I must have every cd she ever did. I'm hoping to get her book " Remembering" soon. She seems to have had a very difficult upbringing and had many traumas because of it. She was so young and full of life. She had no way of knowing what was coming. Life wore her down. She never lost her sense of humor tho and her deep insights. Rest in Power, Sinéad. My goodness you will be so very missed.

Bright ,frank, young, articulate, honest. Love and abundance of talent and principal. So very tragic for her to lose then lose again after having the world eating from the palm of her hand. The empowerment of women is vital and i hope her legacy has some impact on that in the future. sorry but it wasn't specifically about the empowerment of women, feminism or the matriarchy. any attempt to portray it as such is an attempt to hijack and misdirect her legacy. by buying into those paradigms, people are succumbing to the deliberate divide & conquer strategies of the controllers who created the false construct of men vs women in order to destroy the family unit - only to be replaced by the new god, allegiance to the state, so called science and atheism. this is human engineering. patriarchy or matriarchy, there is not one without the other. balance is the key. sinead was fighting for all of humanity, men and women alike.

It's nice to see such interesting historical media coming out about Sinéad - interviews, concert footage, etc. I always admired Sinéad from afar, the courage of her convictions, etc. I was very saddened by her death, and by the realization that I had unintentionally stopped paying attention to her life and career over the last couple of decades. I am now pleasantly discovering some of her later music (traditional Irish songs in particular), and am enthralled by her intelligence and originality of thought and wit, displayed in so many interviews, such as this one. I look forward to reading her autobiography soon. As a man, I can't fully appreciate all she did for women's issues (in Ireland and beyond), but deeply respect her and feel her presence in this world is and will be missed in many ways. RIP Sinéad.
I share your sentiment about Sinéad. (As a woman, I thank you for your empathy and advocacy towards women.) She narrated the audiobook of her Autobiography (Rememberings) herself. IMO, listening to her read it is a million times better than just reading it yourself, because her voice adds so much life and nuance to it. It's moving and tragic, yet really funny in parts, even so. She was so poetic, earnest, humble and philosophical. She had synesthesia and a 6th sense. The section called "The Piano" is eerie and so cool. She really knew how to tell a story! A heartwarming, heartbreaking, funny, melencholy, abused, musical, mystical, eerie, prophetic, justice-seeking, rebel, ghost, war story. (SO Irish!) She was amazingly beautiful altogether. May she finally RIP 💔

Her baby son died at the same time and the story of her death played a huge part in a seminal national debate on women giving birth outside marriage.

Sinead was amazingly self aware ! Yet her view on abortion I cannot support as I believe in the rights of the unborn child. She has an excessively negative view probably because .of her own childhood trauma.
Sinead had 4 children out of wedlock, probably a couple of them were accidental pregnancies. She didn’t choose abortion for herself, but she did support a woman’s right to choose. As a mother herself, Sinead understood that childbirth is inherently dangerous for women, physically, emotionally, psychologically, socially, financially, etc. She believed, like MOST people, that women should have the right to choose their own destiny, and that men, religions, or governments have no right to force them to face death to have a child they don’t want.
I love this mighty spirit she possesses. So willing to to pull the curtain. Such bravery Most people will never live by what is right. Maybe that is why she was given that beautiful gamine face. To soften the blow of the harsh reality she need to uncover and show the world - a brilliant beautiful force - lets NOT forget her She is like Joan Of Arc
A fantastic interview. Sinead was way ahead of her time. Im a few years older than her, but I am my peers held similar views to hers, so I understand when she talks about some sections of society trying to impose their unrealistic views upon young women.
I had high hopes of Sinead as a future President. Her spiritual search may have become a source of ridicule among many at various points but it spoke to a need to search and embrace. She had clear distinctions between the temporal and the divine. And she made great music. RiP Daughter of Ireland, you are missed.
she should have been given the support and therapy that she needed back then in her 20's before life became too challenging for her. She was so strong and beautifully composed in her 20's. It was a different era. You can see from her later years the toll of non conforming to the music industries pressures and the reaccuring PTSD symptoms had on her . All she needed was respect and proper care and therapy. She was just abandoned and expected to perform. Word of advise out there, do not leave it till your 30s, 40s or 50s to work through and heal childhood trauma. Start early in life and build up a wholesome foundation to go forward in life.
I'm a woman off 44 and live in Ireland, I have been refused counselling via GP referral as my case isn't serious against others (likely because Im PSTD And not secually abused) there are crisis levels of Services currently. Unless you are prepared to pay for your own whichbI have and flew out of this Island to have care on Mainland England. Unfortunately Ireland is still eons behind and recent experience of my GP's is that as an articulate, self sufficient, FT working family, mother of 1, they won't listen. You are literally fighting for things like an estrogen test or thyroid thyroxine level test, fighting is an understatement. Unfortunately Sinead didn't stand much of a chance.
Age has nothing to do with treating your abuse of the past. You have to be psychologically ready first and foremost. Some counsellors I have encountered I have had to protect them as they were unable or had never encountered the depths of abuse in our sessions. No good. Ireland is not ready even in 2023.

@@jehouse61we were not like this in the 80s. No one talked about abuse at all back then. A lot of what she's talking about was never talked about. Abortion, sex etc was not even spoken about back then. She was ahead of her time

She was quite clear on many levels at a young age, despite all the abuse she went through. That doesn't often happen. The only things she didn't really see ahead of those involvements, were her own worth, her happiness, that her strength is only created in self love, not found in another (thanks only due to her abuse). She was PLENTY good enough. It's a crying shame that she left so soon. May she rest in peace. 🙏💫💖🌱🌎

Sinead bravely stood for truth and we can best honor her by standing up for her with the truth... The truth is that Sinead O'Connor's obvious suffering was not caused by "mental illness." It was caused by the people who intentionally hurt her and neglected her, not only in her childhood but also throughout her adult life, and it was caused by a severe lack of support in the process of healing from those painful experiences and regaining confidence in her own sanity... The truth is that Sinead was crushed by "mental health" institutions that repeatedly labeled her and prescribed harmful pharmaceuticals, instead of helping her to heal... and by a music industry that tried to force her into what they wanted her to be for them, instead of letting her be her authentic self... and by the media that unfairly judged and degraded her and manipulated people against her... and by the masses of "fans" who swung against her instead of being kind and considerate... and by the many people who neglected her or could not love her the way she needed to be loved and should have been loved...etc. She often pretended that the lashings and cruel judgments were not hurting her, because they cut her too deep. She was more than just her songs or the rebel or that tough wall she was forced to erect around her sensitive heart. She was a human being with human needs. No matter how Sinead actually physically died; the truth is that her life was slowly snuffed out by the heartlessness that exists in humanity's dark closets. Her son's death was just the last blow in a very long chain of painful blows. The truth is that Sinead was too blatantly real and honest and wise and caring for the shallow and evil parts of humanity. And those parts that convinced her that she was crazy and wrong and not OK the way she was deeply hurt her in ways that are immeasurable. Humanity must face its own faults and wrong doings, in order to do better in the future. And Sinead's real life story is one of its many opportunities to do this.
She was so intelligent, and that’s what scared the authoritarians. She told the truth and they wanted her to shut up. I’m so grateful she didn’t. She spoke the truth, even when people did not want to hear it. But it’s so sad that she only got the love and respect after she died, and not while she lived and deserved it. RIP Sinead 🌹

How can someone seem so authentic and present and honest and yet simultaneously plagued by such toxic shame from her child abuse? My understanding of toxic shame is that it involves a pervasive dishonestly with the self and others and, so, i find it reconcile these two things.

Sinead is totally right a child doesn't deserve to be traumatized or unloved unfortunately I have been through traumatic events in my childhood I'm now an adult and am still effected by what happened
I see her as a legend, a strong, riseliant and role model of a human strength she went through everything she was tested in each and every way and she never give up loving God she lived faithfull and went to eternal life with pride and dignity. Very interesting interview. It kind of explains why she might have struggled so much with the fact that some of her children, especially Shane, were initially unwanted/unloved by their fathers (in Shane’s case, it might have been due to the fact that the father was married to someone else and that his wife had recently had a child as well). Based on her responses here, it does make sense. I also agree with her statement that some folks struggle with healthy intimacy because of either abuse or upbringing. I experienced that exact situation.

I am now pleasantly discovering some of her later music (traditional Irish songs in particular), and am enthralled by her intelligence and originality of thought and wit, displayed in so many interviews, such as this one. I look forward to reading her autobiography soon. As a man, I can't fully appreciate all she did for women's issues (in Ireland and beyond), but deeply respect her and feel her presence in this world is and will be missed in many ways. RIP Sinéad.

She narrated the audiobook of her Autobiography (Rememberings) herself. IMO, listening to her read it is a million times better than just reading it yourself, because her voice adds so much life and nuance to it. It's moving and tragic, yet really funny in parts, even so.
She was so poetic, earnest, humble and philosophical. She had synesthesia and a 6th sense. The section called "The Piano" is eerie and so cool. She really knew how to tell a story! A heartwarming, heartbreaking, funny, melencholy, abused, musical, mystical, eerie, prophetic, justice-seeking, rebel, ghost, war story. (SO Irish!)
She was amazingly beautiful altogether. May she finally RIP 💔

When she spoke about a pregnant girl - Ann Rose Lovett was a 15-year-old schoolgirl from County Longford, Ireland who died giving birth beside a grotto in 1984. Her baby son died at the same time and the story of her death played a huge part in a seminal national debate on women giving birth outside marriage.
I often go to that grotto in Granard where Anne Lovett died.
So many girls gave birth and killed their babies in the early years of the 20th C. such was the shame imposed upon them in "Holy Catholic Ireland."@@Londubh1

Sinead was amazingly self aware ! Yet her view on abortion I cannot support as I believe in the rights of the unborn child. She has an excessively negative view probably because .of her own childhood trauma.

Sinead had 4 children out of wedlock, probably a couple of them were accidental pregnancies. She didn’t choose abortion for herself, but she did support a woman’s right to choose. As a mother herself, Sinead understood that childbirth is inherently dangerous for women, physically, emotionally, psychologically, socially, financially, etc. She believed, like MOST people, that women should have the right to choose their own destiny, and that men, religions, or governments have no right to force them to face death to have a child they don’t want.

A fantastic interview. Sinead was way ahead of her time. Im a few years older than her, but I am my peers held similar views to hers, so I understand when she talks about some sections of society trying to impose their unrealistic views upon young women.
I had high hopes of Sinead as a future President. Her spiritual search may have become a source of ridicule among many at various points but it spoke to a need to search and embrace. She had clear distinctions between the temporal and the divine.
And she made great music.

Yes! She was an ocean of wisdom
she should have been given the support and therapy that she needed back then in her 20's before life became too challenging for her. She was so strong and beautifully composed in her 20's. It was a different era. You can see from her later years the toll of non conforming to the music industries pressures and the reaccuring PTSD symptoms had on her . All she needed was respect and proper care and therapy. She was just abandoned and expected to perform. Word of advise out there, do not leave it till your 30s, 40s or 50s to work through and heal childhood trauma. Start early in life and build up a wholesome foundation to go forward in life.
I'm a woman off 44 and live in Ireland, I have been refused counselling via GP referral as my case isn't serious against others (likely because Im PSTD And not secually abused) there are crisis levels of Services currently. Unless you are prepared to pay for your own whichbI have and flew out of this Island to have care on Mainland England. Unfortunately Ireland is still eons behind and recent experience of my GP's is that as an articulate, self sufficient, FT working family, mother of 1, they won't listen. You are literally fighting for things like an estrogen test or thyroid thyroxine level test, fighting is an understatement. Unfortunately Sinead didn't stand much of a chance.
Age has nothing to do with treating your abuse of the past. You have to be psychologically ready first and foremost. Some counsellors I have encountered I have had to protect them as they were unable or had never encountered the depths of abuse in our sessions. No good. Ireland is not ready even in 2023.

She was quite clear on many levels at a young age, despite all the abuse she went through. That doesn't often happen. The only things she didn't really see ahead of those involvements, were her own worth, her happiness, that her strength is only created in self love, not found in another (thanks only due to her abuse). She was PLENTY good enough. It's a crying shame that she left so soon. May she rest in peace. 🙏💫💖🌱🌎

Sinead bravely stood for truth and we can best honor her by standing up for her with the truth... The truth is that Sinead O'Connor's obvious suffering was not caused by "mental illness." It was caused by the people who intentionally hurt her and neglected her, not only in her childhood but also throughout her adult life, and it was caused by a severe lack of support in the process of healing from those painful experiences and regaining confidence in her own sanity...
The truth is that Sinead was crushed by "mental health" institutions that repeatedly labeled her and prescribed harmful pharmaceuticals, instead of helping her to heal... and by a music industry that tried to force her into what they wanted her to be for them, instead of letting her be her authentic self... and by the media that unfairly judged and degraded her and manipulated people against her... and by the masses of "fans" who swung against her instead of being kind and considerate... and by the many people who neglected her or could not love her the way she needed to be loved and should have been loved...etc.
She often pretended that the lashings and cruel judgments were not hurting her, because they cut her too deep. She was more than just her songs or the rebel or that tough wall she was forced to erect around her sensitive heart. She was a human being with human needs.
No matter how Sinead actually physically died; the truth is that her life was slowly snuffed out by the heartlessness that exists in humanity's dark closets. Her son's death was just the last blow in a very long chain of painful blows.
The truth is that Sinead was too blatantly real and honest and wise and caring for the shallow and evil parts of humanity. And those parts that convinced her that she was crazy and wrong and not OK the way she was deeply hurt her in ways that are immeasurable.
Humanity must face its own faults and wrong doings, in order to do better in the future. And Sinead's real life story is one of its many opportunities to do this.

She was so intelligent, and that’s what scared the authoritarians. She told the truth and they wanted her to shut up. I’m so grateful she didn’t. She spoke the truth, even when people did not want to hear it. But it’s so sad that she only got the love and respect after she died, and not while she lived and deserved it.

How can someone seem so authentic and present and honest and yet simultaneously plagued by such toxic shame from her child abuse? My understanding of toxic shame is that it involves a pervasive dishonestly with the self and others and, so, i find it reconcile these two things.
I love your observation. I think this requires a lot of soul searching + knowing one self fully to be able to live your truth and be authentic after trauma and abuse

Very interesting interview.
It kind of explains why she might have struggled so much with the fact that some of her children, especially Shane, were initially unwanted/unloved by their fathers (in Shane’s case, it might have been due to the fact that the father was married to someone else and that his wife had recently had a child as well). Based on her responses here, it does make sense.
I also agree with her statement that some folks struggle with healthy intimacy because of either abuse or upbringing. I experienced that exact situation.
