Imagine being in the absolute prime of your life - 21 years old, going to school at Stanford to study Mechanical Engineering, playing sports for hours on end…and then, ABRUPTLY, it comes to a screeching halt when you are diagnosed with not one, not two, but three autoimmune diseases within a matter of months.
Today’s guest, Cyrus Khambatta, went from “soccer stud” to “chronic disease patient” in the blink of an eye when he was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, alopecia, and Type 1 diabetes in 2002.
Determined to understand everything he could about these diagnoses, especially his diabetes, he went back to school to learn the science, earning a Ph.D. in nutritional biochemistry from UC Berkeley. In 2020, he and his business partner, Robby Barbaro, co-authored the book, Mastering Diabetes: The Revolutionary Method to Reverse Insulin Resistance Permanently in Type 1, Type 1.5, Type 2, Prediabetes, and Gestational Diabetes.
An educated person is an empowered person and that’s our goal for today - to arm you with as much knowledge, research, and hope that you can master your diabetes with a whole foods plant-based diet that, yes, includes plenty of carbohydrates and rich diversity of luscious fruit.
He may have a Ph.D., but today he’s here to help you master your diabetes.

I am 54. An athlete, former competitive athlete, healthy eater, non meat eater. Diagnosed today as pre-diabetic. Have been feeling so many symptoms that Dr. Khambatta had but clearly less severe. No doctor has ever talked to me about it. I look tall and lean but my body is not reflecting this. Scary but this talk is giving me some hope. Thank you.

I've moved to comment. I'm still confused how I became insulin resistant, but 2019 blood test showed an A1c of 5.9 after some weird nerve sensation in my leg. I was well on my way with no clue. Doc suggested low carb diet. I jumped on the keto bandwagon and lost 30 lb down to ideal weight of 170 lb within a few months. Transitioned to Mediterranean for almost a year and stayed at the same weight. But got sucked back into keto and intermittent fasting because of claims of alztimers prevention and my A1C stayed right at 5.4-5.6. Way to close to the 5.7 prediebetes to be comfortable. So I thought keto would do this if I was strict. And I was. Felt pretty good honestly. Good health metrics except my A1C did not budge and my LDL-C went from 80s to 170s. My wife watched a vegan show that suggested fat was the cause of insulin resistance. I started, but just could not believe it. Seems so odd and extreme honestly. Fat caused high blood sugar. LOL.
Cyrus and Robbie on Rick Roll had me hook where I could not turn the channel. This fat blocking insulin receptors from working made sense. I scared me because I had been eating high fat (fairly low animal fat, but really high nut fat that has saturated component but did get hooked on keto bombs with high sat fat) for 18 months. My system was saturated with fat literally with the high LDL. Luckily my extreme exercise burned a lot of fat in ketosis so I did not gain weight, but my liver enzyme did rise and I had some proof that extreme keto did nothing for my A1C.
So I begged my doc for a CGM script only two weeks ago. I learned that after 18 months of keto, the first apple in years spiked my blood sugar to 180 in 30 min. This was less than a week ago. I should note that after every carb meal I'm walking, lifting weights, surfing or riding a bike since my CGM. After just a few days now the spikes are smaller and rebound to lower blood glucose than I ever measured during keto. I was on a 36 hour fast and my blood glucose would be close to 100. I just had a cup of blueberries and it peaked quick to 120 and dropped quick to 93. I have noticed that over the last week, my nightime numbers are getting better. Last night I was in the 70s for over 3 hours. Below 90 for 6 sleeping hours. My average glucose a week ago was 115. Yesterday it was 101, but coupled with 4 hours of surfing over two sessions.
And walking after a meal. Wow. Get a CGM. It will change your life. I found in the last week that a walk 30 min after eating is a miracle blood sugar eraser. Completely blunts and reverses any increase in blood sugar instantly and actually pushes you lower. Mine was just hitting 145 after a carb meal at lunch today as I started walking. In 30 min it was down to 86. The spike only lasted 5-10 min and all that blood glucose was forced into muscle cells.
One other thing. I can tell my body fat has dropped in the last two weeks by veins I've never seen. I was lean before, but just carbing up and exercising afterwards has set my metabolism on fire. I'm actually worried of getting too thin, but hope I'm able to eat more to find the right balance.

How do we get our current doctors to realize some of their recommendations are not helping us? I wish I could find a way for my general physician to see this video for issues unrelated to me directly. I will probably give him a copy of "Mastering Diabetes" during my next and last physical with him. In 2018 my former doctor in the same clinic recommended statins for my high cholesterol. Fortunately, a relative of mine introduced Rip's father's book. I avoided statins by choosing a WFPB lifestyle. My test results surprised my physician so you'd think that alone would make him challenge his current views.
Rip, thanks for providing incredible insight with your selection of subject matter experts. Dr. Khambatta's position on diabetes is unique due to his personal experience with Type 1 diabetes, his IQ, his interpersonal skills and his desire to learn all he can about this disease. I will be recommending this video to any friend who is experiencing any concerns with diabetes.

I've tried the Mastering Diabetes method and didn't work well for me but on the other hand Plant-Strong works. I noticed that the amount of fat coming from the diet depends on the person so 30gr of fat per day wasn't enough for me as Mastering Diabetes teaches but 15% of the total calories works. So no fiber or complex carbs? How many green, yellow, red and orange vegetables did you eat daily? Find your formula based on how your feeling. Don't trust a you tube video when your body isn't feeling as good as it could. As someone who lived a low carb diet for 10 years with all the animal fats and proteins but still had fatty liver , it took years to be honest and admit I felt run down and wanted a bowl of oats and fruit. I love having my carbs back and they are all complex carbs with lots of fruit and veg. My liver is better, my bloodwork is better and I'm feeling better.

I followed low carb high fat diet for two years and I lost 52 lbs. My blood pressure and all other markers are normal. My blood glucose rise to 140-150 after meals and takes about 3-4 hours to come back to baseline. Few days ago, I watched one video from Dr. Cyrus and in his diet I found that fruits, legumes are not harmful and we can always eat them. I started fruits legumes and vegetables. The results were good but I got confused. In this diet, my blood glucose rises to 200-210 and comes back to 130 in one hour and within 3 hours it’s below 100. I don’t know which one right or wrong. I was diagnosed pre diabetic two years ago. I still don’t know what to do. I currently have no symptoms of pre diabetes. I am fine but understanding blood glucose rise and drop is still my biggest question.

I tried a bunch of different diets and have been healthy but 80/10/10 messed me up the most. New research on women also suggest women need a higher ratio of fat for hormone health, maybe closer to 20% but I agree with keeping fat low in general. All the research I've combed through tells me that high fat diets eventually lead to a variety of issues.

Well, there are many people who have reversed there type 2 diabetes on full fat diet KETO.. others have used a full vegan diet. Others have used fasting. Others have used raw food diet to reverse their diabetes..
I think where the world has reached, it wouldn't be prudent to say your diet is the best over others. Otherwise you will fall in the main stream of doctors who are so hinged to there practices..
Many things work out there and our bodies are the best source of information as they tell us how they feel after trying a diet..
    My view is this.
The body wants consistency with a certain diet. Don't mix different staff, otherwise this will confuse the true picture of what really makes your body sick... Otherwise, good for you that this works for you

So if we have a diabetic dog/cat , we should make them vegan... I dont think so, that get me even more confused. Do these youtube doctors have real studies, or just are conclusions basen on a given diet, I ask this because the keto diet works, AND this vegan diet works, so my conclusion is that since the human is the most adaptable animal in this planet, I think both diets are just a survival mechanism.

Stop feeding them human treats like bread and pulverized carbohydrate animal treats no matter how much they beg.

125g of carbohydrates on a low carb diet??? Sorry to tell ya but that’s not what most low carb doctors recommend. And it’s not a short term result/benefit. Keto/Carnivore diets are the future.
