Only a true DIVA can lead a number like this...legendary LIZA.

In Aces High she's giving us Cyd Charissee crossed with Dolores Gray. Fun to see her pay homage to those MGM ladies that she grew up around.

The main reference is "Born in a Trunk" from "A Star is Born". And the "Ace's High" has echoes of "Get Happy" in the choreography. It's a pastiche of Judy Garland material, along with others, as you mentioned.

"New Sun In The Sky" from "The Band Wagon" is what came to mind for me.

Every time I see "Happy Endings" from NYNY, I become more convinced that this sequence is the best thing Scorses has ever done. And it goes without saying that Liza Minnelli is absolutely brilliant here. Great film, one of my faves.

Probably the best musical sequence ever.

@@johnnotrealname8168 It's astounding and never released. I saw it in a director's cut.

I can't watch this without thinking of all the work that went into it - and then tossed away.
The set designers who designed set after set. The wardrobe designer who presented sketches and then supervised the fittings. The choreographer who developed all the elaborate dance sequences. The dancers and the weeks of rehearsals. And all the extras who were thrilled to be in a scene with Liza Minelli in a Scorcese film. And, of course, Liza who had weeks of rehearsal and song recordings.
    All that - gone.

This montage should never have been cut from the original release. It was the yin to the rest of the film's yang, and without it the film's message got lost.

I really don't like the movie I think the story is kind of boring but the all musical parts are outstandings and of course she's got a wonderfull voice. This song is one of my fave from the movie, I never get tired of it! (but I think the very beginning of the song is missing here.) Anyway thanks for sharing!

THIS WHOLE HAPPY ENDINGS SECTION WAS REMOVED AFTER INITIAL RELEASE BUT LATER RESTORED..GOOD IDEA AS THE FILM DID NOT WORK ON THE WHOLE...I WORKED AS AN EXTRA IN MANY OF THE CROWD SCENES..NEVER WORKED SO HARD...LONG DAYS...SAD THE FILM TURNED OUT NOT VERY GOOD...

Poor Larry Kert got cut entirely from the film. Glad I saw the film theatrically when it appeared, but I can't say I liked it. Just did not fly. But some great moments!

the quality is uneven, there's a typo in The Long Waltz credits. sometimes not worthy of Scorcese and Minnelli

The ending of "Happy Endings" looks like a commercial for popcorn circa 1977.

Supposedly based on Doris Day's life...the Jimmy Doyle character sounds a lot like her first husband

    • @tonybennett4159

The "typo", I think you'll find, is deliberate. The sequence is heavily ironic : there ARE no happy endings, the bad spelling, the clapped out titles for the Peggy Smith films shows the worm already at work. This is a film as much about a disintegrating relationship as it is about music. The music is used imaginatively to underscore the basic idea. Look, for instance at the fake motel sequence in the snow earlier in the movie. It is at once a nod to old studio bound movies but also a hint of the unreality of a future happy relationship. That's why I love this movie. I'm not sure that people understood what Scorsese was after.
The Doris Day link I've never heard about. Where can I find the information? Just seems a bit unlikely to me.

does Liza lose her balance at 7.32?

I saw this film as a teen when it first came out. There are some sensational moments and scenes, and some really messy, overlong, pointless ones. It needed a great editor to hone and polish it. Inside the whole mammoth is a brilliant film which would have been/could have been huge. It was completely ignored on release, and it killed Liza's film career which is terrible because she is magnificent in this displaying her comedic talent along with stunning vocals. It just all got mixed up in the mess. Interestingly, De Niro's career survived even though he is very irritating in the film - not a sympathetic bone in the character's body.

Is that Larry Kert? And why was this number again cut from the final print? To me, Miss Liza is again OVER-TRYING too hard. And it's like Carol Burnett spoofing Liza Minnelli here.

It was restored in the 1981 reissue. Hollywierd thought it was too long. They were wrong. It tells the story.

    • @tonybennett4159
      @tonybennett4159 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think the over-trying is part of the point : the sequence was an unrealistic daydream. Just look at TV "talent" shows where the candidates virtually yell a song to try to impress. There's a load of irony in the movie, so it makes more sense as a film if you're tuned into that.

Yes. Larry Kert. The original Tony in West Side Story.

The whole movie was an incoherent hash...just a mess...I saw it first week it was released, and only a snippet of this number was included. The audience at the showing I attended clearly WANTED to love it, but you could sense they threw in the towel 2/3 of the way through. A few half-decent set pieces and the rest: charmless, witless dialogue with some big emo scenes thrown in to hopefully cadge a nomination. De Niro seemed totally lost, though he did a reasonable job faking playing the sax. Minnelli played like a female impersonator would play her. "New York, New York"...such an iconic song, wasn't even nominated for best song that year!!!! You almost got the sense that not enough academy members even saw it. Weird. I read at the time there was a ton of cocaine being used during the filming by the cast and crew. Don't waste your time looking for a copy or download thinking it's an overlooked classic. It ain't!!
