I'm currently working for a degree in animation & motion graphics. I'm taking a digital photography course this term and I have been watching your videos instead of the lectures provided by my professor to learn techniques. You have such a warm and approachable presentation in all of your videos and they are so engaging and easy to follow! You are a natural teacher and I am so grateful to have found this channel. Keep up the excellent work!
Usually, I see this type of video, and it is either ridiculously difficult or overly simplistic. This clip taught me something valuable. Simple without being simplistic. Thank you for the most instructive three minutes and fifty seconds ever! Highlt recommended!
phlearn teaches the way I wish my instructors taught when I was in graphic design and web design back in the day. I'm getting back into photoshop after a long stint errr, it has been a while. I do think that all the tutorials should be grouped but none the less these are fantastic and the teaching style is the best I've come across. God Bless
Awesome job thank you.Perfectly explained. I now use Vibrance and tool and Selective Colour with this exact same technique. The Brush tool is activated using B key on your keyboard and the brush can be made smaller/bigger using the square bracket keys on the keyboard.
This channel is awesome. I'm in the middle of retouching an image and needed to get some quick information about dodge & burn. Here it is quick, thorough, and perfect. Thank you Phlearn.
Nice, slow and detailed. I was able to write down all my notes, edit your sample image and two of mine in under four minutes .... even had time for a coffee. Great work Aaron
I like that idea very much, Aaron. However, the "Apply Image" is destructive to the mask, meaning that if you need to modify your dodge and burn masks after you have "applied" the image, you would get irregularities in the mask. I tried your technique, but instead of applying the image to the mask I used a "Blend If" for the curves adjustment layer. When I spread the black (or the white) cursor for the underlying image across the entire spectrum, I seem to get a very similar results, albeit without overwriting the mask.
@@chiditv4617 blend if applies the mask as a function of the underlying image brightness. This allows you to modify the dodging and burning region after the fact. Here is another excellent video by Aaron on the topic: th-cam.com/video/3GKDBXrpV8s/w-d-xo.html
So everything was good till I wanted to paint... mmm after changing from white to black I just had my moving tool active, which tool do you use to paint for this specific action? Thanks great videos man keep it up.
Dodge and burn tools are very useful and I like using them a lot for my designs on my TH-cam videos. Another great video by Phlearn!! Happy new year everyone!! 🌟🥳 😁
Thanks for this. I haven't thought about using Apply Image on a mask like that before. I think I would have defaulted to using the Blend-If sliders, since those would allow me to refine how much of the shadows/highlights to ignore a little better.
This video is so brief, it's not clear to us what the Apply Image is doing. Is it only applying the dodge curve to the lighter areas and the burn curve to the darker areas? How is that threshold determined? I guess this is okay for global dodges and burns, but not so useful when you want to apply variations to localized areas. How would that be done?
Thank you for the video, however I don't understand why you had to use the 'Apply Image' options to the photo. How does that help, could you pls explain? Thanks.
MrFrankdoll thank you. Also I notice most ppl use light room first before going to photoshop. Do u fix the skin, dnb then go to Lightroom to edit your colors?
Chu Udoh typically Lightroom is where I start. Adjusting highlights shadows etc... maybe some minor color changes. People also use camera raw before photoshop. Photoshop has the capability of doing everything you can do in Lightroom. Lightroom is just convenient because of file organization

You can take this a step further by using the UnderLying Layer slider and blending in the adjustments.
Hey Aron! Happy new year. Your content is really amazing.

Hi Haron! , do you use wacom med or small tablet? Say hello from Costa Rica!,
May I ask what graphics tablet you are using and if you find it a good product?
you just SAVED my photo
glad we were able to help!
Thank you for the video, however I don't understand why you had to use the 'Apply Image' options to the photo. How does that help, could you pls explain? Thanks.
thank you so much omg
You're tutorials are so awesome, easy to learn from, thank you.
Hello. That very cool. I wonder if I could do something like that in my photo editor. Thanks
Thank you ! Long tutorials can be a bit confusing at time, this just goes right at the essentials
you the best
How does that differ from processing the RAW image and doing only highlights or blacks (or similar) etc. ?
What kind of tablet are you using to control the software?
Hey there! Aaron uses Intuos Pro tablet
Thank you :)
Thank you for the best tips ever Aaron :-)
do i dodge and burn before or after frequency seperation

I would have liked to see this on a portrait
Can you use this technique just on the face to boost highlights?
for once he gets right to the point good video
This one made me subscribe. Perfectly explained!
I had a question. Do you do Dodge & Burn after you have fixed the colors and retouched the images or before?
Chu Udoh typically I retouch skin, dnb (local and global), lastly do color corrections and sharpen
MrFrankdoll thank you. Also I notice most ppl use light room first before going to photoshop. Do u fix the skin, dnb then go to Lightroom to edit your colors?
