A technicolor orchestra. That third movement and that clarinet solo.... One of my favorite passages of any piece. Beautiful performance of this masterpiece!

The first time I heard this was when I watched Fantasia 2000 in an Imax theater as a child. I vividly remember the whales and my awed state.
In highschool I performed Pines of Rome in the MN All-State orchestra as a hornist and I'll never forget the overwhelm of awe returned the first time we ran through it as a group.
The beginning of the final movement forming all around me was so powerful that I couldn't even play for a moment --a teacher sitting with us pointed out the measure we were on, thinking me lost when he saw me not playing, but when he saw the look in my eye he let me alone cuz he could tell what I was going through 😆

Il merito va ad Ottorino Respighi e solo a lui.
Continuare, per ogni cosa, a ringraziare un Dio che, nelle forme espresse dalla religione, dovrebbe essere chiaro che non esiste, lo trovo volgare ed ingiusto.

That brief piano solo at about 10:00 astonishes us with its rightness, somehow. This music is profoundly enticing; it leads us to an understanding of the value of great forests. I don't mean that in an political sense -- only in an aesthetic sense. Respighi wanted us to feel that sense of things. And he fully succeeds here.

I would pay to see a column of shiny armoured legionaries marching through the appian way as the ground thunders under the the unending steps of proudful romans as one great and majestic mass triumphantly parading under the watch of all the citizens. Then the buccinae start roar with fearsome bright tune and the Legatus presents himself wearing the ceramonial raiment and salutes the plebes on a golden chariot with the banners of the roman signifers and the veterans at the head of the centuries. That is the epic feeling this piece evokes.

Yes, from it's premier in 1925. Respighi had a gramaphone recording made of, specifically, a nightingale singing in the Janiculum park described in that third movement in the pre-dawn hours, and it was played in the symphony hall during it's debut.
