Perhaps, as the name implies, the allure of this fragrance is not immediately apparent, but rather emerges as a deep understanding and appreciation over time of “cutting” through extended wear?
I've had this for a few weeks now, the NYC boutique got it in early. I really like it, I can see how it will be divisive as it is very unabashedly synthetic, but to me it doesn't smell designer or like anything else I've smelled before. I find the smell quite warm and addictive and multifaceted. To me it's synthetic in more of a daring way like CDG might be, not synthetic like typical designer ambroxan. I like how it feels at once warm, fresh, sweet, woody, resinous without going too much in any one direction. The U.S. retail is more than I would pay but the EU discount makes it more palatable to me. It is also quite strong and lasts a long time so a little goes a long way.

I love it, this is my personal Aventus. Good casual everyday all year frag. I agree its nothing too special but it fills that spot ive been looking for in my collection.
From Portrait of a lady,Musc Ravageur, Carnal Flower and the Desert Gems we went to Uncut Gem and Synthetic Jungle.
I have a lot of fragrances to buy in my list that I'm skipping the ones that are not "Fantastic" or at least "very good", I know it' depends on each person's taste to like it or not, but that's why I watch reviews and then try a sample or buy it if I find it interesting, but after your take on it I'm not going to bother. I really hope this is just a one off and not the direction that Frederic Malle is headed from now on. Certain other releases (Cologne Indelible, Cologne Bigarade etc) have been criticised as well for being unoriginal or unexciting, so I’m hoping this is just another “blip” and we get some better releases from here.
your channel becomes far more interesting when you also post about the duds that you come across.
You know what else is a dud? Cherry Oud by Guerlain. Sounded so good but hated it! :(

A great ginger fragrance for men. Apparently and checking for years your reviews, you are more to sweet/ambery/ even feminine scents. That's your preference, fully respected but this perfume is fantastic for what has been made to be. Niche companies should not be only for sweet/ambery/rosey and incensy notes.
I notice a trend lately with very safe and boring releases from brands that would usually have bolder and daring offerings. I'm thinking of Tom Fords, Maison Francis Kurkdjian, Frederic Malle etc. Could this be a reflection of the pandemic, how the market became scared? Like they all want to play it safe because their revenue droped?

Actually the pandemic was great for the fragrance market. It seems like it really actually boosted the revenue of a lot of companies...

Yeah, Maurice Roucel’s second fragrance with Frederic Malle was Dans Tes Bras. That’s my favorite fragrance of all time, and I think it’s criminally underrated. I would love to hear your opinion on it

Thank you for reviewing this fragrance. I don’t own any Frederic Malle perfumes, but I ordered their samples. Portrait of a Lady and Iris Poudre are beautiful. I will definitely add them to my collection. I don’t have a nice Iris perfume except for Gris Dior( I like it a lot).
Are you going to review Paragon by Initio? It is a new release in their Hedonist collection.

I enjoy the ginger note in this a lot...but it does not last on me which is a shame for the price. If it lasted longer I would rate it a lot higher. I agree 100% on the "designer" comment. Smells very familiar.

If indeed this one is a D&G The One expensive clone like people on Fragrantica are pointing out, I see houses like Dior, Prada, Versace etc. doing it (all those have a BdC blue clone/take for example), not Cartier or Hermes that are not following trends and are releasing quite unique fragrances. It's a shame that uber expensive niche houses are playing the imitation game. Cheers!
A question to ponder about: why aren't the releases from Frederic Mall -or from any niche artistic brand really-that aren't complex or avant garde come with a lower price tag?

You weren't under any obligation to buy that fragrance. Between these two fragrances that include angelica, "Uncut Gem" and Prada "Luna Rossa Black", which do you think is the better fragrance. I know that I like "Luna Rossa Black" (I'm not under the impression that they're similar to each other, though).

Haven't smelt this one yet but am disappointed to hear it's not great or interesting! I only have a few FM's but even the scents I wouldn't wear I still find bold and interesting. I agree, the name is amazing!

Interesting. Sad that it didn’t turn out to be what we expect from FM but thanks for the review. At least it gives us some idea from a relatable source while still unavailable for sniff here :)
I ended up not liking this one after sampling.
I am enjoying other FM’s - would you say Carnal Flower, Lys Mediterranee, and Synthetic Jungle are redundant to each other?
I don't think they are redundant but they do all use white flowers. If you think that's redundant then yes but they are so different to me.

@@ThePerfumeGuy - Uncut Gem is sadly the first fragrance to make me nauseous. There is something about the way the citrus, leather, and musky accords together that didn’t work well for me. I have Musc Ravageur and Labdanum 18 and I far prefer those from Roucel.
I see. Roucel does have some great scents but Uncut Gem isn't it sadly. MR is probably my favorite of his. Even Matcha Meditation was better than Uncut Gem! :)

I thought it was shelved and they decided to re-release it. Maybe I’m wrong.
I had the chance to smell it in June in Paris at Le Vestiaire du Monsieur and I HATED IT. Obviously it's not a bad fragrance because Monsieur Roucel put a lot of effort into it but it was not my cup of tea. Too leathery for me and the nutmeg was very overpowering...And I am not someone afraid of neither spicy or leathery notes. It just didn't live up to the expectations at all.

It's based on Mr. Roucel's personal fragrance and depending on when he developed his personal fragrance it makes sense it would seem designer. I'm a fan of his fragrances and can't wait to experience it. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find it here yet.

I've smelled it last week and the first thought that came to mind was that it seemed similar to Synthetic jungle, but a bit more citrusy and spicy. Of course Synthetic jungle has many flowers, but it is also a green and aromatic fragrance. Uncut gem is very citrusy though and has some spices, but I didn't smell any leather or particular note that stood out. It is not my type of fragrance, so I wouldn't buy it.

It's a very disappointing scent. But I would still try it.
I enjoyed the ginger as I love it. it’s over priced and to linear it seems muddled as well. Real shame. I liked the advertising catered to the masculine market A woman can wear it

Do you know what plant part of the cistus is fragrant? I work around a few different ones and with neither I detect any smell...
I believe there are varieties. I smell such fragrance with some and some completely odorless. I'll have to find out the varieties. There are some that are so fragrant especially in the fall the air is filled with the aroma of the plant.

I've not smelled it, so I can't comment but I find all Frederic Malle fragrances very overpriced. The only one I own is Musc Ravageur.
If unimpressed why get the 100? There is a 50ml...
You think visually the 50ml looks as good as the 100ml?

I knew it! It's a mature version of ego stratis by JHAG. Both freshie-centric citrus/aromatic/musk. Some may disagree with my take on the relation between the two but anyway..... I think the hype was in the name and the fact Malle does do some lovely scents.
Musc ravageur is my swinger party fragrance
Maybe one day people will see the light on sorry fragrances that cost way to much.

It not boring fragrance, it very masculine and brutal. The only reason why Sebastian not kike it because Sebastian loves male perfumes with feminine base.
Oh yeah! That's why I love 70s, 80s and 90s Fougeres and Chypres! Because they have a feminine base! WTF kind of a comment is this? Annoying as hell!
And to be honest I can show you brutal! Uncut Gem has no brutal note in it! ;)

You’re so wrong on this one! I think it’s stunning.
It is truly ghastly. All the dreaded woody amber ambergris fixative bases that I am weary of, ruthlessly pummeling my head. An absolute travesty.
I blind bought this before the first reviews even dropped. It's okay. Nothing really special. I don't hate it but as you say, it doesn't belong with Frederic Malle, it's too safe and conventional.
It's pleasant but I feel like I've been here before with many other fragrances. You could wear this to the office. It's safe and, (curiously for FM) quite predictable.
I only picked this up because I knew it was the perfumer responsible for MR. A bit disappointing. Can't see this becoming the legend that MR is. I should probably give it a little more time but first impressions are underwhelming.
For this price, I expect something a little more unique, alluring and (given the perfumer) sexy.
It was the most exciting and promising fragrance (for me) this year. It's also the most disappointing.
I think one thing to note here is Sebastian has lost objectivity. He has a profile he likes having sniff thousands of perfumes unlike a normal buyer like us. This scent is like Original Vetiver without the vetiver and remember Sebastian doesn’t even have Original Vetiver in his top 13 Creed scents let alone any other ranking. Sebastian does a lot of great reviews but you have to take them with a grain of salt because he can’t be impressed like you and I can and at the end of the day we’re wearing fragrances for us not him.

Why did you buy the large bottle? You could have bought the smaller one or the travel. Sounds like the price is not worth it to you at any size but you can easily review this without the large bottle and didn’t have to pay all that.

I despise it. How they dared to release this trash is beyond me. It smells like they put every availabe base material found in modern designer masculines together and called it a day. The listed notes are completly made up.
