Are you in the US? Varsol is mentioned as a cleaner of choice in Singer literature for the slantmatic 400-series (401, 404, 404 [and maybe the 503]) from the early 1960s. Recommended to service shops to soak whole machine heads, after motor and light assembly removed. Do you have old stock, or is Varsol still available? I use a milky looking low voc mineral spirits- liberal application, not a dunk tank.
