    It's really annoying to me. I'm short sighted and have nystagmus. I can see a car and it's lights easily from like 200m away, I just struggle with text far away. I'll never need to read a number plate from such a distance, never. It's such a silly thing to be assessed on especially when I can see other vehicles from far away easily- just not text, which doesn't matter

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You need to be able to read text on road signs, plus if you can't read something at 20 metres, which is not far at all, then it means you eyesight is pretty poor and you may have trouble seeing smaller hazards such as bicycles, motorbikes and pedestrians.

      I agree with you it frustrates me because I can drive safely and read everything well like road signs, traffic lights I can see what's infront of me and far but having to read a relatively small writing I think can be difficult I also read yellow car templates better but I'm glad they give you three attempts

    It is amazing how far technology and the regulations have been tightened up regarding driving tests. If you did a driving test in 1955 in a small van, as you still can today, according to my official government guide to passing the driving test back then. Paragraph 62; Commercial Vehicles. Drivers of light vans or similar vehicles which are only fitted with a driver's seat as standard equipment should bring with them a shallow box or suitable cushion on which the Examiner may seat himself securely during the test.

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really?! Not as much health and safety compared to now!.
      Now examiners MUST wear a high vis jacket if the test centre has a car park they need to walk through, just in case they forgot to check for traffic and get hit.
      Also for a driving test a dual accelerator MUST NOT be fitted just in case the examiner, with 20+ years or driving experience and all the training, accidentally presses the pedal and accelerates the learner and causes a crash.

      @@UKDrivingTest In the 1950's not only was technology behind the times, left hand drive vehicles from the war were common and political correctness had not been thought about. Section 44 Give, by hand and by mechanical means (if fitted to the vehicle) in a clear and unmistakable manner appropriate signals at appropriate times, It is most important that other road users should know what you intend to do. Even if your vehicle is equipped with mechanical devices ("trafficators" or "winkers") you will be required to show that you are competent to use them and give the recognised hand signals, clearly and in good time. (This does not, of course apply if you are a disabled driver with only one arm; if you are driving a vehicle fitted with left-hand-drive. see paragraph 61)

  • @bransolo9469
    @bransolo9469 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    It is best to test your eyesight as well. Best way to do it is to go to an area with lots of parked cars, start off reading the closest then increase the distance from each different cars, you'll therefore find the point on when you're vision is blurring of you didn't make the required distance.
    Also writing it down might help a lot because of your seeing multiple numbers and letters in one spot, write them under each other and circle which one you strongly think it is. Even if you get it wrong, you might have it written as one of the possibility. But obviously that's something to do as a practice because i highly doubt the examiner will let you get away with that.
    Fingers crossed to everyone and I hope for those who fails the plate reading doesn't give up and has the courage to prove anyone who says they can't drive that they're wrong.

    My driving instructor forgot to do a quick eyesight check when I first started lessons.
    About 5-6 lessons in, I realised I had a bit trouble reading a speed limit sign at a distance then booked an eye test as soon as I got home.
    I probably still could've read a number plate at 20-25 meters. My prescription isn't that 'strong'.
    I'm now onto my 11th lesson, and wouldn't imagine driving without glasses.
    ...except maybe for reversing; the frames can get in the way sometimes when I'm looking over the shoulder.
    *Even if you think you can see fine (I thought I did at first), I'd recommend any learner having an eye test. If you're worried about spending the £15 or so for an eye test, opticians tend to have offers for free eye tests.*

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good story, helpful for others.
      In my opinion the legal minimum of 20meters is too little, if you can only jus tread it at 20 meters you can legally drive, but like you I would strongly advise the learner to go to the opticians and get a prescription.
      Also worth noting eyesight can get worst as you get older or due to the job you do. When I passed my test I did not need glasses, but after working in an office for 5 years my eyesight got very bad and needed glasses. It has got a bit worst over the years, but now seems to have settled, currently without glasses I can't read a number plate from 10 meters away! let alone 20.

      If you feel like the examiner has not followed the guidelines and the test was not conducted properly then you could choose to complain.
      www.gov.uk/government/organisations/driver-and-vehicle-standards-agency/about/complaints-procedure
      Remember, although it is rare, if the test was poorly conduction, and not inline with their guidelines, DON'T be afraid to complain, it is vital it is flagged up to stop it happening to others.

    The 20 metres requirement is based on AB12 ABC style number plates, older ABC123X had a longer distance 68 feet (21 metres) and ABC 123 even longer 75 feet (23 metres) as I recall. This is because as the number of characters increased the size of the characters became smaller. Whatever number is used it should not be a personalised number or one which is disproportionately spaced or illegal font. I think single text line as found on cars is normally used.

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes older style number plate is 20.5 meters. But not to reliant anymore as most cars in the UK are from 2001 or newer and as such as the newer style number plates.

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can read road signs then chances are you eyesight is ok.
      But why not just check your eyesight, it's easy enough to do.
      Just find a parked vehicle that is at least 20 meters away, which is about 5 car lengths and see if you can read it clearly. But at first best to over do it, so make sure you are 6 or 7 car lengths away just to be sure, if you can read it from there then no issue, it's the same the examiners do as outlined on this video.

      No pretty sure you don't need to reapply, but should inform the Dvla if your wear glasses so then any future licences will have an '01' code on the back.

    What do you mean by they will let you draw the numberplate or let you write down the plate number? Do you mean that you'll be writing it and they'll accept that if its right ?

    • @UKDrivingTest

      yes exactly, for some with learning difficulties it is easier to draw the letter, rather than speak, for example someone with sever dyslexia who have reading difficulties, but can still copy a shape / symbol.

      Yes, they do take conditions into account, they do not do tests in poor lighting conditions (night time) for this reason, in the rain it should not normally effective your ability to read a numberplate.

      @@UKDrivingTest Ah okay, thanks for confirming. I don't wear glasses as the last time I was tested I had 20/20 in my right eye and maybe 20/40 or so in my left. I know the standard is 20/40 to drive but still a little worried that some guy with 20/5 vision is gonna expect me to read what he can lol. I'll maybe book another eye test to confirm beforehand

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheDas1888 no need to book an eye test if you already had one recently, just find some parked vehicles about 20 meters away and see if you can read them.
      As per video the examiners may ask you to read further than 20 meters to start with, but if you can't (very rare) they will get you close, then if you still can't read they will measure it. so there will never be a case of an examiner over estimating the distance :-)

    I want to know if provisional changes as at moment someone helped me apply for one but it has code 01 that means I need glasses but I only need to use glasses when I look at the screen/monitor
    Anyone know?

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would not worry about it, many people have an 01 on their licence but then actually no longer need glasses, maybe they have had laser surgery. Or often the other way around, no 01 code, but need glasses as eyesight has got worst with age.
      The main thing is:
      You MUST be able to read a numberplate from at least 20 metres away, using corrective eyewear if needed.

    When I applied for my provisional license I ticked the box saying my eyes were fine without glasses, now I’ve been doing my lessons I’ve noticed that I can’t / struggle reading it, will I have to completely get a new license or will I be able to wear glasses on my driving test and get a new one then with 01 code on it?

    • @jacc8588

      As in I won’t need to reapply now for a new provisional

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would just advise the DVLA that you now wear glasses and go from there.
      It is likely they will just acknowledge that and say you don't need a new licence with a 01 code, but next time you change you licence, say when you pass or move address, then the 01 code will be added.

      @@rejiplayz5779 hmm, interesting.
      Technically it does no matter what the optician as if you can't read a number plate from at least 20 meters then you can't drive, even if the optician says you eyesight is perfect.
      Have you tried different number plates? Perhaps you find it easier to read a white number plate or a yellow one, perhaps the number plate is in bad light so difficult to read?
      I suspect on test if you had to move you glasses out to read the number plate the examiner would say something.

      If you can't really a number plate at 20 meters your eyesight is REALLY REALLY bad, and you 100% should not be driving.
      Personally the minimum requirement should be higher, for example for a driving instructor it is 26.5 meters, I feel this would be more appropriate for ALL drivers
