  • Howling roaring noise while driving? Follow along as I take you through the steps I used to troubleshoot and replace a failing wheel bearing.
    This is a press fit style bearing, as simple as it may sound many will fail shortly after replacing or not last nearly as long as original. This is mostly due to improper pressing techniques.
    Today I will share a couple methods that should help eliminate any concerns from hear on out. Hope you enjoy.

      Yeah this is one of the best videos that I have seen so far and really don't have to do much to the car's wheel bearings if you have any more footage on wheel bearings and specially rear wheel bearings on the same similar car I would most appreciate it

    I want to thank you. 11:09 when you described that you "can push on that center race" to press out the bearing. I was worried that pushing on the inside would just pop and I'd be stuck digging out the rest of it. This video gave me the confidence in the correct procedure and I was able to complete the same procedure on my 2003 Kia Optima.

    You have just saved this single Mom her wallet. In the last few years I’ve been noticing the mechanics hiking the prices to unreasonable levels. They note a totally different price to a friend of mine (whom be male).
    This year I’ve replaced my brake pads and rotors, service and a few Cosmetics. Saved soooo much money. This video is about to save me more. Thank you so much!

    Great Video, very detailed, you are a good instructor. My 2005 Kia Sedona has a bad front bearing, Called around to see how much this would cost, I received quotes from $700 to $900. Thanks to your video, you inspired me to do this job myself. Hopefully you will have more KIA repair videos in the future.

    I've watched this video 5 times going on 6. It's a fun vid and I just replace the front wheel bearings on our 2005 Toyota Avalon and it's very similar. After watching this I ordered the Astro 1823.

    Sounds exactly like my Kia Soul. I’m a jack of all trades master of none. Thought it was my brakes and after rebuilding calipers and replacing pads I still had the same sounds. This video only confirms my suspicion.

    We have the same model/year van - A few months back the right front started to squeak on deceleration. Thinking it was the pads, I replaced those however the squeak did not go away. Now its gone mostly to a growl like the video. There's a 2004 Sedona at the pick-a-part lot which if I can get tools id get the knuckle and hub off it. Thanks for this video, I know it will help when I need to follow along and replace etc.

    I sure like your press, with a single column giving lots of room all the way around your base. New presses aren't like that. I really like the technique you used here, with no need to accidentally score the shaft when a cutting wheel slips. Apparently many wheel bearings don't have enough of a shelf to support the bearing splitter.

    • @robinsonsauto
      @robinsonsauto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      spelunkerd thank you, that press has been very good to me over the years. Made by "Ward" I'm not sure of it's age however I know it's over 13 it came from a alternator and starter rebuild shop that closed up, I haven't seen another like it before or after. I'm sure they are out there. this splitter don't always do the trick, so yes I have a fair share of scarred hubs on the road 😁 glad it worked out this time. Thanks for stopping by. It's always a pleasure

    Well done bud. Love that lil press you got there. I finally got fed up with my light situation and have ordered that same light the other day after a car project that needed to be done. Hope its all cracked up to be like everyone says.

    • @robinsonsauto
      @robinsonsauto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Longtrailside thank you for the compliment and feedback, I will be completely honest, im not one to sell make believe and I sure the heck would not want to buy make believe either! All I can say is this was my first repair since the new addition, most tools not even broke in yet, I can say at full power on that light it latest the whole repair, in which took longer due to capturing extra details. around the 3rd hour I did notice some diming however still brighter than my snap on 3rs in, my old light was dead 30 minutes in. so this is a big win for me so far. I will do my best to report back any changes.

    • @Longtrailside
      @Longtrailside 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's good good to hear about the longevity of the light. I have seen Eric O from SMA beat the pizzwizzle out of his astro tools and they have held up extremely well. A lot of other mechanics have been buying the astro light so i'm excited to try it out. Would love to get the astro BIGNASTY air hammer down the road. Oh by the way hows the new shop workin for ya?

    Nice video & repair Will! I use the OTC 6575 Hub Grappler Kit and the OTC 6575-3 Hydraulic Kit which uses a hydraulic ram instead of the jackscrew so if the hyd unit were to fail I'd have the jackscrew as a backup if I was mobile. It removes/installs the hub also and has a puller for the inner bearing race but I usually end up using the same method you used or cutting it off but I've also had good luck grinding notches and using the puller. I usually do it on the car but like you said if in the shop you can sometimes do it just as fast with the press. You touched on all the critical points...great job Will!!

    • @robinsonsauto
      @robinsonsauto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hayward's Automotive I will definitely look into that setup! Thank you for sharing all this helpful insight as I'm certain it will help someone along the way. I like your press...pretty cool!

    I have found that a freezer and a toaster oven will help remove most of the stress when pressing things together.
    A hundred watt bulb and an aluminum light reflector will warm things that can't go in the oven. Canned air upside down will spay things nice and cold that can't go in a freezer.

    hello will glad to see a new vid out today. i have many astro tools myself and i love them. did u end up getting a tank from feldmier. i was curious what u need one of their tanks for. most of the stuff they do is specialty tanks for all sorts of different industrial uses. some of the tanks that i see come out of that place are amazing and usually very expensive. anyways thanks for the vid have a good day buddy

I went out with a team to inspect a tank being fabricated. Large surge tank

      robinsonsauto I do the exact same thing, one tip though:
      Use an old serp belt around the slide hammer to save your hands and apply more force!!

    Excellent video on how to press bearings. Could you have done everything on the bench with the wheel bearing tool from Astro? I dont have a nice press that you have. thanks.

    only thing I seen wrong, you wasn't bleeding everywhere! I always obliterate myself and leave a trail of blood everywhere on wheel bearings :))

    Great video. I have a 2005 Kia Sedona and had the wheel bearing replaced several times at a local repair shop. They must be damaging the bearing on the install b/c they keep going out. Additionally, It seems like there should be an outer seal and/or something to retail the proper pre-load on the bearing. Torquing the axle nut only compresses the spindle (hub?) and it seems the bearing will then separate while driving. I am at wits end on my 2005 Sedona and ready to take it to the scrap yard. I cannot keep haing the bearing replace every 2 months.

    Really enjoy your video's, straight and to the point. I heard you mention a Cornwell socket, do you know anyone with a Cornwell toolbox in your area? Not too popular near me, but I like the Custom series.

    Was wondering, when you torque everything down, should the weight of the vehicle be on the components you are torquing or am i getting my wires crossed?
    Excellent video though.

    I am new to bearing replacement, I have a 2006 Kia Sportage, can I just buy a hub assembly and replace the front wheel hub instead of pressing it out of the knuckle?

    Please, can worn-out or bad inner cv joint cause ABS light on? I asked because immediately I changed the cv axle joint, I began to hear like cracking nose. Please, what could be the problem? KIA CARNIVAL 2005 2.5l petrol automatic.

    I just now watched the video on October 8th, 2019 (it still is great information). One thing though. While espousing the value of having the disc "dished" out - to avoid pre-loading - when it was used at 17:25 of the video, the dish side appeared to be facing outwards and not leaving that space for the inner race. Did I miss something here? or is it just the camera angle?

    99% of the time ni do press in wheel bearings that race stays on the hub and i either use a puller if possible to get it off. or a torch. sometime u can grind a couple notches it the race so u can get a puller t grab it. learned that from an sma vid. dont work every time but still a good trick

    NANO For the winnnn!!! Hey check out the Braun work light at harbor freight...I have gotten 6 or so of them and passed them out as gifts.....I like it better than the Nano light and it's about $30.00 at Harbor Freight, I am not a big pusher of H.F. but the light rocks it.
