A true Portuguese won't care about the Hola translation, we love when people show interest and happiness towards our culture and that's more than enough. Also, the surf instructor was "hard" because we love when people enjoy and are happy in our country and we might get a bit blind by it and try to give the best experience and create a bond out of it, the language barrier makes it hard for us to realize that we might need to slow down. Portuguese people often neglect our own culture, but we always appreciate and are very happy when someone appreciates our culture :) it makes our day,
For the father of the 26-month-old: Portugal is very child-friendly. Children are admitted everywhere (restaurants, hotels, etc) and people in general not only try to help the parents but also play with the children and try to make them feel comfortable.

You should go to Porto (Oporto in english) next time. You'll be amazed how a small country like ours can be so diverse.
