You can actually see Guy's realization set in as Sam tells him about his mom. There's a heavy softness in his eyes and you can see him looking at Sam as a friend for once, and not just a temporary thorn in his side.
VanDangerousInc Yes, his frown disappeared once Sam confessed he never had a family, when he asked "What did you say?", and when Sam said that the one memory about his mom was not important, he tells Sam to go ahead and say what he remembered about his mom as if to say, "It's okay, you can tell me." And so their friendship deepened in this scene as Guy got to know Sam even more.

It makes sense, the reason sam always eats green eggs and ham, it's not just an all around great dish, it's also the one thing he has to remember his mom, and the one thing he always wants to eat to try and find her
yes and no, but indeed he is a very complex-character and he did developed several emotional-defense mechanisms to deal with those heavy abandonement issues, as he actually has a splitted-personality when revealed all the dirty criminal record on him for surviving, which made him actually a very shady and kinda-egotistical fellow which covered well under that polite and positive happy-go-lucky attiude, but he actually could be very cold-thought and amoralistic on doing things, untill... he mets Guy and actually did developed a harder fixation on him than just a close-friendship thing for him. And that feeling on true caring on someone else, and being true cared-back changed his mind reconnecting with his true good self hidden benneath all but still needed Guy to break-up first for him realizing being very mistaken on what he did before. The ending is mainly positive but still he has several things to deal on, like he shouldn't be seeing Guy as something else than just the very close-best friend he got with him, because the glances he does to him at the breakfast and other times imply a lot more than just a happy close-friendship thing, thus becoming Sam a very special guy for that if it's properly addressed for Season 2 and develops it something with someone else getting more healthier relationships between Sam & Guy and Sam and this very special-one, being a very bold move on Netflix if properly addressed what Sam has been on himself all along.
Where is it written that something so simplistic cannot be so powerful? This goes above and beyond the generic kids Netflix series. The beauty is that no amount of emotion that any human being can express and understand is either too little or too great
Wow, for a kid’s show, THAT’S REALLY DARK, the whole “left him at an orphanage” thing. I have 2 theories: 1. She did it because she didn’t love sam enough, and 2. She(sam’s mom) was unable to take care of him, so she did what was probably, in a way, right. I guess? But, the whole green eggs and ham thing probably means she loved him a lot, so it’s probably the second one, unable to raise him herself so put him through the care of other people. (An orphanage)
however Not all Orphanages are good places Most of them are run by Corrupt, militaristic Wardens who violate every welfare law through deprivation of food, water and fun of any sort to keep the kids there in line to the point the ICAC was established in 1974
I think it's gonna be 3 and some weird incredible series of events forced her to. It may hve even been half accidental. We'll see what they come up with (if this ever gets a sequel).
I think she loved him, I dont know why else she made green eggs and ham if she didnt, maybe she just went through hard times, and couldnt support sam, but now shes most likely rich now because of the her green eggs and ham recipe at the end of the 1st season
This scene hit me so hard. I was already very emotionally attached to him from the start of the show, but when this showed up, I was BAWLING my eyes out. I wanted to keep him safe, hug him and protect him under my wing. To me, Sam is more than a friend. He's my family and son. I'll always love him vwv
I was so close to crying you have no i d e a. Props to the creators of this show for their amazing writing. The way such a simple thing as "She made me breakfast." Makes you feel devastated is incredible. Tying in Green Eggs and Ham not only to make it a plot element but to have it be an essential part of Sam's character is genius! The way the lights slowly go down until only the blue light inside the tent is there is so small and aesthetic. It makes you feel alone, but not so lonely. The editing and animation throughout all of this show is done so well and I just can't compliment it enough. Props to you, Netflix.
not gonna lie, this scene made me cry and is probably my favourite in the whole season--the voice acting, the writing, the music; everything is perfect and heartbreaking, and his loneliness was spelled out in the first few episodes brilliantly
Can we just appreciate the detail of the colorful lights when Sam was telling Guy how creative he is and how he should keep trying, representing how much hope Sam has for his future, and the lights abruptly dimming when the topic shifts to Sam's mom, representing how much sadness Sam was hiding? Ohmygod.
Hell, not even the fact that "he never knew her" technically; he actually has a bit of memory (& a good one), & that would arguably make his confusion & sadness! Like tf did we go from a pro-veggie eating mini story to this?? 🖐😭 (Edit: I got the full backstory, & I still like this scene better; some of the stuff in the fully explained stuff in the backstory felt a bit too goofy to make me feel the same emotions that this bit gave me with its grounded, slightly silly moment with Sam just venting to Guy.)
this scene is why "House" is my favorite episode, it's so well written, like, the characters hardly say anything, but you feel like your being poured over the head with a 200-page novel of information and emotion. I think the only thing that could've made it better is if the twist was in the next episode, rather than being after a scene where we are supposed to feel for Sam.

This show is both hilarious and emotional and dark at the same time Sam I Am and Guy have real chemistry going on and the characters aren’t generic they actually have motivation
When he said she made him breakfast ... I started crying. And did anybody else notice how it looked like Sam was choking down that egg, like it hurt to eat it? I think maybe because was holding back on crying.
Like, I knew his story was probably gonna be sad, but I didn't expect that. It kinda shows a glimpse into the other bit of life in Dr Suess' universe, I guess. This world is just so happy, with cheerful and silly people left and right, but even that crazy world has characters that have sad origins, like Sam. And Guy to. The story going from crazy bird creatures eating ties, being hunted down by 'bad guys', overly silly townsfolk... to discussing topics like (zero) self confidence, giving up, feeling like the disappointment in the family (which I can relate to) and child abandonment. (And hearing him say that he just wants to ask his mom why is what got to me..) Its such a twist (to me at least)
This is the moment when the show really started becoming something special. It was enjoyable and fun before then, but this moment really highlighted the similarities between Guy and Sam. Both of them are lonely. Guy thinks he's alone because everything goes wrong for him and his family is more successful than him while Sam is alone because his mother abandoned him at an orphanage. After you learn these facts, you realize how their backstories have shaped who they are. It shows how far they've come at this point and shows they've brought out the best in each other. It's also at the point where Guy really starts to see Sam as his best friend which of course makes the anger that he feels later on pretty justified. When you open up about feelings that you've kept secret for so long to a person and then you feel that person had stabbed you in the back, it makes you wonder if any of it was even real.

As I watched the previous episodes before this one, I actually believed Sam when he made up the things he and his mom used to do, only to be surprised later when he confessed that he made those stories up. It made me want to give him a warm hug.
Same!!! I kept picturing his mom doing all these things with him. Being told “Samuel I-Amuel, you are a handful!”, probably making a sandwich for him and “Reggie”, winning those stuffed toys for him and building the sheet fort. I saw it all and laughed. That’s changed whenever I rewatch this haha
I'm a 28 year old mother showing the series to my 2 year old. When you expect you're child to be sad... Yeah... I was crying. My daughter was saying "Awweeeee," and in her mind. You crying mommy? Yes... I wish I could hug him. Wait... I am a cartoonist... No matter how old you are you're never too old. This hit me hard. I love this adaption. Character development and emotions. I'm happy how it turned out. I know she had a reason. Me I couldn't do that to my daughter because I love her. I wouldn't know what to do without her or my husband. 💞
Great news everyone! Although there is no release date yet, it's been confirmed by actress Llana Glazer who voiced EB that we can expect a seasonally 2 sooner than we think. And yes, it'll pick up from where we left off at the end of season 1's final episode where Sam and Guy journey once again to East Flubria to find Sam's mother. So basically we are expected to meet her.
Also I want to talk about the reasons why this scene touched so many people’s hearts! Not only by the amazing VOICE acting /animation/script/ BUT THE SET UP! this is key factor in storybaording ! When Sam stated “she made me breakfast” the camera paneled over the Green Eggs and Ham to emphasize how much it really meant to him! This will make the you (the audience) immediately recall his obsession with that food for the past few episodes! Along with his ongoing stories about his mother will have it stored in your head for this EXACT MOMENT! . . Guy didn’t NEED to ASK what she cooked! The story answered it for US!

I have the theory that actually Sam never did totally lied about the things he said when being little just that his mother wasn't involved in there at least for most of them - the one which could have been more true was the one of his mother scolding on him with his full true name as he said at the train to E.B. because he acknowledged she was very much like him indeed, so he was mostly his true to her before to Guy (also he was also attempting to do more than just making a friendship with him anyway but that's another ambiguous thing which maybe not all audience will notice or accept about him). Still he indeed had some anecdothes about an imaginary friend, about furr plushies, and all the other things he said to Guy but just his mother wasn't involved there.

Abrial Woodford Yes, I was shocked at that part too where it was revealed he worked with the villain. I gasped and thought to myself, if he was the one who was going to sell Mr. Jenkins to Mr. Snirz, then who are the other two? But thankfully he changed his mind after realizing Mr. Jenkins needed to be free to reunite with his mother, and Sam misses his own mother. And yes, I look forward to seeing more of Guy's relationship with EB's mom and becoming EB's new dad since her real dad passed away.
I glossed over the trailer of this show on TH-cam. I thought it was a show based off the book, and for little kids. Later, I saw a clip from the show about how Sam has several fake identities, and is a master criminal. I learned my assumption was wrong, and that video was a hilarious rebuttal to that assumption. Now I see this, and realise I'm missing out on something beautiful.
Jonathan Cruz but maybe she had a reason that was kinda hard for her to tell sam. What i love about this scene is that sam shows no grudge against his mom. He just wants to understand the reason why she left. Sam is just so sweet and pure... poor baby. This is why he is mostly happy and why he loves being nice to others, especially to guy. Because he understands what it feels like to be lonely.

The direction of the lighting at the beginning is just as good as the performances and writing: Blue when Sam says "I do" because of the weight of the sad truth he's about to reveal, then reverting back to normal because his true colors are finally shining through to Guy. This show is a modern masterpiece.

I thought that too, or that she had to give him up in order to protect him from whatever cruel fate was waiting for him and her. Perhaps she had a run in with a bad person and thought that giving Sam up to an orphanage was safer. I'm really curious to see how they will handle the reunion of Sam and his mom. Something tells me this series will be getting a second season.

So, this is a little bit off topic, but I’m writing a show and one of the characters is adopted. I don’t have that experience myself so it’s difficult for me to know how this character will deal with not knowing his/her parents. I never knew how to describe that sadness, but now that I’ve seen this scene with Sam, I think I know a little bit better how to write about the subject.

I think both are sadder, because Grinch (the 2018 movie) explain that it wasn't Christmas that he hated, but being alone what made him bitter ever since he was a kid while Sam want to know why his mom left him at the orphanage

PuccaLover15 I was shocked too when I first saw this scene. As I watched the previous episodes before this one, I actually believed Sam when he made up the things he and his mom used to do, only to be surprised later when he confessed that he made those stories up. It made me want to give him a warm hug.
Same!!! I kept picturing his mom doing all these things with him. Being told “Samuel I-Amuel, you are a handful!”, probably making a sandwich for him and “Reggie”, winning those stuffed toys for him and building the sheet fort. I saw it all and laughed. That’s changed whenever I rewatch this haha
How did a light-hearted show based on a popular children's book turn into something so dark and serious
I'm a 28 year old mother showing the series to my 2 year old. When you expect you're child to be sad... Yeah... I was crying. My daughter was saying "Awweeeee," and in her mind. You crying mommy? Yes... I wish I could hug him. Wait... I am a cartoonist... No matter how old you are you're never too old. This hit me hard. I love this adaption. Character development and emotions. I'm happy how it turned out. I know she had a reason. Me I couldn't do that to my daughter because I love her. I wouldn't know what to do without her or my husband. 💞

This should be called the Green Eggs and Feels. Such an emotional, and well-written scene.
Great news everyone! Although there is no release date yet, it's been confirmed by actress Llana Glazer who voiced EB that we can expect a seasonally 2 sooner than we think. And yes, it'll pick up from where we left off at the end of season 1's final episode where Sam and Guy journey once again to East Flubria to find Sam's mother. So basically we are expected to meet her.

Also I want to talk about the reasons why this scene touched so many people’s hearts! Not only by the amazing VOICE acting /animation/script/ BUT THE SET UP! this is key factor in storybaording ! When Sam stated “she made me breakfast” the camera paneled over the Green Eggs and Ham to emphasize how much it really meant to him! This will make the you (the audience) immediately recall his obsession with that food for the past few episodes! Along with his ongoing stories about his mother will have it stored in your head for this EXACT MOMENT!

(I haven’t watched this series yet, I just saw this on TH-cam randomly and decided to watch it haha)
I have the theory that actually Sam never did totally lied about the things he said when being little just that his mother wasn't involved in there at least for most of them - the one which could have been more true was the one of his mother scolding on him with his full true name as he said at the train to E.B. because he acknowledged she was very much like him indeed, so he was mostly his true to her before to Guy (also he was also attempting to do more than just making a friendship with him anyway but that's another ambiguous thing which maybe not all audience will notice or accept about him). Still he indeed had some anecdothes about an imaginary friend, about furr plushies, and all the other things he said to Guy but just his mother wasn't involved there.

Poor Sam I really felt bad for him I never seen him feel down or sad since the story book I remember. But I like the series better because they have Adventure.

Abrial Woodford Yes, I was shocked at that part too where it was revealed he worked with the villain. I gasped and thought to myself, if he was the one who was going to sell Mr. Jenkins to Mr. Snirz, then who are the other two? But thankfully he changed his mind after realizing Mr. Jenkins needed to be free to reunite with his mother, and Sam misses his own mother. And yes, I look forward to seeing more of Guy's relationship with EB's mom and becoming EB's new dad since her real dad passed away.
I glossed over the trailer of this show on TH-cam. I thought it was a show based off the book, and for little kids. Later, I saw a clip from the show about how Sam has several fake identities, and is a master criminal. I learned my assumption was wrong, and that video was a hilarious rebuttal to that assumption. Now I see this, and realise I'm missing out on something beautiful.

Jonathan Cruz but maybe she had a reason that was kinda hard for her to tell sam. What i love about this scene is that sam shows no grudge against his mom. He just wants to understand the reason why she left. Sam is just so sweet and pure... poor baby. This is why he is mostly happy and why he loves being nice to others, especially to guy. Because he understands what it feels like to be lonely.

Blue when Sam says "I do" because of the weight of the sad truth he's about to reveal, then reverting back to normal because his true colors are finally shining through to Guy.

I thought that too, or that she had to give him up in order to protect him from whatever cruel fate was waiting for him and her. Perhaps she had a run in with a bad person and thought that giving Sam up to an orphanage was safer. I'm really curious to see how they will handle the reunion of Sam and his mom. Something tells me this series will be getting a second season.

So, this is a little bit off topic, but I’m writing a show and one of the characters is adopted. I don’t have that experience myself so it’s difficult for me to know how this character will deal with not knowing his/her parents. I never knew how to describe that sadness, but now that I’ve seen this scene with Sam, I think I know a little bit better how to write about the subject.

Yesenia The Hedgehog It actually reminds me of the illumination Grinch, except Sam didn't turn bitter, but the Grinch did, especially on Christmas. I am not sure which one is even sadder.
I think both are sadder, because Grinch (the 2018 movie) explain that it wasn't Christmas that he hated, but being alone what made him bitter ever since he was a kid while Sam want to know why his mom left him at the orphanage
