  • In this video I show how an anchor can easily get too stuck to retreive easily. After that Arn and I do a side-scan sonar search to find the likely location of a lost anchor and then Paul and I go for a SCUBA dive to try to find it.

    I believe this should become established in maritime law. When boating near Dangar Island, if you pass Renko and she is moored and unattended, you must, without boarding, leave a full six pack onboard.

    Other than the dilemma of finding the anchor, my first impression (and from other videos) is how great that Detroit sounds!

    This episode is the perfect climax to the quixotic decision to restore Renko, and very satisfying it is to watch her in service. I thought the whole introduction to diving and salvage issues was great, treasure or not, and have every faith your underwater videography.

    Love the model! Very cool.
    It's funny you were worried about leaving a buoy when the anchor initially got snagged. Here in New England there would already be 485,000 lobster trap buoys everywhere - in the channel, out of the channel, near shore, far from shore, no matter! It's like driving your boat through a mine field.

    Hi Stu. That was cool to watch. And relevant too. Yes, I have a mystery on my river - just like you. Its best described as 'The mystery of the Yamaha 90 and, 2 x 10 meter control cables, and electrical harness extension. Yes, all that kit that fell off my transom at WOT. My first inkling that something was going down was the feeling of whipping cables running past mt legs and feet. As far as I can work out, someone had removed the fasteners in order to burgle my Outboard.
    .BTW, Don't worry mate, have got my respect. Watching your mission has given me a laugh and the heart to keep up my search albeit in the Tamaki River Haystack
    In terms of progress so far, Ive only got as far as 3-4 hours of random passes, whilst recording my side scan data of the rivers silty bottom. ' I know she's down there and Im just glad I'm not down there with the outboard. Dodging a bullet is always a happy ending.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This adventure was fun, at least for watching. I feel your pain on the getting older nonsense! Mine is with all the layers of winter gear. The idea with the guide rope weighted at both ends might work, maybe have another rope connected with a ring so it can slide along the fixed rope. That would allow you to explore up and down the terrain, and hopefully not get terribly tangled. Or, maybe attach a metal detector to the ROV? It could become some kind of mad science/engineering experiment.

    One thing I have discovered when searching for things is that you will always find it in the last place you look !
    Underwater searching hardly ever goes to plan though and you always have to revise your methods to suit the location, it's almost impossible to follow any kind of pattern at times so you will need to be extremely lucky to spot what you are searching for. You will always find more fishing gear than what you set out to find too !

    Stu, one thing id recommend, especially since your doing more work related things, and less sight seeing with your dives, is moving from a "yoke" style 1st stage, to a "DIN" style. the thread in connection on the DIN is much stronger, and less likely to get knocked loose if you bump the top of the tank, or get entangled in something. most manufactures make kits to convert the regulator from one style to another, so you wouldn't need a new reg, just a few parts. Ive also found they tend to have less issues with making a good seal, unlike the yoke style.

    • @johncolwell2188
      @johncolwell2188 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. And the O-ring is in the reg not the tank so it's harder to lose.

  • @InArcadiaSum

    I guess one approach, when first cutting away the anchor chain, is to attach a small buff on a short rope to it, so that it's well below the surface but floats high enough off the bottom for the diver to find it; if there's a worry it'll be carried away by a passing boat. Anyway, good hunting for your anchor.

    Interesting project....a couple of points; (hope you dont mind the input)
    ROV's are great but if vis is low it may prove pointless and with the topography and tidal current may also prove quite difficult/hazardous to navigate especially with the tether....your anchor recovery could easily turn into an ROV recovery project.
    There are a couple of other basic options to underwater search survey the area.....comes down to planning.....determine estimated dive time/bottom time and then estimate/predict search area which can be covered in time available/budgeted. Then choose methodology.
    1 - Concentric circles tried - determined not suitable
    2 - Compass /bearing line search from central point - connect tether to central point choose a bearing (usually start at 0 degrees mag) and extend search swimming that bearing predetermined distance, return on reverse bearing .... collecting tether along the way. Then rotate to next bearing 2-5 degrees magnetic (this depends on search conditions and visibility) and repeat (work area like bicycle spokes). This allows you to search/cover ground through difficult terrain in a systematic method.
    3 - Establish baseline transect, a line (marked at intervals like every two meters) from central point (float anchor point) to a predetermined point (usually 0 degrees mag) at a predetermined distance (peg it to the bottom) and run straight search transects parralell from that base line (at 90/270 degrees magnetic).
    There are many other ways, too many to note, but fundementally it is about making an educated guess where to start (using all information you can gather....grid survey the broad search area with you sounder could provide a reference), knowing where you have searched so you don't waste time, having a simple easy to execute plan....cause thinking is hard, and using a repeatable method that is effecient and safe.
    Don't forget to carry a tag line to possitively mark where the anchor or chain is if you find it (can use the tether but sometime you find more than you bargin on).

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I thought this was a really cool video on the channel. I came for the boating stuff originally, and that's got me really interested in to the mechanical aspects of boats now. But I LOVE diving and I feel like I can never find dive-related videos that are right for me. I know how to dive and love seeing the different details of stuff, and I feel like there aren't any vlog-style-ish channels that cover content how I like. I definitely look forward to more videos on this! There's also two other things I've wanted to say, but haven't commented yet. First, in the last month of and a half of summer (in the northern hemisphere...) watching pretty much all your videos on Renko, and it's been really cool to see you getting the boat, redoing everything, and now finally getting to use it regularly. Second, I was wondering if you've thought about putting some mapping-software on the touch-screen computer that you could use to map your sonar scans. Some sort of GIS software would work, maybe reefmaster-pro does that, or if you don't mind getting a little more technical you can use QGIS probably (it's free). I worked in a lab that was mapping the harbor by my university, and one of the things the graduate student did was overlay all these sidescan transects of miles of shoreline using ArcGIS. Not that you'd need to do that, but I thought something along those lines might be useful for search projects like these, or just interesting for many reasons in general.

      Thanks mate. I’d love to get some mapping software working on the computer so we could slowly build up a very detailed survey of the river bed around the island. I would be very interested in doing that.

    Before you cut the chain, get a GPS fix from your chartplotter. Makes it really easy to find the anchor or rock back.

    @Dangarmarine hey Stu a suggestion you could make a clamp to attach a flashlight to the metal detector so you have a free hand. Instead of using two like you were. Would be a handy little gadget. Love the dive video. More please!

    Thinking it may be a good idea to put some handles out the edge of that entrance to the boat

    Always clearer at the top of the tide.

      Yeah, unfortunately that day the high tide wasn’t until close to dark.

    A hook made up out of 1/4 or 3/8 steel is good for reaching through the silt I had one with a T handle in timber so when you do the search you bury and drag the hook back as you proceed. Tough as you say when there's those rocks!!

    I left an anchor in a lake and another in the ocean after they got stuck. I had to leave quickly as the winds were picking up and the swells were getting big. I carried a "Crocodile Dundee" type knife at the steering wheel for quick cuts of the anchor rope.

    I did quite a few "lost anchor searches" back in the day (visual, no metal detecting gear). My one comment about that is .. a lost anchor is very hard to find. You would think it should be easy to spot with the chain and rode hanging off it, but it never seems to work that way. Unless you drop right on top of it, searches are too often non productive. BTW: my dive certification is 29 years prior to yours (time flies, eh?). The standard tank back then was steel 72 cu ft @ 2250 psi. My "high tech" rig had twin 72's with a custom manifold that had 2 regulator ports so I could have a second reg for emergencies. That rig was very heavy. I don't think I could even pick it up today.

      For sure finding anything underwater is much harder than most people realise. I’m looking forwArd to practicing and get better at it though.

    Fun episode Stu, pretty lifeless down there. I so wanna try magnet fishing for the chain.

    Cool video. It was exciting watching the search dive! Is there such a thing as negative visibility 'cause damn that looked rough! Stu, the downward pointing 2D sonar (3D side scan could be used in overlay mode if the Raymarine offers it like my Lowrance unit does) could resolve a pattern like a stretched out chain (and the chain pile formed when you cut the chain) if it is not buried too deeply into the silt. You can adjust the contrast and gain on the sonar and that will help distinguish higher density materials from lower. Worth considering anyway. Good luck with the search. Cheers!

    You can always lay out a grid of jack stay lines for searching instead of using a circular pattern.

    Good explanation on the use of knifes in diving. Just think about the location of the knife if you become entangled the leg is often the hardest place to reach for your knife.
