being said the tone that I jam with in my bedroom is slightly different than the tone that I Jam with my band or live with. This could be the case with all amplifiers but I wouldn't know, I haven't played them all yet.

    I have this amp.. However, after using presets, I can't seem to go back to a clear tone in manual mode. Anyone else have this issue? I may have to take it into the shop.

    @Pala16123z0r Any idea how that compares to Line 6 Guitar Port? I was thinking of getting either one of those. The Jamvox looks great value with the speaker! Tell me, can you import your own backing tracks in Jamvox and play to those? Also, can it import video too so you can have audio visual?
    Thanks.

    Is this a good amp for just jamming out in your room or taking it to a recording studio at school. At the moment I have the basic ESP 10 amp you get with a LTD guitar pack. Thanks

    I have a Line 6 Spider III in 75W and with the perfect microphone in front of the speaker and I have been in concerts with my band like this and sounds great!
    Don't got all the money in the world for tube amps and this is great in these days of economic crisis.

    At what volume level does the sound become 'trebly' and deteriorate? I imagine Chappers plays pretty loud. A 75 watt ss amp with a 12 inch speaker should be able to go as loud as a Blues Junior unless the power rating is incorrect or the speaker is a cheapo. In the latter case you could swap in something better and still come out ahead??

    I think digital modelling amps have now become more than good enough to use to practice at home, even for professional guitarists. Something like this or the Roland Cube XL range sound fantastic at bedroom volume levels
