  • I’m checking out sheds at a local shed / barn dealer as potential Bugout cabins or getaway cabins!

I have been wondering about building a shipping container bunker and then hiding it under one of these pre-built sheds. That way you have your shed and or your cabin and do whatever you want to do with it but you have a way to obscure your bunker a little bit I don't know that someone would think about hiding a bunker under there.

Prebuilt will always be double or even triple the price than just doing it yourself. I guess a good thing to do with these prebuilt sheds is to get you one of those big canisters of spray foam insulation. Insulate the walls, then put plywood over it. That's what I did to my shed. Since it's just barebones and had the studs with the aluminum mounted to it but no inside walls. Once I insulated and sealed it up nicely it made a world of difference.

Where I’m located in the in the snow country in Idaho you would probably want a metal roof like most of those had and double up on the roof trusses to handle the snow load. My neighbors shed caved in a couple years ago, did some damage to his ATV. Might have to get a couple of those to house some of my relatives if they don’t get their s#!& together ! 😂

    Insulation insulation insulation!
Need minimum 2x6 for insulation! Must be able to control the interior climate.

I've thought about doing the same thing. I live is southwest Idaho, and land in eastern Oregon is pretty cheap. Not sure if I'd want it in Oregon though.

If you can afford it, have a patch of land, these are perfect. But find some leaded paint or make it yourself - lead interferes with heat, I.R. and other military tech and most all frequencies. Make it a true, invisible safe house.

Might be just as inexpensive to get a shipping container. Just a thought

My question is how warm is it in the cold Idaho winter. Obviously insulate it and put some flooring, I’d be down to live like that on a small piece of land. Thanks for the video!

Thanks for your question, it doesn’t get too cold here usually.. absolute coldest temps we see are maybe like -3 but it’s usually in between 15 - 30 degrees throughout the winter.. if you insulated one of those units properly and had a wood stove going you would more than warm enough.. probably too warm! thanks for watching!

It does depend on where you're at in Idaho too. Here in Moscow not too far from Coeur d'Alene it doesn't get incredibly cold. However we can get quite a bit of snow which the city doesn't do a great job of plowing but then we get rain which melts it then snow then rain It's a little bit miserable weather.
Up north around Coeur d'Alene I think the weather's a little bit easier.
But just down the hill in Lewiston it is wonderful weather in the winter at least. Very hot in the summer but temperatures are high enough to keep golf courses open year-round etc. And this weather is sun south quite the ways.
Where I'm from in Southeast Idaho it can get down right nasty sometimes. I saw it snow on the 4th of July once but that was just kind of a weird anomaly I believe.
I grew up on the Snake River plane right by the river and the weather wasn't horribly cold but it could get pretty cold and you could get a lot of snow.
On the freeway on I-15 which drops down out of Montana into Idaho and actually eventually ends up in LA The weather can get pretty dicey at times. Lot of wind out there and get a lot of snow it can get damn cold.
Southern Idaho though for the most part isn't horribly cold.

It's a nice building but there is one problem and that's the front door its causing you to lose a whole lot of space just for a design element which I rather have the whole corner of the building since there's not much space and a porch can be put on the front o the building.

The nice thing about Old Hickory is you can custom design these to your specs but beware, these are made by subbed companies. I have an OH 12x24 garage I ordered to my specs. Lots of mistakes in build like missed screws in roofing, not hitting the studs, doors not lining up with lock mechanism, improperly nailed trim over siding. If buying off the lot, do thorough inspection and if having pre-made and delivered to your site, do thorough inspection upon delivery. Before buying , might want to confirm who the contractor is that builds them for the OH agent who sells them and do a background check on contractor.

Prebuilt sheds are horribly overpriced! For the price you'd pay for that low-quality wafer shack you could, by doing it yourself, get: a larger building; plywood and hardie board instead of OSB; 2x6 framing; impact door and windows, foam insulation, a concrete slab.... and more. Sweat equity!
