- Hunt 1000 Journey: Episode 4 - Licola to Mount Hotham and the alpine trails between.
In this episode of my Hunt 1000 bikepacking journey, I tackle the rugged and breathtaking terrain from Licola to my halfway point at the top of Mount Hotham. As I venture deeper into Victoria's high country, I face some of the toughest backcountry alpine trails that test my endurance and mental strength to the limit.
The path ahead is filled with steep, loose trails and limited water supply points, pushing me to strategize and adapt to the harsh conditions. As if the trail itself wasn't challenging enough, an impending thunderstorm looms at 1800 meters elevation, adding an extra layer of excitement and urgency to the ride.
Join me as I navigate this incredible stretch, battling both the elements and my own limits. Along the way, I'll share insights into my gear choices, trail tactics, and how I cope with the physical and mental demands of this epic adventure. Whether you're a seasoned bikepacker or just curious about the Hunt 1000, there's something here for everyone.

You’re amazing! Not just the cycling but for producing such thoughtful and high quality videos.
Thank you so much for the comment. This has made my day :)
What an adventure! I'll be sad when it's over! You're making me want to get out there myself- very inspirational stuff.
Just started watching your channel. Your vids are great & inspiring. Love your commentary too. Cheers. Gerard
Thanks Gerard, it has been an interesting experience talking to the camera. But I found once I got started you couldn't shut me up :)
Really enjoying your videos. It takes a lot of work to film oj thisentyles of rides, let alone all the editing. Well done!
Thanks very much, I have been really loving the editing side of it. I definitely liked the more relaxed style of this event. It gave me time to stop and film along the way.
Thanks for uploading your Hunt ride, very enjoyable to watch, I won't be putting this one in the bin😊, very much looking forward to the ep5
I am absolutely loving this. Your bin shelter was the best decision given the circumstances and your Mcgyver scale cracks me up every time. 😂 I’m so glad I found your channel.
Haha best part was a local came to check in the morning because she could see my bike tucked underneath the Bin. She got a bit of a shock to find me having breaky in there. I said I had a good stay and would be checking out by 10am 😂
I've worked my way through all the days, and I can't wait for the next one. Thanks for vlogging this!
Thanks very much, really glad you're enjoying it. These sorts of comments have motivated me to keep editing :)
Loving your videos, its such a great way to remember the adventure. Extra kudos for taking the extra effort to film along the way. The ride is hard enough on its own. Are you doing it again this year? Looking forward to watching your next one.
Hey Nat, it has been a lot of fun rewatching all the footage and piecing together the timeline. I won't be on the start line this year; I'll be an official dot watcher this time round :)
I was right behind you! I can see my tent at the 630 mark lol. Unfortunately pulled out on this day due to my knee. Hopefully can give it a go again sometime.
Oh no, I got really lucky with my knees this trip. Hopefully you on the start list again soon. 👍
great work. I am a hiker, this would be great to walk, well done
Agreed it would be an incredible walk. The route crossed paths a few times with the Australian Alps walking track. I met someone who was doing it on horseback. I'm off to hike in NZL South Island in a couple months for the first time. Can't wait!
@@scout8co I normally hike northern Italy, but have also decided to hike south island new zealand instead, have fun, keep me up to date if you would
loving the series! the Hunt is definitely on my bucket list. How did you rate the bivvy/tarp set up? Would you choose that set up if you were to do it again?
Thanks :) I really love the bivy/tarp setup and would do it again. On shorter trips I'd just use a tarp but I knew I'd be in snake territory and didn't fancy one crawling into my sleeping bag with me. Part of my strategy though was to make sure I would at least have some form of shelter overhead every second day so if I did get caught in the weather, I could have a chance to dry out. I think if I was in a tent too it would hard to get me out of it in the mornings 😂
Really enjoying this series. Videos are really well put together. I'm watching with intent as I've just signed up for this year. I notice you rode a bike with no suspension - how well did that work for you?
Thanks for the comment John, I am so excited for you. I'll keep an eye out on MAProgress for you. I was hoping to get these videos out before this years' ride and hopefully motivate some riders deep in training.
I have to admit I really didn't have any issues not having suspension but I think this was because I chose to take longer and ride less each day so I had plenty of rest off the bike. Also the walking/hike-a-bike time helped. I also had the drop bars and TT-bars so I had options to re-position if my hands were getting sore. I have never ridden a suspension bike long distance so I might not know what I am missing out on too. :) Happy training
