Stan, the main character, had been taking his wife Francine to a hypnotist (hypnosis) for 20 years under the pretense that he would buy the hypnotist a sandwich. In exchange, he would make Francine forget stuff that Stan had done and other memories. However, because Stan never bought the hypnotist a sandwich, he broke his agreement with Stan, making Francine remember everything. (Hopefully that clears it up a little 🙂)
I get that to not permanently ruin your game by making an NPC hate you forever they added a way to let you interact with them again, but there’s just something so messed up about getting your spouse to hate you, divorcing them, and then when they resent you wipe their memories so you can continue playing with their minds.
If the shrines only delete the memories of the ex-partner and nobody else, I imagine some realistic future conversations of the ex with others would be pretty awkward 💀 "Hey, Abigail! remember when you were married to the farmer?" "When I was WHAT?"

You forgot to mention if got interact with them after you erase the memories, they will have special dialogue. It will be similar to the first dialogue when you first meet them, but they will add something like, "Wait don't I know you, no that can't be correct."
I love this mechanic, including the silence after divorce, but it's so bad that Krobus is sad and silent after you evict him. Like, we're still friends??? Why are you so upset???

@@Rainb0imo the chores the spouses do don't really contribute to much. by the time you're in a position to marry, you're fairly well-off and can afford to automate most of your farm. your crops are watered by sprinklers, and the 1-2 fences a spouse might fix can be easily done by you as well. in short, the benefits of marriage aren't all that much so it doesn't make a lot of difference whether you marry an npc or have krobus move in.
Fun fact, you can also throw a bouquet into a furnace to get a shriveled bouquet and give it to your spouse to cause a divorce without paying for the divorce Edit: I now know that this is only available early in a marriage. YES PLAY IT, IT SO FUN. Don't think too much about your first farm, just have fun learning about things, otherwise if you want to have "the perfect first farm" your first go, definitely look up "first time stardew guides" and you'll get some insight on how to maximize everything exactly how you want, because it is a long game. But truly everything depends on how you even want to play it.

Someone is under the illusion that they’re happily married, strange things begin to pop up hinting about their past marriages to each other, the spouse questioning their sanity until they grow distant and a divorce is filed. But then they manage to convince themselves that they messed up somewhere and that if they just try one more time the marriage will work out and then performing a ritual or spell to wipe their memory. Like that’s straight up terrifying.
Honestly the ex spouse discovering their old marriage when they have no memories of them finding out that their other ex spouse erased their memories so they can talk normally sounds like a good plot ngl

And then, one day, you wake up with absolutely no memories of your previous heartbreak. No memories of the courtship nor the life you had with this person. And then, they begin to rebuild that relationship with you again. And again. And again. Winning and crushing your heart over and over, each time harder to endure than the last - because despite your lack of memory of the previous lives you build with them, your friends remember. Your family remembers. _Your ex remembers._ Or maybe nobody remembers. Maybe one day the whispers stop, the town goes back to normal about you and your failed marriage, and they watch and cheer you on as the farmer marries you again, and again, and again. Maybe someone eventually realizes that something is terribly wrong here, but can’t do a thing to stop it. Because the farmer can’t let you go, and you’re helpless to stop the cycle.

I'm not sure if you know this but relationship decay is a thing in Stardew, and not only that but it never stops unless you are at max level with normal villagers, or 8 hearts or 10 hearts with dateable characters. So when you marry someone the decay never stops, and you have to maintain the relationship which is surprisingly realistic and cool, at least to me. The ampunt of decay is -20 a day so giving a spouse a loved gift (gives either 60 or 80 I can't remember) about every three days will keep the relationship up! Whoever my character ends up with I usually find a gift I can farm in some way and keep a stock lol (currently Harvey, I'm pickling so much wheat dear gods)

I get there is a mechanic that allows you to reset their memories so it doesn't completely ruin your game for you but that just seems so evil to do that I don't know if I would do that since that seems immersion breaking to just reset everything back to 0

And probably this person would not like to date you anymore, but I would like it if after some time they started to accept your gifts again, and slowly over times you can at least become friends again

The ampunt of decay is -20 a day so giving a spouse a loved gift (gives either 60 or 80 I can't remember) about every three days will keep the relationship up! Whoever my character ends up with I usually find a gift I can farm in some way and keep a stock lol (currently Harvey, I'm pickling so much wheat dear gods)

@@gangalicious3000 Yup, I can get behind having to start from zero hearts. You hurt this person's, so you are no longer friends, this type of wounds take time and effort to heal. And probably this person would not like to date you anymore, but I would like it if after some time they started to accept your gifts again, and slowly over times you can at least become friends again
