In this video I am going over why my store had the success it did in my first calendar year. After starting the store in September of 2019 from Jan 1 to Dec 31 of 2020 we did hit over 945k in revenue NOT Profit.
This video is for beginners just starting out or Etsy store owners looking to get some insight on how to increase revenue. This is the first of many Etsy value videos I will be making, I have been super nervous about making this transition on to youtube full time, but I know my bigger purpose is helping other aspiring entrepreneurs.

Tip! When you send a little card that ask for a review. Add a QR code to make it that much easier for the customer to add a review. This concept aligns with a “customer journey map” this will help the efficiency on your business.

For the regular people who don’t have TH-cam channels. Patience is key, just because you don’t make a million your first year doesn’t mean you will never get there. You can do it too.
For sure love that ! I mention this a lot in my TH-cam channel it is one major theme of my entire channel, even though this brand hit 1 million the first year I’ve been in entrepreneurship with many many many failures for 2 to 3 years before this, I learned by falling on my face many many times

Of course, not knocking courses, people need them! I just like that you focused on the meaty stuff. This is a success story and no mistake; having said that, your timing was 👌. People went NUTS with spending during the pandemic, so opening a store at that time was genius. As a buyer, I personally hate duplicated SKU’s because it requires me a sh*t ton of time comparing descriptions to make sure I’m getting what I want

This video changed my life I was stressing about trying to get my first 200 listings and your idea to duplicate is amazing! The only thing I see you suggested I wouldn’t do is to respond to the negative review because it will lock that review and the customer can’t change it. You want to give your customer a chance to change the negative review to a more positive review. I would say if the customer just refuses to change then respond to the actual review.

I think the star seller badge is--or has become--important. When I'm looking for a specific product on Etsy, my preference is to search within the star seller shops. I know the item I ordered will be exactly as described, and it will arrive within the specified timeframe. In the rare instance that there is a glitch, the shop owner will *always* respond to a question within 24 hours. A couple of other tips that will encourage a customer like me to return to your shop are: (1) package items well for safe shipping; (2) *always* include a small thank-you note; and (3) offer a discount to encourage repeat purchases.
Be careful. Many sellers are buying their shipping labels early. To Etsy, it looks like it's being shipped on time, but in reality, it ends up sitting in pretransit far past the shipping date. This is happening often, unfortunately.
I must say, I am impressed! The information you share is very in depth, you are so much more comprehensive with your tutorial than anyone else I've seen that does this type of educational content. Bravo! And you have a non-condescending way of speaking....yay!

I want to say thank-you so much for being to the point at the very beginning and transparent in saying you earned that in revenue, and it's not profit. So many videos advertise how they're a million dollar business, but in reality that's not their profit.

Wonderful video, 8 years ago I made and sold decorative wagon wheels and was very successful, but unfortunately I had to close shop because of too many orders and with that said, 100% of sales had in return a solid 5 star rating, nothing less. I did this all without paying for anything extra and I believe with a 5 star rating which helped drove in traffic. I wish you much success and keep up the good work! I plan on doing this again and have designed a new wagon wheel product that's still not out there on the market. Much success to everyone!

It's refreshing for someone to actually say revenue is not profit. So many of the YT videos out there only boast of revenue. Many people who are starting a business for the first time don't understand the difference or it does not yet cross their mind that revenue is not profit.

Great point on number three! Something I heard a long time ago that stuck with me is the more "BUY" buttons you have in your store, the more chances of making a sale(s). So particularly at launch, it is a great idea to have an array of designs and products for your potential customers to see. It gives your potential customer s a clear picture of what you are about and what your style is. And even if these are things that may be changed or tweaked later, you want to make sure that you look legit when a customer walks through your virtual door for the very first time. It's cliche but a first impression is everything!
I also want to thank you for your info. I am so pleased and excited to have found your channel and videos! Trust me when I say I have seen about content creator and list of suggestions regarding pod on TH-cam as well as virtual course creators and sellers and I constantly find that I'm hearing the same suggestions over and over. You have given me things that I have never heard and never considered before. And that is truly exciting! Although some of the things you're saying seems so basic, it's still extremely valuable! It's almost like it's things I should have already known because every point you've made made perfect sense. Yes you can let the keyword sit for 3 to 4 weeks to see if they really get traction.
You can also duplicate the listing and run two listings against each other that have slightly different tags

The problem with ads is that if you start using them then you can't stop, it's like the algorithm notices when you stop and stops showing your listings, even ones that were showing up organically. (Not 100% sure about this but saw a couple of sellers say this 🤔)
I agree but unfortunately if you don’t use them at all you won’t be able to compete with your competition and won’t make nearly what you could

I remember when Etsy was a fun place where artists sold art work. What a sad dystopian world we live in.
I feel like there is still a lot of that on there, we still make everything in house but have scaled out our systems but yes as market places get saturated this is going to happen in business and it forces us to build better ones. We have a choice to optimize and become more competitive or get drowned out. But I would still say it is not as bad as amazon, there are still many creators on the platform doing very well.

Its all just so inflated and full of low quality crap so people can have side hussles. Its not your fault, its just the world we live in thanks to coorperate greed. Awesome stuff, SKU stands for stock keeping unit it is a unique identification code you give each product, do not worry as I have a SKU generator I am coming out with for free :]
Revenue means nothing . Profit is the only number that matters
For sure! Not really the point of the video, the value is in the strategy and methods I am teaching for your own business. My numbers don’t really help your own store in any way only meant to inspire what is possible. We ran a 32% profit margin that year before employee wages and taxes. But as mentioned don’t get caught up in others peoples numbers does not benefit your own business focus on the strategies and doing the work :)
I wish you would've started number 4 by giving the definition of "SKU" and explaining what it is. I googled it but I still don't quite understand and it sounds like an important part of the process. Other than that your explanations are impeccable. Very helpful. Thanks 🦋
SKU is a Stock Keeping Unit identification number you can make up and give to your product listings in the back end of your products. SKUs do a lot of things for your tracking and bookkeeping of your inventory :]
@@EcomHannah Do they have much benefit apart from tracking inventory on the seller's side? As in, does having a SKU for your product help it become more visible in Etsy searches? (I sell digital products, but have never used them before). And as for joining them up for duplicate listings, I'm guessing this means more listings = more traffic/views to your store? :)
@@MP281196 If you are selling digital goods and have no need to track inventory then no you do not need a SKU system it is really only for bookkeeping and inventory tracking purpose but if you have no money tied up in inventory than it does not matter for you :]

Another big earner on Etsy has only 65 items and 1 bundle, so only 6 listings total. She's in a very competitive niche in general but she positioned her items in a sub niche and she's doing really well. So quantity isn't the answer for everyone.

For sure! Totally agree and totally depending on the niche. That’s exactly why the video is “How I did… xyz” not “Hot to do …. Xyz” I can only share things from my experience and add value through what worked for me. Absolutely does not mean it will work for every niche as competition varies, search volume varies, price point etc there are many variables that exist for different niches :) which is great that you pointed out because that’s a huge thing people must understand coming into the space. because it worked for one niche does not mean it will it will 100 % work for another

Awesome video and great content! Quick question regarding "ads". You mentioned having a "minimum" of 50 SKUs, and you also mention paying for a *minimum* of $5/day for advertising (at least in the beginning). Is it necessary to spend $5/day per SKU? Or would the $5/day ad rate cover your entire Etsy store? And congratulations on your success! 🙂
The 5$ a day covers your whole store. I guess technically you can pick and choose what items in your store are included in the ads

What is your etsy shop? It seems you intentionally aren't sharing it. Why would you prefer to not share your etsy shop in your videos? Is it bad for the etsy shop in some reason to do this? Why would someone do the same and not share theirs? Thanks!
I mean I am a later 6 figure seller I would NEVER share my shop name so a bunch of people could steal my stuff!
Yes I would say most Etsy youtubers that care about their brands or still running successful ones tend to not share because you are basically asking for your entire store to get ripped off, it only takes a handful of horrible people to steal your images straight from your shop before your own store starts getting blamed for stealing :/ even though you were the creator
maybe you should also let ppl know that PPC charges them 15% on the sales made through it. So if someone clicks on the ad and buys the product they will be charged for that transaction 15%

I agree that being present in your Etsy account is helpful. Do you think having multiple variants in a listing is a good way to increase exposure?

Although you acknowledge that these are your sales figures and not profits - you could conceivably be making very little (if any) profit ...
Not really the point of the video and you may be missing the real value I share my numbers to inspire. Pay attention to the strategy and what i am teaching that’s what’s really important for your own business. That year we ran a 35% profit margin before taxes and employees. Focus on things that are important for you business and putting in the work and you’ll get there ;) you got this

Why would you admonish me for trying to understand if your strategies yield financially sound results? It's important for my business that I evaluate strategies before deciding whether to adopt them. An operating profit margin would have been a more helpful figure but thank you for some disclosure.

That’s true about selling 10 years ago. My aunt sells antiques on Etsy and she says you used to be able to list anything and it would sell and now there’s too much competition. I sell supplies and there’s tons of people selling supplies. I know I need to list more items. One item I sell is seasonal so hopefully I still get sales after the holiday is over. I also want to find something else to sell as well because a $3 supply doesn’t make a lot of money.
Was a star seller for one month and then they said I didn’t answer a message in time which I did but I only get a couple a month(even though they say it may take up to 72 hours for them to answer and I was answering on the weekends) so I started screenshotting them in case that happened again. 😀 I didn’t notice any difference in sales having star seller or not. But I’m selling supplies so probably different for other categories.
Having more items will definitely help and yes etsy is getting more strict on that 24 hour reply thing, super hard for some stores :/ even mine. All apart of the ecom game though!
@@EcomHannah I see some people in my category that have like over 2000 listings, I don’t see how they can photograph and list all those items with tags and titles and everything. It takes so long to do all that.

That's a great video ! I like the way you emphasize the figures are Sales and not Profits (unlike other videos). The practical guidelines were good too, like the advice of keep posting products, competitor research, EverBee, etc

I run multiple brands and my main one specifically takes up 24 hours a day of my time. When you say to have at least 50 listings, do you recommend listing 50 all at once, or only listing one a day until you reach 50 listings?
Also, once the areas to input information are filled, and the item descriptions and branding are to your liking, how do you "stay active" every day without reviews to answer or items to ship? Would logging in suffice?
does not have to be all at once just keep launching and testing new listings as you make them. Stay active meaning, updating listings, testing new main images, answering customer service, fulfilling orders fast, testing new ways of bundling your items
