    This is the type of content I’d expect to pay for, but here it is just free for the watching. Very thankful for this video! Your sculptures are absolutely phenomenal! You’re so talented. The hair on that one example piece was just *chefs kiss*. I recently bought some apoxie because I’ve always wanted to sculpt stuff, so I’m learning all I can before I go in.

      What is the brand name for the safety solvent.. LOL I’m 69 years old and excited to learn this today.. Can’t wait to learn how to do this.. I boondock out in the desert for 6 months and have just gotten back to working with clay. It’s been 30 years since I have worked in any sort of clay. Was looking for something that was air dry but strong. You’re an amazing artist..I think your work is breathtaking...... Melody..

    Only recently began experimenting with this type of clay after becoming frustrated with polymer clay. Love the way I can build up bits at a time and be able to easily get a flawless blend after sanding. Still getting used to the drying and working times.

    Ah, thank you for your informative videos! I've dabbled a bit with Epoxy over the years sculpting, but never sculpted outright with it. Now, I may be a rookie with Epoxy, but I'm fairly versed with sanding and carving so I think I have a few good tips for you or anyone who's curious.
    1. Instead of using a flimsy exacto knife try some wood carving tools. They come in a variety of shapes and they're incredibly sturdy. They're really not that spendy either. Make sure to have heavy leather gloves or the like.
    2. A dremel with variable speeds and ball end tools is indescribably wonderful to work with! And you can really up your game with a flex shaft attachment. It's small and light and you can use it like a pen. (no I didn't make that name up either!)
    3. There's micro sanding sticks that can reach into small annoying areas. Or you can just wrap some sand paper around a popsicle stick. Oh, and metal files could be helpful too.
    Maybe you've already got this info, but thanks for reading..
    Good luck on your journey as an artist. :)

    I loved this video. Very informative. I loved the concept models too. Ace. One question, what is the main difference between the smooth on Air and the apoxie clay? Strength?

    • @JoshForeman
      @JoshForeman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Freeform Air: Less expensive, Much lighter, more fragile, Much harder to sculpt details, but just fine for carving details after set.
      Apoxie Clay: More expensive, Heavy, Very strong, great for sculpting details, takes a little longer to carve due to it's density.

  • @marykayryan7891

    Question: when you are using an exacto knife on the apoxie scultp or free form air, is that piece already cured or are you carving into it while it is still curing but in a stiffer phase? Thanks.

    You have a fantastic talent! Thank you. How long though before Apoxie sculpt dries? Do you only take little bits out of the tub?If it hardens does the safe solution soften it again? Again thank you for creating. Ive been looking for a way to sculpt figures around twisted wood, and this looks like the perfect answer as it has to harden in place and obviously cant be kiln dried or baked.

    • @JoshForeman
      @JoshForeman  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The clay sets permanently after about 3 hours. It can not be re-softened. But can be carved, sanded, drilled, etc. And yeah, this is the perfect medium for what you're trying to do!

  • @natii1232
    @natii1232 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’ve never used this medium before so I’m sorry if this is a dumb question, but when you move on to another piece of the project (i.e the horns), do you wait for the previous part to completely cure (i.e the skull)? Amazing work by the way loved the informative video!

    • @JoshForeman
      @JoshForeman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I usually wait for parts to cure before assembly. What I've found is that I design things in more pieces, and so I'm rarely waiting, because my time is filled jumping from part to part.

    awesome video! Thank you! What wire did you use for the horns? Also, at what working time did you start carving the clay? I can see it's not soft, but not fully cured either. Do all your sculptures have a mold because I see people just molding over aluminum foil wrapped in painter's tape? I'm new to doing this, but want to learn the correct way. Thank you! :)

    • @JoshForeman
      @JoshForeman  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can see how I constructed the horns around the 21 min mark. I start SCULPTING right away. I have to wait about 2-3 hours before CARVING. (These are two different processes) I'm not sure what you mean about the mold. You might mean armature, which is any structure that you build under the material you sculpt with. If that's what you mean, then yes, anything more than an inch thick needs some kind of armature for weight and cost reasons.

    Why is the safety solvent better than water? Plus it's so hard to get in the UK.

    • @JoshForeman
      @JoshForeman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It keeps the tool lubricated longer and better. Though the difference is not massive. If it's stupidly expensive over there I'd just stick with water.

  • @wolflahti412
    @wolflahti412 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why do you feel you can't add layers and sand and carve polymer clay? (8:50) Bake, modify, rebake is my core process, such as it is.

    • @JoshForeman
      @JoshForeman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't get a solid and predictable 'stick' with fresh poly over baked, especially with thin layers. That, and the relative weakness of polymer just makes Apoxie sculpting more comfortable for me. That said, I am curious to try going back to polymer with these techniques to see what happens.

  • @itselifuentes
    @itselifuentes 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Does the epoxy stick to the aluminum or it just releases easily? Also what can you recommend to use as a "core" if I want to make it hollow?

    • @JoshForeman
      @JoshForeman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It will stick to anything except silicon. If you want a hollow void you should make a plug out of foil or something else you can crumple and remove, but cover it with petroleum jelly before you sculpt your epoxie clay around it.

  • @SteelPhoenyx
    @SteelPhoenyx 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Questions… on the war skull, was that all the Free Form Air, or were you using Apoxie Sculpt on the details? Was a lot of the carving done after it had cured?
    I’m very new to playing with sculpture and the little I have played with the epoxy type clays has been a fascinating journey. I was using Magic Sculpt but giving the Aves products a try. Really digging your videos!

    • @JoshForeman
      @JoshForeman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I pressed Free Form Air into the mold to get the underlying skull, then used Apoxie Sculpt for all the details. Magic Sculpt if more or less the same as Apoxie Sculpt, so you shouldn't have any translation issues. Thanks for watching! :)

    On a serious note, how bad are the fumes from the freeform air sculpt? And which has a smoother surface? Apoxie or freeform? Thanks, I await your reply before I order😅

    • @JoshForeman
      @JoshForeman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are no fumes from apoxy clays or freeform air. Slight odors if you stick it up your nose, but I don't recommend using it for life casting your nostrils. Both products will give you as smooth a surface as you want. I will say, the free form air is more porous. That's what makes it so light weight. So technically you'd need more primer and sanding to get it glass smooth. Free Form Air is also not good for detail work. I use it as a filler. If you're starting out I recommend Aves Apoxie Sculpt or Aves Apoxie Clay. They are very very similar.

      @@zippygogo3660 Well like I said in the video, it requires a different mindset and workflow. It's a lot more about blocking out the forms, then carving/sanding after that part is set. Then layering on the next, rinse/repeat. You can wait for it to stiffen for an hour before using it, but that gives you a really small window of working time. I think it's more about accepting that you aren't sculpting all the details in one go like you do with polymer.

      Yep. People use this stuff for toy mods all the time. I converted an action figure to a Link figure for my son's birthday a while ago.

    I have a question. I’m 99% sure that the answer is “no” but would any of these be sturdy enough to make a spanking paddle out of?

      Assuming we are talking about consensual adult purposes, I would say this could be used to decorate an existing paddle just fine.

    Sorry, the music is too much, distraction is the killer - you want attention, not people walking.

      Thanks for the feedback. I've been trying to figure out why this particular video is getting this kind of feedback. Is there a specific part where you can't hear what I'm saying? (Or it's just difficult to hear) Or is it that you don't like the style of the music?
