If you look at the players on that Warriors team (Parrish, Wilkes, and Gus Williams), at least one was in every Finals from 1978 through 1987. It's sad to think about the players the Warriors lost after 1977 AND the players the A's lost around that time (and the Raiders moving to Los Angeles in 1982). It's quite possible that the East Bay could have seen another 5 to 10 championships from 1977 to around 1985.
Rick Barry is in the latter stage of his career in this video but you can see how good he still is. Barry was excellent catch and shoot player, he had a great pull up jumper, and from the triple threat position he could shoot, drive, or pass as well as any player ever. Watching Barry was like watching a clinic. Interestingly and because of updates in sports medicine, Rick Barry finally had his knee cleaned up at the end of his career and he was moving better than ever and Boston was interested in signing him. But for some reason the Celtics decided against it so we never saw Rick Barry on the court with Larry Bird, imagine that.
Agreed and well said. IMO Rick Barry is the greatest White American basketball player of all time. Pistol Pete was amazing, but his college and pro teams didn't win. Larry Byrd was of course outstanding in both college and pros an his teams most definitely did win. But Rick Barry was more athletic than Byrd or Jerry West. Plus Rick Barry and Pistol Pete played before the 3 point shot so their stats would have been so much better. Rick Barry obviously had a lip and was outspoken and that's why he hasn't been allowed to coach - which is a shame. He should teach tall players how to do that underhand free throw. If you want proof, check out the 1975 all star game, he really beat it up and down the floor a couple of times on a couple of fast breaks you can see how he beat the field pretty easily. He and Nate Archibald were playing great together and they would have been a terror if they had a chance to do it during regular season if they were teammates. And Tiny was one of the fastest men of the game.

By the end of his career surgical techniques had improved and he had his knee cleaned out and he said his knee felt much improved. There was even talk of him playing with the Celtics and Bird but that didn't happen. In any case, Barry was a terror on the fast break in the mid 70s either as a finisher or passer.
Watching Kareem put the ball on the floor is pretty awesome…if only he didn’t have to play with 70s travel rules could def see him have a face up game in the modern era.
The way Kareem was dominating as one person, sure made it a tough call for Golden state to win it, but they did, handily, it appeared here. Barry could fill it up from the field, and they sure better not foul him. I wish that I could have seen him play back then, but it was difficult, in my region, to catch any team playing, but the Lakers, from the west, and not a great deal of them.
Kareem was that entire Lakers team. They really had no other first class players. Cazzie had once been an All-Star, and that's it. By himself, Kareem carried that team to the best record in the league. They ran into the Blazers and got swept, which surprised everyone except for those had seen both teams during the regular season.

There are many basketball historians who would put Maravich ahead of Barry as overall career performance. That’s unfortunate and shows how misinformed people are. Barry was everything Maravich was but much more fundamentally sound and twice the defender. So why is that? They were before my time but I think Barry was more frank and blunt in interviews. This causes reporters and producers, big shots in sports to desire knocking Barry down a notch. Then many people who are weak are influenced by opinions of pundits and so on. Oh the underhanded free throws had me laughing so hard but hell they went in so a basket is a made basket no matter how you throw it!

I'm not sure who puts Maravich above Barry. As someone who was around in those days, the consensus from players and coaches would have been that Barry was the better all-around player. Maravich has gained some new respect in the 21st century because of his showmanship but I think nearly every basketball historian would tell you Barry is the better player. They played two different positions and Maravich was a pure scorer but Barry made his teammates better and he carried that 75 championship Warriors team. No disrespect to Maravich, I loved that guy and still miss him.
