    There have been a few questions about tow line length, so I'll add a pinned comment. We start with a shorter line in the harbour due to the high traffic and the calmer waters allowing us to get away with it. Longer lines are required once you get offshore as with both vessels riding on different parts of the swell it is possible for the towing vessel to be going down a wave face while the towed vessel is sliding down the back of a wave. This can cause hugh shock loads on the deck fittings if the line is too short. The catenary and weight of a long line protects against this. This effect can be increased by adding a weight to the centre of the tow rope. Longer lines also have a larger amount of shock-absorbing stretch available to dampen the shock loads. Ideally the tow line is a multiple of the wave length of the swell, but closer to shore this can be quite variable and hard to do.

      i was thinking a floatie midway would help others know there is a tow line there. a consciensous boater would then give more berth unlike the wake shooter that passed you.

    That moment at 10 to 5 in the Sydney harbour, with the first light peeking above the horizon, and a kettle on the stove for a nice cup of coffee, that must have been awesome. Pure satisfaction.

      I can relate to having a cup watching the sun rise in East Matagorda Bay, then slipping into the water to wade up on tailing redfish in the marsh grass.

    It's good to hear that that big old Detroit pulling it's weight for a change, it sounded really good with a decent load. It usually sounds like it could use a higher gear when motoring along because it sounds a bit overpowered for that little boat.
    Something that surprised me was hearing yesterdays date on the weather forecast, it really makes a difference to get a time reference for a video and shows you finished and uploaded it the same day you towed the other boat back, I appreciate that kind of info a lot !

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I agree, I think the boat could use a bit more prop. Some of the footage hangs around for a while, but most vids are uploaded pretty much straight away.

    I realize it's no comparison but I have many memories of towing barges. I used to work in the U.S. Merchant Marine as an Engineer. For about a year-and-a-half of that time I did ocean-going tug/barge combinations, all over the world, some on the tow, some in the "notch" using the Auto-bar system. When on the tow the barge was several hundred feet aft. The line would run under the water for a long ways, it worked like a shock absorber. We never broke a line. The tugs averaged about a 150 ft in length and the barges were usually around 500 feet in length. It was a rough ride on the tow.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      A long line that doesn't leave the water certainly is a great shock absorber. I've had a few questions about why it is so long, I think I'll have to add a pinned comment!

    Back in my Navy years on board our submarine when we used nylon lines we would attach a short section of line to the main rode with a bow in it to measure the amount of stretch in the main rode by how tight the attached line had become due to the main rode stretching. Tight nylon lines can be a dangerous thing due to stored energy while in use.

    Great vid. Gramps taught us 3 splices; back, ring/eye and long/short (nomenclature on coast of Maine, anyway). These were invaluable, not just because of the usefulness of the individual splices but because with each new one we could then teach ourselves several others. I only realized much later the second lesson was more important, beyond boating. I’m teaching my kids now (8,11,14).

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Alan. Unfortunately I'm having issues launching the drone from Renko due to the compass freaking out around all the steel. Not sure what the answer is there.

    • @alant956
      @alant956 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dangar Marine Looked into it a bit Stu....called a friend who has a drone business, (part time), and the skinny is a heavy steel boat is not the place to be launching sensitive drones. He said depending on the drone, you may be able to calibrate the compass away from any interference to have it work better, but thinks its never going to be great from a steel boat. You might try launch and recovery from on top of the cabin...or from the dingy....either way you need a partner! Good luck and thanks for the motivation for projects of my own, really enjoying the adventure! Cheers

    Me and my dad towed a 30m wood boat with our 18m wood boat and then docked it by tying up side by side. These are heavy boats in Croatia so it was very slow, 2-3kts.
