I've been an amateur club maker for many years and have re-gripped hundreds of clubs. I have to admit that I never thought to use a heat gun to soften grip tape adhesive to remove it easier. Live and learn. Great video!
So. Years ago I watched one of your videos so I could find out how to change a shaft. Fast forward to now, I've spent a pile of money on tools. I've watched all your and Roger Maltby videos and read a pile of books. I'm hooked. I love building clubs for myself, my friends and now have a few "customers". Thanks for your videos. It really inspired me to take up such a gratifying hobby I can do for the rest of my life. I love this game and seeing what differences are made when I tweak things in my builds. Thanks again!
Excellent videos. I especially enjoy you including the tools/methods for the DIY persons. Knowing we don't need the sophisticated, professional setups to successfully re-grip a few clubs is a big help. thanks again... (and enjoy your "conversational" mode of presentation 👍)
Rubbing the grip solvent on the grip after installation is the best tip ever. Heard the tip from the guy in the above video some time ago and everyone loves it. Ripper kick-ass tip...rubbing solvent on the grip after installation. Thanks McGolf guy!
Your an inspiration thank you for all u show us. U keep my dreams alive. Seriously. I love golf I want to hit the course so bad I can even afford a set let alone a cheap set. I have three kids as a single father it’s really hard. But watching u makes me believe anything can be done and happen. One day I hope I can come see u to get fitted for my first set of clubs ever. Thank you seriously
Just got back into golf after 10 plus years. My daughters are starting to play too. Had to figure out how to do this to save time & money. I started with the double sided tape and grip solution. Got the Winn DriTacs on with little issue on graphite shafts. Tried to put a golf pride MCC plus 4 on a SS wedge and it only went on half way. Talked to a golf smith at golf galaxy who told me to use a compressor (what he does at home, not work). I had the equipment so I gave it a go. One layer of regular masking tape, twirled and capped the end, dipped the tip of the grip in mineral spirts, got it started, hit it with the air, BOOM! SO EASY and zero mess. Air method is the way to go. Now if I could just figure out how to not scratch the shafts when cutting the old grips off. I swear I've tried every angle with the hook blade but keep catching it in certain spots.
Clean mine after every round with a damp rag with hot water and Dawn dish washing liquid ....because like you said it's your confection to the club ....but I play with people who haven't seen the grooves on their clubs since the first round they played them 8 years ago ....
I regripped an old Odyssey 330 putter. I used a utility knife to cut the old grip which was slick and falling apart. I left the old tape on the shaft. I then took some IPA and used an old toothbrush to apply it to the old tape and slid the new Golf Pride Tour grip on. It was easy to rotate to align and since it's a putter I wasn't too concerned with the grip slipping out due to swing speed.
TYVM , that was extremly usefull & very humorus at the same time , really showed everything i needed to know , most other vids don't show the whole club so you can see for yourself how it lines up , TY again
hi there, I love watching your videos, I would also like to give you a tip for removing the grip, get your compressor, the needle bit and simply blow air into the handle, the grip will come off without any damage to the shaft..piece of cake..ty.
I bought a tire inflator ($80) and put grips on with air. Nice thing is grips are easily removed with same process. Some say no tape, some masking and some painters tape.
Just did my first grip, had a real hard time getting this grip on (legit had to use all my force to get it over the taped shaft). Was it just a matter of not applying not enough solvent or does it dry that fast? Was able to salvage it but want to know for next time. Thanks!
My wife was listening as I was watching this. Heard the part about wiping grips on the course said "hey, you wipe you grips off". Enjoyed the video, I will have to try the heat next time I regrip mine, and the paint tray too.
The title of your video is, “How to put on a golf club grip.” Obviously I chose this video based on its title. I don’t need you to spend the first 4:53 minutes telling me all the reasons why I may need a new grip. Lol. That’s a waste of time. I already know why I need to put on a new grip. That’s why I picked this video based on its title. I want to know how. 🙂 the rest of the video was really good. Thanks.
What is the best way to line up the golf club head when re gripping? I am struggling with ensuring that the head is perfectly lined up with the alignment lines on the new grips, Thanks Steve
Lamkin has the best grip hands down the lamkin sonar blue or black midsize they have standard and jumbo also. I have yet to find a grip better then lamkin
I've tried every grip in the book. I don't wear a glove either. The best grips I've ever used are the Golf pride Tour wrap 2G These grips don't wear out!!! I should state that I only use them on my Irons. I use Winn grips and another type of Golf Pride grips on my Hybrids, Fairway and Driver. I prefer a different feel on my Woods from using a wrap. I do replace my own grips. But I haven't replaced the grips on my Irons for at least 5 years!!! The 2G grips are Rubber and Tacky as well. My hands don't slip even when it's wet or it's really humid and my hands get sweaty. I clean them with dish washing liquid several times a year. After I clean them they get even more tacky and they feel like New!! Like I said these don't wear out. If you haven't tried them you should. Bring on the 2020 golf season. My grips are ready to roll...
I have 2 sets of grips I want to test before I decide which grip I want to stick with so I’m going to blow them on(and might end up doing that for the final set) my only concern is are you worried about the grip slipping or twisting when done that way? A buddy of mine uses masking tape as a base and applies hairspray to it before blowing the grip on(it stays wet at first as a lubricant then dries very sticky making it essentially like double sided tape) didn’t know what your thoughts on the slippage was. Thanks!
Put some new grips on my gmax 400 driver and my old ping rapture 4 wood couple months back and I have put several grips on no issues ....I bought 2 midsized z cord golf pride grips and man o man did I have issues like to have not got them on ...used the old method as you call it but couldn't get them to slide on but about 2 inches and that was it .... luckily I have a air compressor and a blow nosel and was able with to fight them on ..... question is have you had this issue with this grip .....first ones I have installed and I really like the feel ....I am usually a lampkin utx midsize guy but felt the z cord on a buddy of mines epic driver and really liked it so went with it ....but I almost didn't get them on ....
Thanks in advance for your kind answer... What kind of solvent and tape should I use for the "old school" method? How is the needle for the blowing method?
If I were to begin to regrip my clubs at home, what all equipment and materials would I need, where would I get it at, and how much would it cost me? I’m all about DIY as Dick’s would charge me $3 per club to regrip. Only thing that scares me is alignment of grip on club. I use the Winn Dri Tac dark gray grips. Great video and I look forward to your response!
Thanks for the video! I have a question I cannot find an answer to. 2 days ago I regripped my clubs and a few of the grips are sliding around on me. I used double sided tape and solvent. Any idea what I could have done wrong? If it perhaps bad tape?? Thanks!
make sure the core of the grip matches the OD of the shaft. I.e. .600 core and .600 butt section. if thats ok then you might have an air bubble. Take a needle or the end of and utility knife poke the grip.
When I plug the back of the grip and slide it on the shaft, when I let my thumb go liquid shoots all over me unless I slowly bleed all the back pressure. Do you experience this as well?
Pulling and pushing the grip during installation will alter the grips diameter and length. Should the finished grip be the same size as it was (lengthwise) before installation?
yes it should. i always mark the shaft temporarily with a piece of masking tape about a 1/4 inch from the end of the grip length . know then exactly where the grip should extend too. always good to push uniformly with the butt with one hand as the rest of the grip with the other hand.plenty of solvent helps, work it on smartly.
I have re-gripped my clubs a few times but on the most recent session for a new set of irons, I did not cover the butt end well for some and fear the mineral spirits I was using was inside the shaft when I set it down (club head down, grip upright). My concern is whether the mineral spirits could harm the epoxy bond with the club head to the point I should consider getting them reshafted. It’s my paranoia kicking in but was hoping to get some insight from your experience…
the good thing is mineral spirits tend to evaporate quickly. This lends the idea it doesn't get a chance to eat in the epoxy bond. Id say you are good.
Quick question about grip size. I've always used standard grips, fits the way they show, middle finger and ring finger just touching the thumb pad. I had a midsize grip put on my 7 iron, fits the same as standard. I wear a glove medium/ large. Is it al. About feel ? Thank you new subscriber, great channel.
Feel and confidence will always outweigh the actual measuring. If they both fit the same Id guess there is a grip pressure thing going on and go with the mids if you like the feel better
Tried using the link to get the equipment you recommended but there is nothing on the Amazon site (page expired?). Where can I get a list of your recommended equipment? Great channel!
Ha, Ha. Those "tours" are exactly the ones I will be replacing on my $85 / set used graphite irons. I almost don't want to look for rubber ones. These look like leather wrap.
Hello, thanks for the great video. Looks like your store link does not work for me? And when I search in amazon I cant see the tools section. Can anyone help me find this liquid and tape, Thank You!
What would cause a grip to remain loose after install? Are there different diameters? I installed a set one time, if felt firm but if I really tried, it would twist...particularly in warmer weather. I have never had it happen since, but the cause still bothers me years later.
for irons it is down the center of the shaft aimed at the base of the irons, for woods it is the same except you aim for the top of the crown near the face.
Awesome content. I actually re gripped of few old putters with the flat side of the grip facing to the right. My question: why does some go on so easy while others are tough? Also can you do a troubleshoot for re gripping problems.
I never know whether you need to remove the backing on two sided tape to expose the second side of sticky?! Common sense says of course you do, but I never see anyone do it in any gripping videos.... help.... I can see advantages to not doing it, a thicker build up of tape, perhaps easier to position the grip or remove it before it dries. I don't know what I'm saying.
My local club just lets me head into the staff area and let me regrip my own clubs. Unfortunately someone lost the tool used to remove the tape from the shaft. Would love a referral to something that you use to remove tape from the shaft when regripping. Somethin not too expensive its likely going to be an investment for the club as well since they haven't been proactive about finding something the past 3 months
I just use the bent coat hanger to loosen the grip so I can pour a bit of white spirit down there then use the airline.. works a treat but I’d only do that if the grips are good otherwise I just knife them off
Glenn W, stick a tee in the hole on top of grip. Make sure a small amount of tape wraps over the end of the shaft. This will cause the grip to slide on a layer of air. Don't remove the tee until the grip is on correctly. When tee is removed grip will set firmly (still wait a while). At the bottom (small end) of most grips there will be a small line in the grip or a gap in the paint for alignment to the middle of the leading edge of the club.
DUDE, the solvent activates the glue on the tape...geeze. AIR doesn't do this... You put out a lot of mis-information in your videos...for sure. I got so many air only grip installs back I stopped doing it. Humidity is your enemy

I have been regriping my clubs for 35 years and I use a hairdryer for getting the tape off of the shaft.
Use WD40 to remove the tape residue, works amazingly well.
Thanks for the tip on using the knife properly, I've often wondered how to cut off a grip without scratching my graphite shafts.

I like the wrap 2G, but have recently tried the CP2 wrap, its very similar but is in the new plus 4 style. Enjoying the thicker lower grip size.

If you want to add extra tape wraps are there any tips like overlap etc? Or is it just lay them one on top of the next?

I need a hooked blade. Where douya get those? I’ve regripped my own clubs for years. Never though to use heat to remove. Thanks for tips.
If it’s not in my store it will be. Or go to the local Home Depot , menards, Lowe’s it’s right next to the stanleys

During installation, if your grip gets stuck halfway, is there a way to continue it or do you have to pull it off and start over again?
you could inject solvent, the easier way is to pull it off and start over.

I had that happen using a new style grip, the butt section kept turning. There different internal diameters that could cause that to happen
when you say...make sure the grip is aligned...well....aligned to what??? Where should the grip logo be pointed on the club face????
for irons it is down the center of the shaft aimed at the base of the irons, for woods it is the same except you aim for the top of the crown near the face.
Awesome content. I actually re gripped of few old putters with the flat side of the grip facing to the right. My question: why does some go on so easy while others are tough? Also can you do a troubleshoot for re gripping problems.
Sometimes it is size of grip to size of the shaft, lack of grip solvent, stopping the slide halfway

You don't use double sided tape ???
I do it’s 2” wide tape when using solvent. Depending on the builder some don’t use tape for air installs and some due

Ben Searle yes you need to pull off that layer

Lots of tips. Thank you. Please go straight to the topic rather a long, even interesting intro.
It makes me so angry watching you do that because whenever I try the grip does NOT just slide on like that. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.
I solved a lot of my problems by being more liberal with solvent. More solvent on the tape will make things slide better.
Never regrip a club when you're angry. 👍🏻
Glenn W, stick a tee in the hole on top of grip. Make sure a small amount of tape wraps over the end of the shaft. This will cause the grip to slide on a layer of air. Don't remove the tee until the grip is on correctly. When tee is removed grip will set firmly (still wait a while).
